It's been a long time

Sunday, January 02, 2011

It's been a year since I reached my weight loss goal.
Wow..I can't believe it's been such a long time. The journey has been interesting to say the least. A year ago I was feeling fantastic about how much weight I had lost and about where my life was going. I had and still have the most wonderful support system in the form of my husband, and boy have I needed him in the last year.
I stopped coming to sparkpeople when my father was diagnosed with Cancer. I wanted, and needed to spend time with him, and I did. I traveled 2 hours each way once a week. Then twice a week...then more. Eventually I simply stayed at our cottage which was only 2 min from his house and I would go there every day. During this time, my husband was there listening to me rant and rave and cry and carry on.
My father died in June of last year with a request for me to go visit his family (and obviously my family as well) in the Netherlands. He had things he wanted to related to some of them.
So in July my daughter and I went for two weeks. What a trip that was. I accomplished everything my father wanted. Relationships were healed in his family and through the death of my own father, relationships were healed in my family as well.
My running was pushed aside, but I kept up with my new eating habits and I continued to walk miles.
When I started this weightloss journey I wanted it to be something I could live with for the rest of my life. I wanted changes to be made that would enable me to keep going no matter what.
Well the "no matter what" part came very early.
The stress of losing a parent and being his main caregiver made me lose 15 pounds under my goal. I'm still there.
Now at the beginning of another year, I hope and pray I don't lose anyone else. There were also two other deaths in my family last year, two cousins.
I hope and pray for everyone here on spark that you have a wonderful year ahead of you, and that you reached the goals you set for last year.
Happy new year all :)

Oh dear! So sorry about your loss... It's never easy for those left behind. You did what you had to do for him and that's the most important thing.

However, I'm happy that you are back with us. We missed you. Many, many emoticon emoticon

Man it feels like forever since I've even logged on here.
This month has not been the best. :(
Ohhhh physically I'm doing well, and emotionally I'm ok.
Just really busy. My father who had the heart attack and then was diagnosed with congestive heart failure..along with his other conditions (ie diabetes etc) Was also just diagnosed with Lung cancer. never ends.
Now my father speaks and reads english, but it's not his first language, and technical terms are not always easy for him to understand. My step mother is having flashbacks to her first marriage, and is dealing with that rather poorly. Her first husband died of lung cancer after 27 years of marriage. She then met and married my father. This fall they will be married for 27 years. So to say the least, she is not able to comprehend the differences between her first and second marriage. To her she is comparing everything now with everything then. Completely understandable, but that leaves me with the bulk of the explaining to do and Dr's visits to go to.

so off I go again.

uggg February!

Welcome to the worst month of the year!

Ok, maybe this is just me. I hate Feb. I'm not a fan of winter. I know this is the shortest month of the year, but it just always seems to drag on :(

Enough of that complaining now.
Have been walking and running on my treadmill each day! yippie :) I'm 4 pounds under my goal weight. I'm almost afraid I'm going to keep losing weight because I'm really starting to train now for my "run" later this year. I'm pushing myself to get into shape now for a 10k.
I'm going to run with a couple of my friends, and I just can't let them or me down. So not going to worry about the pounds, and just going to work on getting my muscles and endurance built up so I don't die out When registering for the run they asked if I wanted to finish in under and hour, etc. All I kept thinking was "I want to survive this, who cares how long it takes" lol

Back to the training!

Spark on everyone, spring is just around the corner!

Good for you to keep SPARKING ON with such VIGOR!

Look out 10K, here you come! Woo hoo!

Feb. will pass soon enough...I'm with you...such a long, long month...looking forward to taking some time off soon to visit my son in warmer latitudes down in Georgia!

I like to at least find SOMETHING to enjoy in Feb...and hoping that will be getting back up on cross country skis and developing some surety and steadiness so that I can really enjoy this! :-)

I haven't been around much this week.
So much going on.
Monday night I get a phone call that every daughter does not want to get. My father suffered a heart attack.
Now heart disease runs in my fathers family. Something I've known since I was very little. However if you ask my father, it was all a fluke and seriously...two brothers and a father dying of heart attacks does not mean it runs in the family!

My father does not take care of himself. He drinks (I would call him an alcoholic) smokes, does not eat healthy, does not exercise. He has high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes. Now we can add the congestive heart failure, the heart attack to it all. And when they did the CAT scan this week they found some "spots" on his lungs. This coming week he is being transferred to a larger hospital to do a scope and biopsy to find out what those spots are.
I've been eating well and getting my workouts in...I just haven't had a lot of time to log it all on here.

Then to top it all off..we've had a few legal issues with some of the neighbours. No problems with the neighbours...they are all wonderful, but there are some issues with the subdivision we are have to figure that one out. And today is wedding day for a niece. HUGE event. So will be gone for most of the day and all night.

I want a vacation!!! waaaaaaaaaa

I am sorry to hear about your dad!

I hope you have a terrific time at your niece's wedding.

My husband and I checked in at a moderately-expensive hotel for an overnight stay. It was definitely a huge benefit to both of us to re-connect and do something other than the usual work and kids' routine. Find a bed and breakfast nearby and enjoy an overnight stay. It might help you both and clear your head a little.

Baby it's cold out there!

Saturday, January 09, 2010

I know, I know, it's January. I've never been one that likes the cold or quite frankly anything to do with cold.
Some people can't wait for it to start snowing so they can go skiing or snow boarding or snowmobiling. I'm not one of those people.
I have gotten out there to walk a few times this week..but have not walked out there the distance I did over the spring, summer and fall. Thank goodness I now have the treadmill :)
Just checking in and saying hi.
Off to the treadmill I go, track that and my food.
Staying on track with my eating and maintaining is my goal now :)

I'm enjoying the snow, but then I'm loving my skate skiing, so that's the reason for that! But I don't like being cold either, so I have many different gloves, mittens, hats, and lots of fleece!

Don't know if you saw the daily spark blog about running in the snow, maybe that would inspire an outdoor workout! If not, just enjoy the treadmill and know that summer will be here in a few months!

Yep, feeling the cold here too...between 5-10 degrees F here. Want to get out trying my cross country skiing soon, but not when it's THIS cold...brrr!

Snow really does limit workout options. I always consider joing a gym in the winter, but it would be a waist of money in the summer as you can go outside and do so much!

I agree cold weather go away. I live in Florida and we have had 5 days in a row of freezing temps with 2 more predicted. It has snowed today in Orlando and Tampa and is coming my way. It won't be much snow, not like you get, but it will be a marvel to see.

I know how you feel, I'm not an extreme cold or heat person; I love fall, if only it could stay that way year-round! At least you have the treadmill, and can still walk in the warmth of your home! Good luck to you, have a great day!
