Pizza- so not worth it!

Thursday, June 28, 2012

DH and the kids decided we would go ahead and get on the road today, so we packed up and headed back to Virginia. I had my online class tonight, but we made it to the hotel in plenty of time and dh took the kids to the pool while I was "in class". I hadn't eaten since breakfast (they got McDonald's drive thru while I drove) and I have been craving pizza lately, so I decided to indulge in pizza with them tonight.

We placed our pizza order, then two of the girls and I headed to Wal-Mart for drinks and some other things that we needed. I ordered a thin crust veggie pizza with light cheese and loaded it with veggies! I took the veggies from some of the other slices and put them on mine so I wasn't eating so much of the salty crust and cheese. The pizza was already getting cold when we got back from Wal-mart, and just wasn't satisfying to me.

I ended up eating half of the pizza and warmed up some veggies dh and I had left over from Tuesday to eat after it. I am sitting right now at exactly 1000 calories, and under on protein, fiber and potassium. My sodium level isn't high by most standards, but still above my goal of >1,000 by about 200mg.

NUTRIENTS: GOAL TODAY
Calories: 1,200 - 1,550 1,000
Fat: 27 - 60 32
Carbohydrates: 135 - 252 139
Protein: 60 - 136 40
Fiber, total dietary: 25 - 45 17
Calcium, Ca: 100 - 150 142
Sodium, Na: 500 - 1,500 1,181
Potassium, K: 2,000 - 3,500 1,087
Iron, Fe: 100 - 150 48
Vitamin D: 100 - 150 125
Zinc, Zn: 100 - 200 38

I managed a really quick, short workout in the tiny fitness center here. Jumped on the elliptical, but the heat in the room and the musty smell limited my time.

Tomorrow, we have sandwich fixings for lunch and I have plenty of waters ready to go. We will be going to King's Dominion, walking around all day and riding roller coasters.

Pizza continues to be a nemesis for me! emoticon I have switched to the veggie with thin crust when my family has pizza night. But no matter how determined I am going into that meal I always end up eating too much! emoticon

I have been craving pizza for quite a while and sometimes buy it but I can sure taste the salt in it which I don't need.

I am proud of dh and proud of myself for how we did on vacation! We walked the boardwalk every day of our trip. We ate good food, but were reasonable in most of our choices and cooked many of our meals in the hotel room using the steamer and electric skillet. We stopped on the way home today and shared a picnic lunch instead of stopping at a fast food place. We didn't go to the seafood buffet or to Cheeseburger in Paradise, and we walked past every single one of the ice cream and frozen yogurt shoppes as we walked down the main strip. I think there must have been 10 or more of them! Dh even walked on the treadmill in the fitness center to give me time to work on my project that I turned in yesterday!

Since I got home today, though, I have felt like I was starving! What is it about being home that makes me feel hungry? I really didn't get hungry most of the time we were gone, though we only ate two meals most days. But, as soon as we got back to my in-laws, I had eaten 2 cookies before I even realized what I was doing!

I will weigh-in tomorrow to see how I did as far as weight-loss. I posted my weight on Friday at 148, so I'll use that as my pre-vacation weight. I had already packed the scale this morning.

Dh is discouraged, though. He said he had only lost 3 pounds while we were there. This was from Thursday or Friday until yesterday. While I would have expected him to lose more than that, he was only looking at 5 days time. I tried to reassure him, but he said that this is why he gets discouraged. He feels like he is trying hard and doesn't get the results he should. He felt that, at his size, he should be dropping big numbers with as active as we were this week. On one hand, I agree with him. On the other, I know he ate some things that would contribute to the weight not coming off. I need to remind him of his goal for next year. 3 pounds in a week is nothing to frown about- if he lost 3 pounds a week, in a year he would have lost over 150 pounds, putting him very close to goal weight! Hopefully, I can work on helping him see the progress when he doesn't see the numbers on the scale. I would love for him to be able to ride roller coasters and go horseback riding with me and the kids. Though we were pretty active this week, there are things that I would like for us to be able to do together that he just can't do right now.

Headed to the orthodontist in the morning to get a bracket replaced, dd has her last day of driver's ed and I have my last online class tomorrow night, then leaving out again Friday to take the kids to the mountains and King's Dominion. My short summer is going by quickly!

Great job staying mindful while on vacation! An average weight gain on vacation is 5-7 pounds.

With extreme weight loss TV shows we tend to poo-poo the sensible/healthy 1-2 pound loss per week that the medical professionals recommend. I hope your dh listens to you--you're right on! If not, perhaps a motivational chat/email from the doctor might help? Sometimes our closest loved ones don't always hear what we say. :O)

Amazing vacation!

Sunday, June 24, 2012

DH and I are having a great time!

Instead of the trip to Cheeseburger in Paradise and the seafood buffet yesterday, we actually skipped lunch because he had snacks at the movie and I wasn't hungry. Instead of the buffet dinner I was dreading, we walked 30 blocks to a nice little seafood place. While we waited, they had live music on the boardwalk. I got lots of healthy veggies that they allowed me to order without anything added except a little olive oil, and some mahi-mahi with deviled crab. I actually scraped off most of the crabmeat because it was seasoned and too spicy for my tastes, but ate most of dh's fried crab, which was amazing!

On the walk back, we stopped several times at different musical venues. Who knew Va Beach had an annual event they call "Sandstock"?! We caught a little on Friday night before the rain hit, several groups last night, and made a night of it tonight after cooking dinner in the room. Different bands were featured at different locations, each as a tribute to a singer or group from the '60s, '70s, and '80s.

I am definitely spoiled by resorts with full kitchens! We have been running an extension cord to cook on the balcony using the steamer and electric skillet we brought with us! I definitely come prepared, though!

We have gotten in great walks all week on the boardwalk, walking to the shops, restaurant yesterday, and to hear the music tonight. Plus, we danced this evening as we enjoyed the tribute to the Rolling Stones. Didn't seem like much, but my calves were burning!

This morning's weigh-in: same as yesterday- still down 3 pounds from last week even with vacation and TOM!

My reality check- still have to finish my paper and do some work for my summer class by Thursday (we get home Wednesday, then leave for vacay with the kids on Thursday!)

Awesome! Enjoy VA Beach. I haven't been down there since my cousin's wedding about 6 years ago. I think that's cool that you brought your steamer and skillet to be able to cook healthy meals. Great idea.

Summer 5% Challenge Day 1- vacation!

Saturday, June 23, 2012

Today is the starting day for the Summer 5% challenge. I am a Starfish again, as I have been several challenges. There are many returning friends on the team and some new faces as well. I am excited to be starting the challenge! This week's goal: drinking water and getting in exercise. No problem with the water, as that is all I drink. Exercise... well, I am on vacation! DH and I have been walking most places and spent 35 minutes in the amazing fitness center at the hotel yesterday.

I weighed in at 147 this morning, which is down from last week. But, dh wants to go to Cheeseburger in Paradise and a seafood buffet today! Hopefully, I can keep the damage to a minimum! My smoothies aren't working for me here because we have no freezer. Tried packing the strawberries in ice in the cooler, but they didn't stay frozen. Confirmed that I cannot do a smoothie with ice. First, there were still pieces. Blended it some more and it ended up so full of air I didn't think I could finish it. DH tried it and said it tasted like air. Well, 427 calories of air, but yes! Guess I'll have to figure something else out!

5% challenge Starting Weight 6/23: 147
6/30:
7/7:
7/14:

My 5% goal is to lose 7 lbs
My goal weight is 140 lbs

(Starting weight x 0.05 = 5% goal)
