Tomorrow is National Trails Day!

Friday, June 03, 2011

Thanks to Shape magazine, not only do I know about this site, but I am now informed that Saturday, June 4th is National Trails Day. There are about 2,000 events taking place around the US. Apparently you can find them at www.americanhiking.org

Never hiked before? NO problem!!

Let me first state that even when I was super-duper out of shape (like can't walk up a flight of stairs without being winded), I could still do a hard section of trails in my area. This hard-section being comprable to the hardest parts of the Appalachian Trail! It took me a little longer than it takes me now, but I was able to do it.

Why hike? Because you burn an INSANE amount of calories! (How many calories? About 1,000 for 2 hours!!) It truly fulfills the purpose of "food is our energy" (if that makes sense).

Plus, what is better than fresh air?

Custy? Be sure to dress in layers, where comfortable shoes (trail runners are best, but not necessary), comfortable socks (you DON'T want to get blisters!), bring backpack to stuff with goodies (foods high in protein- nuts, granola, oats, etc! In fact, last week, my friend and i split an avacado and used the skin as a bowl and dipped pita bread into it! YUM!) and bring WATER!!!!!!

Definitely check out a trail map (they are almost always online in .pdf form- print it, toss it in your pack).

I personally love bringing my dog (best motivator ever- beagles are hyper)... if you do the same, make sure you bring a leash and poop bags!

I'm taking a couple of my students tomorrow- and I'm giving them extra-credit in return!

Enjoy the weekend!!

Wow, it just deleted my last entry!

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Long story short:

I have not lost weight in 4 days, but I have lost a lot of size! I didn't even notice until my mother mentioned something when I went by my parents' house over the weekend. I fit into a pair of jeans that have not fit me in over 2 years!! Woohoo!

Growing up I was a very picky eater. As an Irish-American, I was raised on a limited diet that revolved around meat and potatoes. Absolute cliche, but the solid truth! Obviously I had to branch out.

Recent faves?
Avacado, Cottage cheese, and quinoa.

What are your favorite foods?

iPhone Apps :)

Saturday, May 21, 2011

I am a huge fan of LoseIt.com (for entering my food intake), LogYourRun.com, and (of course) SparkPeople.com
All 3 have apps on the iPhone and make this all very easy.

What do you guys use? Any recommendations?

Jerk Alert!

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Despite the fact that I stepped on my scale this am and felt awesome, I overheard a student call me fat about an hour ago. I can't believe I let it bum me out. I obviously pretended as if I didn't hear him, but really kid??? Oh well. Sophomore boys are not real people anyway. lol. Besides, karma's a biznatch. ...right?

Kids haven't learned the lesson of how hurtful words are. Keep your chin up. You're doing a great job!

I agree, don't let ignorant people get you down. A good rule I learned is to never let another person change your mood except you. Don't let someone have that power of you. Keep doing what you're doing and you will have continued success. Much luck!

We're getting there!

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

I stepped on the scale today and it says that I have gained 2 pounds.

Instead of tearing my hair out, I laughed! Because I've been doing really well! I understand that whole quick muscle gain, then weight-loss thing. I suppose I'm just blogging it to let others know that is what happens in the beginning. lol.

I had an awesome weekend up in northern Maine whitewater rafting- beautiful weather! After battling 16 miles of continuous Class IV rapids, my body wanted to eat everything I could think of. Lucky for me, the company I raft with had a pig roast and a "to-die-for" bean salad for me to scarf. :D

I'm still a bit sore from rafting, so for the past 2 days I've taken moderate 2 mile walks. I've been tracking them with a new app for my iPhone called LYRFREE. It's great! It even stops the timer when you stop moving.

Anyway, have a great evening!
AND if anyone has a recipe for a bean salad (or any awesome recipes), please feel free to message me (or post for others to see).

Happy Trails!
