Running for Boston!

The tragedy in Boston at the Marathon on Monday has really hit me hard. By God's grace one of my best friends was unable to run the race due to injury and I was not at that finish line watching her finish the race when the bombs went off (her projected race time would have put her at the finishing line right at the time they went off). By God's grace her and her husband decided to watch her friend who was running from mile 22 not the finish line and her friend's family was at the finish but uninjured. So many people were not so lucky. I have been praying and crying for these people so much the past couple of days.
I was out running when the tragedy happened and came back to see the news on in my home. The news shocked me. Never did I think anyone would have to fear for their lives as either a spectator or runner in a race.
Runners are strong though and we will pull together and get through this. I have joined an event on Facebook called Run 26.2 for Boston where people are dedicating their next 26.2 miles of running to the people affected by the bombings. I am also racing a local 10l this Sunday and am going to dedicate my run to those affected. Currently I am trying to think of some way to visually represent this. If there weren't running involved in the dedication I would make a cotton t-shirt that said I was dedicating the activity to it but I don't like running in cotton so that option is out. Right now I am just thinking that I will make a small sign and pin it to the back of my shirt, any other thoughts on what I could do would be appreciated.

    There is actually a race bib you can print out at that some are using. It says 4-15-13 then has a picture white outline of the skyline of Boston with the words BOSTON in the pic, and then below it says Runners United To Remember. They have 3 versions, one with black background and white words and image, one with white background with black words and image, and one that has a purple background with white lettering except the word Boston in the image is in black. you can just download and print it out if you want. I love that runners are so united.
I also want to ask everyone to remember Sandy Hook and what they must be feeling right now. Mile 26 was dedicated to them and I read that a horn was used to start the race for the first time ever instead of a gun for them. To have such a senseless act of violence happen at the point in the race dedicated to them must bring back all the pain all over again, with new pain. I can't help but think of them too in this. To me they are now linked together in this with Boston.

    I'm so glad to hear that those you love are okay and were not hurt. No one ever anticipates such devastation and danger at an event that is supposed to bring everyone together.

I just signed up for the "Run 26.2 for Boston" on FB, starting tonight w/ a 5 mile run! I have a half marathon in June and I'll definitely be wearing something in their honor! Thanks for the FB link!

    Great idea. My husband and I are running a 12k this weekend, I'd like to do the same at our race.

I'm happy to hear that those people you know (including yourself) were not injured.

    I was reading about the London Marathon this weekend. They are encouraging runners to wear a Black Ribbon to honor those affected in Boston.

Feeling like I'm back in the game

So Saturday's 4 mile race went pretty well. I was 24 seconds over my 45 minute time goal, which is not bad although I'm kicking myself over it a bit because I think that if there hadn't been a curve in the road just before the finish line and I had been able to see the finish line ahead of me earlier I would have pushed it out and finished under my time goal because once I turned that corner and saw the finish line i was really flying. Even with this disappointment though I felt like I was back in the game which I couldn't have said after my previous race which due to weather complications was a very slow race.
On Sunday I made it out for a very slow 8k run for recovery before going to church and it felt really good, I wasn't too sore or anything. I haven't been out since though because I took Monday off since i was a little sore after my longer run on Sunday and now I have come down with a nasty cold and haven't been feeling up to working out. Hopefully I will be able to make it out tomorrow.

Racing on Saturday

So I am somewhat unexpectedly racing on Saturday. I signed up for the race a long time ago but then thought that I would be unable to race it due to my hours at my new job, but the other day things fell through with the job for various reasons and so I am going to be racing it after all.
This race is a kind of weird one for me because it is an unusual distance (4 miles) and I had never run the exact distance before yesterday because I wasn't planning on running in the race until just a couple days ago.
Yesterday I went out for a practice run just to get an idea of what my time goal should be since I usually run either less or more than 4 miles. My time for my practice run was 47 minutes so I am aiming for 45 minutes in the race.
I'm hoping that this race will go better than my last one and I am thinking that unless something weird comes up it will since the main problems at the last race were weather related and it is supposed to be really nice on Saturday.

In other news I ran my first 10k run since coming back from my knee injury the other day and it felt great. It actually felt better than my 10k ever felt before taking time off which was exciting to notice. I am impressed by this not only because I feel that I have bounced back quickly from my time off but because the route that I ran it on was a really difficult hilly route and I am not always terribly good at hills. Hopefully this is a good indication that I am training well and am not overdoing it and tiring myself out like I was in the Fall.

Well, I'm out for now. I will try to get up a race report this weekend but it may not happen until Monday with Easter being this Sunday and all.

Not around much recently but still working out

So I haven't been on Sparkpeople much recently and probably won't be for the next couple weeks. I have just started a new job and it is all I can do to make it out for my run or onto the elliptical machine while I get used to my new hours. So until everything feels a little more routine I won't be on here much.
I have still been getting out running several times a week and getting some strength training in, hopefully now that I am out of work training I can get settled into a more regular workout schedule.

Disappointing race time but still a good time!

So as those of you who regularly read my blog know I ran my first 5k race since getting back to running. I had a great time goal and playlist to help me reach my time goal but the weather was against me. I think I would have reached my time goal if it hadn't been for the storm on Thursday and Friday and the crazy wind that was still around from the storm. At the start of the race I lost what was probably a full 2 minutes due to the road being flooded and everybody trying to go through a very small space to get around the flood. Then for about half of the race the wind was so strong that I felt as if I was running against a wall and therefore was running slower than normal. Because of these two less than ideal racing conditions I came in at 37:40 which is slower than even some of my training runs.
Even with the fact that I was disappointed in my time I had a great time! The race offered as much pizza and beer as you wanted post-race and my dad and my sister walked the race and joined me for the post-race activities! We each had 2 beers and a couple slices of pizza and enjoyed relaxing after the race!
Hopefully at my next race (a 10k at the end of April) the weather will be better and I will really be able to race it.

    That sounds awesome. Sorry about the conditions, but it's terrific that you were still able to enjoy the experience.
