first time running 4 miles

Friday, May 21, 2010

Prepping for sunday and my first official 5K, I ran on street tonight. I ran from my house to my brothers, 2 miles away. I switched to a walk 4 or 5 times in first two miles and had water. I was worried that I couldnt do it, but kept going. I got to his house and checked stopwatch. I ran it in 20 minutes. 2 miles at 10 minutes each. WooHoo!!!!!!! I guess I could do it. I had some water and put foot up a few and then headed back out. I did it first time so I knew I could do it again. Shin splints were bothering me so I was starting to question the 10 minute break. But I kept going, less stops and I tried to slow down a little and did second 2 miles in 21.75. Thats less than 11 minutes a mile. WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! I now have stretched and am icing my foot but even though I walked a driveway length a half dozen times, I still did it. Now I know I definatley can do sunday. emoticon

I think I'm ready

Thursday, May 20, 2010

I have run at the gym 3.25 miles 3 times this week. Today I did it in 39 minutes. (12 minute mile). Tomorrow I plan on running outside to prep for sunday. My brothers house is 2 miles from mine with no hills, so I plan on running to his house. maybe take a bathroom break and get some water then run home the 2 miles back. I know I can do it. Just have to remember to time it so I can see how I do. My first official 5K will be at Evans Run in Norwell on sunday morning. I am so excited, I know i can do this and already am looking forward to improving my time at a second one in June. Everyone please pray for good weather. there is a threat at moment for scattered showers some time during the day and I want it to hold off. Wish me luck. emoticon

my garden

Saturday, May 15, 2010

thanks to a spark friend, I was inspired to get my butt up this morning and get out into my garden and weed and clean. A little background. I have 6 great raised beds that I have had for about 10 years, but the last 3 or so, between my carpal tunnel and life in general, I have left them to go wild. But I was inspired this week to reach for what I want and I saw those beds all cleaned up with vegetables growing in them in the near future and I just got out there today. It looked like soo much work but I just kept my head to one bed at a time. I ended up taking 5 carts of weeds and sticks way out in the woods and got them all done. I even put weed block sheets of plastic over the beds so nothing new comes in. I plan on putting peat moss in them next weekend and then lime in the fall so the soil will be great for my vegetables next year. I know that preparation is necessary for growing wonderful plants and vegetables and I will be doing it one step at a time, just like my diet and exercise routine will one step at a time make me the person I want to be for my future. Thanks for the boost Bill.

i ALSO HAVE RAISED BEDS, AND DO I LOVE THEM! iF YOU USE HYDRATED LIME,IT WORKS MUCH QUICKER THAN HYDRATED LIME, AND YOU COULD BE PLANTING THIS YEAR. EVEN IT YOU DIDN'T WANT TO BOTHER WITH FRESH VEGGIES, HOW NICE TO TREAT YOURSELF TO A CUTTING GARDEN. FLOWERS THAT YOU CAN GO OUT AND CUT FOR ARRANGEMENTS IN THE HOUSE WITHOUT STRIPPING YOUR FLOWER BEDS. I WANT TO DO ONE OF THESE THIS YEAR. I LOVE BRINGING IN FRESH FLOWERS TOPUT IN VASES, BUT HATE TAKING AWAY FROM MY FLOWER BEDS. ANYWAYS,IT'S GOOD TOBE OUT DIGGING AGAIN IN THE SPRING, ISN'T IT?

I am feeling more confident each day

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

I panicked yesterday morning thinking that I couldnt run a half mile without heart jumping out of my chest, but last night I ran a half mile, four times for a total of 2 miles plus warmup and cooldown to equal 3 miles in 39 minutes. Tonight I ran for .8 miles three times for total running of 2.5 miles plus warmup and cooldown equaling 3.15 in 39 minutes. Looking good. I am only home from gym a couple minutes and already look forward to running a mile tomorrow night. I mailed my registration for the 5K today. I took the step to make it real and was so excited, I told everyone at work. They are all excited for me. I have to thank all my spark friends for their support too. this is something for the last 30 years I never thought I could do, but always hoped I could. People here let me know that age doesnt mean you can no longer do things. I am already thinking of a second race. emoticon

You are doing a great job!! I am really impressed AND encouraged. Some days I am not sure that I can drive 3+ miles, let alone run that far. And good job getting the registration sent in and sharing with everyone at work. That really helps to give you a boost at doing well in the 5k. But you have crossed the biggest hurdle already....you are looking forward to the NEXT run. Whether it is tomorrow's training run or the next 5k....you are looking forward. You are now officially a runner. Not a walker, not a jogger, not a bystander....you are a runner. Sounds pretty good doesn't it? Good for you.

Also....thanks for stopping by and commenting on my work in the yard yesterday. I guess I am still a kid at heart as I like digging in the dirt and planting those flowers. I am not just a digger, I am a planter. Doesn't sound as cool as being a runner. But it is a start. :-)

I hope that you have a great rest of the week.....Bill

two weeks to first 5K

Monday, May 10, 2010

went to gym tonight and alternated between running a half a mile and walking at 4mph for .2 miles. ran total of 2 miles. tomorrow I plan on bettering that either by longer runs or 3 miles instead of two. I have two weeks to build endurance up before my first 5K. I think I have enlisted a friend at the gym to join me and he knows Im training for my first so I think he will keep pace with me or maybe alittle faster for me to keep pace with him. he even told me about another 5K that takes place 4 weeks after my first one. I really am looking forward to this. I know I can do it, and I will be proving it to the world in two weeks. emoticon

Great job on your dedication to training. Are you only training on a treadmill?

I wish you the best:)
