Do you own the kayaks or are you renting....I think of kayaking often but haven't actually been able to get out there to do it. Will have to try it again.

I love kayaking. I started last year, and have been paddling regularly as weather permits. Did you join the kayaking Sparkteam?

Oganic garden update

Monday, July 08, 2013

Just posting a quick update on the garden. It's growing! We thinned out a few things, lost one pepper plant to the bugs and we have since started using organic food grade DE. It seems to be working very well.

OMGoodness- your food looks awesome... I am so jealous- we have such shade and clay soil I can't plant much... but I have memories of food coming right out of the soil when I was a kid and it was amazingly better than what you get once it is picked and let to sit for a while... happy and healthy eating

PS- my parents always smile when someone says organic- and I tell them that is what they ate all the time when they were young... they are now on board with organic.

I didn't plant much.. but my pepper plants were nibbled on by something as well.

Did you start the plants from seed? I suppose that guarantees it being organic.

Organic Garden

Sunday, June 02, 2013

So far we have had great success with our strawberries emoticon lettuce emoticon onions emoticon as well as dill, cilantro, basil and mint. We have had plenty of salad for the last two months. emoticon emoticon

What we have learned so far:

•Don't overcrowd.. Follow space guidelines
*our cabbage didn't have enough room

•Bib lettuce is easier to grow than iceberg
*less of an issue w/the slugs

•Have a plan for slugs..they are gross and will eat just about any green leaf

•Don't let cilantro grow until it flowers unless you want coriander seeds

•Prune buds off basil

•Use marigolds and lavender to help keep pests away

Our tomato, cucumber and pepper plants are coming along fine. We may put in eggplant today or tomorrow.

Gardens are so rewarding. Learning from year to year what works and what doesn't is part of the fun of gardening. Yours sure looks great. I want to try Bib Lettuce. My Mom says it is good and crisp.

    Great looking garden!

My slug secret--take a small dish (like a drip dish from a small pot). Bury between plants so the lip is even with the ground. Fill the dish w/beer. Slug like the smell of beer but will drown in it. Empty and refill every couple of days. emoticon

April, May and our Garden:-)

Monday, May 06, 2013

April was a great month! I didn't quite get to the 2500 minutes I set out to reach but I think some of that was from trying to figure out this new tracker. I did manage to be consistent with strength training the entire month. emoticon I think I had less coffee too.:-) Of course, I have been getting more outdoor activity that I don't track but is in addition to my workouts.

So far so good for May. Took the day off Sunday, then had a hard time getting motivated today. I hopped on Spark people to get that extra motivation. :-) (did get a 30 min walk in) Planning on a run in the morning.

We are just thrilled with our garden so far! It's very satisfying to grow your own food. No need to worry about pesticides and GMOs.:-)

Hey how did I miss this one? Must have been AWOL. ;)

lettuce looks yummy

We visit a farmers field in our area for organic produce and we pick it ourselves. This year I asked hubby to plant cherry tomatoes and squash and peppers. Our fruit trees are going nuts this year and the nectarines are already ripe!

Looks very tasty! Sounds like your doing excellent! I'm up late tonight trying to jump start my sputtering motor... emoticon I ate bread last week and it always messes with my head and the scale .. figured it's time to do a little hardcore focusing. Thus, glad I caught your blog! emoticon emoticon
