Dallas, here I come!

Thursday, January 02, 2014

I am well into my new fitness program and couldn't be happier. I have had a fitbit now for just over a year and it has made a world of difference. I originally set a goal for 10 floors a day and am now up to 25 a day. I was at 5 miles a day and now I am up to 7 miles a day! Each year for the last couple of years, I have gone on a virtual walk. The first trip I took was from my home in Michigan to my brother's home in Georgia. It was a total of 722 miles. This year I got my co-workers involved. Each of them picked a place in the continental United States. The winner was drawn out of a plastic bag and ended up being Dallas, Texas. From my house, that is a total of 1185 miles. What will make this trip especially fun is that my co-workers have put a map on our office wall so they can track my progress! That should keep me motivated! Dallas, here I come!

How do you do a virtual walk? I know others who have done this but never asked.

New Year, New Beginning

Wednesday, January 01, 2014

I can't believe another year has gone by. It seems like every new year starts with me making a "resolution" to get back on track and lose this unwanted weight. The difference this year is that I started planning on how I was going to do it about a month ago. I started getting workout plans together and plotted out a strict workout schedule for the next 2 months. I have very specific goals each day. I figure if I can concentrate on each day individually, it might help me accomplish my goals easier. I started today with a sequence of squats, push-ups, sit-ups and then strength training with some dumbbells. I even talked my daughter into going to the gym with me and walked on the treadmill for almost an hour. All in all, I feel good about my first day! I won't think about tomorrow's schedule until tomorrow and have forbidden myself from weighing in until next Saturday so that I can get a full 10 days in. No pressure! Hopefully by then I will see just the results I need to keep me motivated. Happy 2014! Happy me!

I think you are headed in the right direction. One of my biggest problems in finding which direction to go in my strength training. If you have that direction, follow through is all you need. emoticon

My advice to you is to take measurements of your body as well and check those when you weigh in. There are some weeks I don't lose any weight but I do lose inches. So doing both helps to keep me motivated or lets me know I haven't done enough. Keep up the great work!

A record day.....so far

Monday, January 07, 2013

I started my day with the mindset that I needed to set a goal and hit it. So I decided to start with floors climbed and set a goal of 50 floors. I hit that with no problem and decided to try for 75. Without looking at my Fitbit, I set out to get my badge for 75 floors in a day. Well, I just finished my stairs for the day and finished the day with 102 floors! It didn't feel like I went that far but I guess listening to my Ipod distracted me just enough that I pushed myself without realizing it. Just have a little bit more to go with my daily steps before I call it a day. I'd have to say, this is my best day.....so far!

Back on track - BIG time!!!

Sunday, January 06, 2013

Well, my one night off turned into a day and a half but I made up for it today! It was really cold outside so I couldn't go for an outdoor walk. Instead I broke out my Wii Fit and played my Walk It Out game. I was having so much fun that before I knew it, I had gone over 8 miles! It was so much fun and was a great workout! I'm going to use this to my advantage until I get my treadmill fixed. Rest time is over for me, now it's time to kick it into gear and make this virtual walk to Las Vegas. Nevada, here I come!

Not my best day

Friday, January 04, 2013

I woke up this morning with the best of intentions of meeting all of my daily goals. I was all set until I got to work. One of my coworkers has a 23 year old daughter that was experiencing headaches and earaches in the beginning of December. As her symptoms worsened, she ended up being taken to the ER with severe vomiting and nausea. After a CT scan, it was discovered that she had a large mass at the base of her skull that was the size of a golf ball. She had emergency surgery and the mass was removed. She did remarkably well and was able to come home on Christmas Eve to spend the holidays with her family. Today the pathology report came back and it has been determined that the tumor was cancerous. Having children near the same age, I found it hard to concentrate on much of anything else. Instead of doing my stairs on my lunch break, I found myself sitting in the chapel asking God to protect this unfortunate girl and at the same time thank Him for blessing me with 3 beautiful, healthy children in my life. I came home from work and hugged each of them, then told each one how much they mean to me and how grateful I am to have them. I decided to spend my evening with them instead of doing my workouts. I'm still dedicated but I felt it necessary both mentally and emotionally to take this night off. I will make up for it tomorrow. For the rest of tonight my goal is simply to pray.

You did the right thing praying for your friend and her daughter. May God bless you and this family. We are so bless to have healthy families something we never should take for granted. Perhaps when you exercise and get tired do one more thing for them lifting them up in prayer as you do it! Hugs. Pat

It does make you count your own blessings when you are remindee how very fragile life is. I think it is a good thing to take the day off of your workouts. When your mind and heart is elsewhere it would be hard to get in a good workout.
