Sunday's Run

Monday, June 29, 2009

Well, Jason and I took two days off of exercise (Friday and Saturday) for one reason or another but I was proud of myself at the run last night.

I completed the first mile WITH Suezette and Charlene - I was pretty proud of that since they've been doing it more consistently than I have. I had to take a breather after that and I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get going again because I was feeling very tired but when they came back around Jason and I both joined them and stuck with them for the last 2 laps. We even got to take a nice break in the middle of it because we got caught in a rainstorm. All in all - we completed about 4 miles last night. Pretty cool!

I'm sure Jason and I are back to the gym tonight. Woohoo!

Kathy = Determination

ARGH! I had this all typed out and lost it!! That is SO FRUSTRATING!!!

I know I shouldn't have run last night but we got a full hour in at the gym and I did a 10 minute warmup on the treadmill at a 15% incline then COMPLETED the 5K! Except the treadmill thinks that a 5K is more like 3 1/2 miles! I completed it in 45 minutes - I did have to slow it down several times to catch my breath and get a drink but I still did it! I did the whole last 3/4 mile without stopping too. It felt so good.

Best of all - I dropped TWO pounds this week!

I finally feel like I'm making progress!!

That's because you *are* making progress!!! Huge progress! Did the treadmill have a warm up or cool down figured into the workout? It makes no sense that a piece of exercise equipment doesn't know what a 5k is!

Oh, my response yesterday...I lost it before it posted, so I took a screen shot of the frozen window and pasted it into word to retype after I restarted explorer...that's how much I wanted to comment on your blog, lol. I hate it when computers don't cooperate.

Well, as you know, Jason and I joined a gym. We've been so busy since we joined but finally was able to go last night. It was late - about 9:10 when we got there (they close at 10:00) so we didn't have a lot of time to waste getting started. I told Jason I was going to hit the treadmill because I feel like I'll get the most bang for my buck there.

At first, I couldn't decide which program to do so I played with the various programs available; most of them were walking programs but I wanted to run. So I've been eye-balling the "5K Run" program and decided to give it a shot around 9:30. It put me on a 10 minute mile and I was able to do most of it but had to force it to allow me to walk a few times....seems walking is not programmed into a "run" on a treadmill! Because of time constraints, I was able to complete 2.5 miles in the 25 minutes I had available to me. At 10 til 10 Jason was starting to ask how much longer I was going to be so I told him 5 minutes. If I had taken that extra 5 minutes, I could have completed it but didn't know if they'd be kicking us out at 10. Either way, I know I put in at least a half mile on the walks prior to doing the 5K program so I feel good doing what I did.

I was hoping that it would be cooler being in a gym but even that did not prevent me from sweating profusely! Jason had the foresight to bring in a towel (I brought one too, but left it in the car) and I had to use it several times to wipe the sweat from my head. I was proud of myself for being able to run as much as I did even though my shins hurt on the treadmill. They didn't hurt to the point of having to stop, but they hurt more than what they did when I was at Wickham. I was sure to ice them when I got home so hopefully they'll be healed by the time I try again.

Oh, someone forgot to forewarn me how WEIRD it feels to get OFF the treadmill!! When standing still, I felt like I was moving backwards!! How weird!!

Jason is such a good motivator - he told me he was proud of me and I think he even mentioned me being a "machine" at one point. It's just a good feeling to be able to get up there and run and it makes me proud of myself.

Have a great day everyone!

Which Planet Fitness did you join? I belong to the one in Rockledge and love it. I've shut the place down at 10:00 before, also! Unfortunately, I've not been going as regularly as I'd like, but I'm determined to get there before the day is over.

I once tried the 5K setting on the treadmill, and was CONSTANTLY moving down the pace! I had no idea it was going to try to make me run the whole thing. I'm very impressed by how great you did!

Oh, you mean I didn't mention to you how much I sweat when I use my treadmill? LOL

I'm STILL jealous of your gym membership and will definitely be your guest sometimes. Don't forget to check on the spinning class!

Awesome! I love treadmills, especially when you just tell it how fast to make you run and then try to keep up. I'm sorry your shins were hurting though...could you try ellipticalling for a few days so that they're better for Wickham? My shins don't hurt when I elliptical but our shin pain may be in different areas so you may not have any relief from ellipticalling...or you could alternate, 10 minutes running, 15 minutes ellipticalling, maybe even bike too? I just know how much sihn pain sucks and I was so excited for you that yours was better. Especially ocnsidering how much icing them sucks! I was reading a book in Barnes and Noble the other day that said ice as soon as you work out and then wrap them in warm damp towels or a heating pad set on low later on that night...that's a little different than what I was trying when I was trying to treat mine, so maybe that'd help?

Maybe, Jason said you were a lean, mean running machine emoticon

I am so proud of you. You look so good already and I can just imagine your getting toned and looking even better.

You did good emoticon emoticon

I can only imagine getting of the treadmill and feeling that way. That is why I can't use one. It makes me sick to my stomach. Dr said it's because it's repetitive motion. When walking or running on the ground you have obstacles, you move in different positions and adjust, whereas on a treadmill it's the same thing over and over.

Hope that gets better for you.

emoticon for posting. I like hearing bout my friends and their ups and downs and accomplishments

No exercise tonight but...

Saturday, June 20, 2009

Jason and I bought new mp3 players and joined Planet Fitness! We didn't work out tonight because I had to get homework at least half way done before tomorrow and it's quite time consuming, as I'm sure you know!

My mp3 player has "wireless" headphones (they're wired together but not to the unit), it has an armband and a pedometer and stopwatch. Still not a Garmin with a calorie counter (or rib band), but it's pretty nice! It'll make running easier since I won't have to deal with wires from my head to the unit. I think we're going to make our first trip to PF tomorrow or Sunday.

Jason got the month-to-month contract and I got the PF black card because that way I can take Jennifer or a friend to the gym with me. We're hoping to make Jennifer appreciate exercise, because I know how much she hated gym in school and she has to learn that exercise is a part of life if she wants to be healthy.

Jason did not get as high-tech of a mp3 player but he's loving the one he got. He FEELS high-tech now, he said! LOL! He's had a multitude of pocket radio's so he can listen to Howard on the Sirius but now he's loving the selection of songs.

Well, have a great night!

I'm so jealous of the gym membership!! I checked into them here but there is only one in Sebastian. And the ones in Vero are on the south side and so they are quite a drive too.

I want to join a gym and have a gym buddie to go with..... emoticon

Can I borrow some of your cheese for my whine? LOL

That's awesome! I'm so jealous...no headphone wires! I wish we had a gym nearby, the one on the base is pretty good, but it's 30 minutes away. I hope you have a good time when you make it back to workout, it sounds like you're ready!

Woo on the gym membership! I'd get one, if I knew I'd go at least 5 days a week to make the cost worthwhile, but I can't guarantee something like that.. so, I'm comfortable with what I've got- my home plan!

I think it's great, though, that you and your family are trying to do the right thing and make exercise fun. I remember when I was in Jr. High, and most of P.E. was just physical activities of one way or another, and then one year we did a Personal Fitness class, and THAT'S when they introduced weights and strength training. Those of us who weren't strong or haven't had much experience in weights before didn't do too well. And some just didn't get into it after failing the first few times.

Several years later, I'm kicking myself in the butt for not trying to get into it better- but hopefully by seeing REAL PEOPLE at a REAL GYM, and being able to do things that she won't get graded on, your daughter will learn to enjoy it the way a REAL PERSON should.

Good luck!

Tuesday's Run

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Jason and I went out running again tonight near our house. We walked just over a mile to a local elementary school then ran a mile and a half on their track in 15 minutes. My shins are still feeling good. They're a little bit sore but nothing like they had been. I'm hoping that they're finally catching up to the rest of me. I'm icing them just to be safe but I gotta go shower. It did start to rain while we were out, not that we weren't wet enough!

Have a great evening!
