The Reason for this Journey

Monday, May 06, 2013

Its time to bring my self back around to the reason why I need to lose this weight and get healthy. Yes, it would be nice to see the lower number on the scale but I know it isn't about that. Part of the reason I guess is for vanity's sake. I would love to go clothes shopping and be able to buy some of the nice things they seem to have in smaller sizes and look in the mirror and feel good about what is looking back at me. I know I would feel better about my self if I took control of my weight and did something about it. When I am exercising regularly I know I feel on top of the world and good about myself. But the most important reason for me to lose this weight is for my health. My dad was a diabetic and had many health problems attributed to that. He loved his food and when he did finally take control of things the damage was already done to his body. I don't want to make the same mistake because I want to be able to spend my older years being active and enjoying myself. I don't want to be taking 10+ pills a day to keep me going, that is not a fun way to live. It is crazy not to do what you need to do to avoid this later in life. We all have control for the most part of what turns our health takes when it comes to illnesses that develop because of poor eating and exercise habits. There is enough out there that we don't have control over when it comes to health, doesn't it make sense to embrace those things you can change so you can have the quality of life you want?

it takes quite a lot of constant effort, and the results & rewards are only felt years later. you have to keep reminding yourself of that!
I know some people who were diagnosed with diabetes, then they lost weight and poof! the diabetes was gone.
hang on in there.

Workout Excuses

Thursday, April 25, 2013

My number one workout excuse is that I don't have time. I have an hour commute to work in the morning so I am waking up early as it is. I don't want to walk at lunchtime because I will get hot and sweaty and don't want to sit at my desk like that. When I get home I have to make dinner, do wash, pick up, sometimes I don't sit down until 9 p.m.!! I take the stairs at work and do park aways from the entrance so I have a little walk but that is it. Its very hard to carve out time during the week to get any exercise in. I used to not have a problem when I worked closer to home but since my job moved it just seems like I don't have time during the week for much. The only solution I can see is wake up earlier which would have to be 4:30 a.m. and I just dont kniow about that. Any suggestions or solutions are welcome!!! emoticon

You have to believe that it is good for you. And it is worth the effort to make it a habit. Once it is a habit, it will be easier.

You can work out in 4 minute increments. Google "Tabata" for examples. You can download Tabata music from iTunes. It will time you for 20 seconds of intense exercise and 10 seconds for 8 "rounds" for a total of 4 minutes.

I Tabata situps, planks kettlebells, jumping jacks, wall squats, marching in place etc etc. for short rounds of exercise through out the day, or I do it in longer, more intense rounds at the gym.

You can also "hoop" or march in place while watching TV.

Take care!

Like BGUMBA says, checkmout the little things you can do - don't forget squats, toe touches, etc when you take a potty break. Lift soup cans while cooking, or do something which microwaving. Good luck!

Check out chair exercises and desk exercises here on SparkPeople. Every little bit helps. A lot of the housework we do can be turned into exercise. Do a few "laundry basket lifts" for strength training or grab a couple laps around the office during the day. Try to think of ways to be more active as you do your routine tasks. Just the little things can make a difference.

Starting again

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

I've been absent from Sparkpeople for awhile and I did gain back about 10 lbs of what I lost, plus I still have more than that to lose. The positives I kept while being away from here is I no longer drink diet sodas, but drink mostly water. I did still keep 10 of the 20 lbs. off. I came back to sparkpeople where I know I can get myself back on track with all the tools and encouragement from this site. Starting back here has triggered all those positives I had when I first found this site so I am hopeful it will motivate me and get me back on track and starting to think about getting healthy. Because that is what it is all about, it is not about crazy diets, pills, or any fads that really don't work. Its about changing your mindset and making good habits. Even though I gave up for awhile, all the tools that sparkpeople gave me are still in my head and ready to be used. I hope to be successful this time and even if I stumble along the way I will not give up! emoticon emoticon

Going back to where I started!

Thursday, September 15, 2011

Well, the summer is over and I am finally getting a minute to catch my breath and reflect on the past few months. Somewhere, somehow life got in the way of my journey to better health. I haven't done any serious exercise the past few months and my healthier eating habits went right out the window. As a result when I got on the scale this morning I was looking at 201, the dreaded 200's that I have been trying to get away from and I am looking at it again. The only one to blame is myself, I stopped putting myself first and let everything take priority. The funny thing is when I was really working it I felt like nothing was happening, but since I have stopped I can really see how much better I looked and felt. The weight I have gained has went right to my stomach and when I look in the mirror and remember how I looked at the beginning of the summer I can't believe what a difference there is. To all of you out there that are trying your hardest to eat better and get back into shape and feel like nothing is happening, don't kid yourself, things are happening. Just stop for awhile and you will see what a difference there is. So now, here I am at the crossroads again. Trying to get the motivation to begin and the question is where to start. My sister bought me the Dukan Diet book, but I've been the low carb route before and it is very tough. I know this is a little bit different from Atkins but I don't like to restrict food groups, it only causes problems when you stray away. You end up binging on the foods you were avoiding. I guess for now I will take baby steps and try to eat healthier and get moving again. Not to have a pity party but I really don't like myself the way I look right now and I'm mad that I let this happen. I need to backtrack a little bit and find the motivation I need to start again. I know Sparkpeople is the answer. No where else can you find the information and support you need to succeed and it doesn't cost anything. You can't beat that! emoticon

Kathi!!! Remember how you felt when you lost your 20 lbs! You DID That!! Good for you for opening you eyes and knowing where you "Went Wrong"! I dont do "Diets" Never have, never will! I love to eat food...so if I think I need something thats BAD for me, I have it in small portions.
You know the same thing happend to me. When my weight started getting put back on, it appears that its all in the stomach. And the worse part- when I lost my weight, my brest went too. The only difference, when the weight came back, my brests didnt!! HAHA So, theres no more balance or lack of noticing my belly cause my brest kind of hid it when I looked down. Not anymore!
Anyway...enough with my silly self. You have already had a path in the right direction. Turn around and make your way back down it! You CAN DO IT! Find that streghth that got you started last time, and remember its FOR YOU, FROM YOU, TO YOU! emoticon emoticon

Small successes

Thursday, June 16, 2011

Well, last nite was one of those nights when I could have really gone into serious snacking mode! I thought about eating potato chips and I told myself I didn't need them, if I want to lose some weight I have to stay away from those. Then before I went to bed, I was going to have a small piece of entenmenn's raspberry twist and again I told myself I didn't need to do that, I had my snack for the night before - a skinny cow ice cream sandwich and that should be it for the night. I can't believe the self talk worked, but I reminded myself that I wanted to get the weight loss started again and if I eat all these extras its not going to happen. Hopefully this works the next time I have the munchies or had a bad day and want to eat! emoticon

That's great!! I find myself having to do that, too, but it does work most of the time.

Glad to see you are commending yourself on your success, no matter how big or small.

Keep up the good work!! emoticon
