Day 279: Outta steam--?

Thursday, October 06, 2011

...outta ideas, outta time, just plain outta.

Over the course of my checkered career I've worked at a couple of newspapers - nothing fancy, just hometown dailies.

At the last job I had a weekly column in the Features section, every Wednesday. Much of the section was dummied-up on Monday, with anything current pasted in on Tuesday night.

Since mine wasn't a news item but a standing assignment my deadline was Sunday night. Midnight.

And although I swore up one side and down the other that 'NEXT week I'm gonna get it done early--!' inevitably, what with one thing and another, 11 PM Sunday night would find me in the newsroom desperately trying to put something - anything - together for the column.

That pressure is off, so far as the SP blogs are concerned. The only commitment is of my own making. One of my resolutions on 1 January was to post a daily blog - no matter how long, how short, what topic... every day, for at least this year.

So far, I've met that goal. And there're now fewer than 100 days until the end of the year.

But sometimes, when I want to write something more meaningful than 'Okay, it's short, g'night,' I am so strongly reminded of those Sunday nights as midnight loomed ever closer.

Tonight's like that.

Oh, sure, I always have a reason (read: excuse). I was busy, I ran out of time, I had other priorities. Always a reason.

Anyway, this is The Blog That Wasn't, as it's not what I would've liked to have written, but it is what it is.

Goodnight, Sparklers, wherever you are!

Your Blog That Wasn't actually said a lot! I understand though. When it's a choice between more sleep or full-fledged blog, I can't blame you for chosing the former. And not every day is memorable. I commend you for blogging daily though. Happy weekend!

Hey Kasey!--I used to have a column in our local newspaper--I called the ""Merri go round!!-""---If I didn't write that, I think I'd hace gone nutty raising 5 kids almost alone. That column kept me sane!--But I do remember the deadlines and sitting up at the last minute trying to get it the way I liked--I also remember the frustrationon my part, when they left out a line. Anyway, our internet was out almost 24 hrs--thought I would go crazy--- It's on now so I'm up trying to do a catch -up in case it goes down again!--I enjoy yer blogs----- Hope you keep them up--- They inspire me --just knowing another person is struggling thru the same day that I am--Ha Ha --Lynda in the warm north land! emoticon

Day 278: REALLY short!

Wednesday, October 05, 2011

Got in another couple of hours in the yard, but the rain moved in this afternoon, and it's been torrential off and on the last few hours, so - reprieve for tomorrow!

Which is just as well, since it's grocery day, plus we go to order Himself's new specs, I plan to go to the drugstore, a department store, and run some errands, so there wouldn't be time for chores or anything. One of these days, I hope to find the time to catch up with SP and everybody's news. But I guess it won't be tonight, since it's just about 11 PM.

I'm not entirely sure where my children are, but I know where I'm gonna be in about two minutes, lol...

Goodnight, Sparklers, wherever you are!

Why is time flying by so fast???? When we were kids, do you remember how long it took for summer vacation to come?? Or if you were like me, how long it took for school to start?? (I started to get bored by about the middle of August!) And Christmas just took forever getting here! Now I practically miss holidays, they get here so quickly!

I think we should give up on sleeping so we can get everything done!! LOL

Day 277: Laziness

Tuesday, October 04, 2011

I am lazy.

No, I mean it: I really am.

I don't do things until I feel absolutely forced to. Take the yard. (I hear the voice of Henny Youngman add 'Please!')

What needs doing is the result of years of neglect. Oh, I don't mean to imply that the grass has been let go to knee-high or that the weeds have taken over. Entirely.

But instead of spreading this work out over the last few years, a little at a time, balanced between the two of us, we've only done the bare necessities to keep the jungle at bay. And boy, am I paying the price.

I would say 'We are paying the price,' except Himself never seems to have any problems with bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, raking, digging... I mean, the man has a bad back, but he's like The Energizer Bunny. He keeps on going.

But I got my butt in gear early this morning and was outside by 9:30. I put in three hours. The really gratifying thing is, because it was let go so long, everything I do - anything I do - looks 1000% better. So there's a silver lining after all.

Fixed lunch, had a second cup of coffee (which I never do - maybe that's why I got a lot of stuff done today), called my aunt and gabbed for an hour. (When the timer went off to tell me it was time to say goodbye - so I get the cheap rates on the calling plan - both she and I didn't want to stop, so it was definitely a good conversation.)

Then I vacuumed the front and washed the entryway and half-bath floors. I was going to do the utility room and give the kitchen a once-over, but I was tired and it was time to start supper by then, so - it will have to wait.

Bleached the toilets and gave them a thorough brushing. (Not that you're necessarily interested in that; it's just an example of how much I got done today.)

I found two online sources for cheap bulbs, but I need to get a move on and get them ordered. Himself has an eye exam tomorrow with the local optometrist (handy, that, since with the eyedrops he can't drive, and I don't drive here anymore). While he's there, I'll see if I can get the orders finished up.

Now, I feel like I got a lot done, certainly compared to one of those days when I spend most of the day on the computer or reading, doing little of consequence.

So can someone tell me why the 'Yet To Be Done List' is three times longer than the 'Did It List'? lol...

Goodnight, Sparklers, wherever you are!

Productivity has a way of highlighting ways that productivity can be put to further use the same way that weight loss points the way to the necessity for losing more.

The "Yet to be Done" list is so long because a lot of it is trivial chores that don't ultimately mean much. Who will remember whether you made your bed or the relative cleanliness of your closet? Okay I get it that you care, or at least you're supposed to and maybe like me you don't. There are so many things I wish I could scratch off the to-do list without actually doing them. Maybe we're not lazy. We're unmotivated probably because we think we could be better spending our time doing other things like meaningful human interaction or R and R. Yea?

P.S. This rationale absolutely does not apply to a nasty toilet bowl. Some trivial things absolutely require our attention!

"To do" list longer than "done" list? Join the club.

I have written myself a note that I hang on my cubicle. It is intended to remind me to go home at the end of the day instead of working longer: "Nobody dies with an empty in-box" it says. "Except Uncle Richard."

Uncle Richard, I must further explain, was my dad's sister's husband. He was a farmer, and he was so organized! He died on the last day of their small farm's fiscal year! Which fit his personality to a T.

Rest well my "supposedly" lazy friend! emoticon

We all procrastinate and put off things we don't enjoy - like exercise!!

Just biting the bullet, making a plan and getting it done then makes us feel 100 times better. Almost as if we could achieve anything.

Getting outside in particular really gives us that extra boost. You should do it more often!!!

Well done!!!

Day 276: Another Bizzy Day

Monday, October 03, 2011

Got the grocery list made up, went to two - count 'em, two - different supermarkets. Got home just in time to fix lunch. Did that - an hour's break - and off to the doctor to get (finally) the report about the knee x-ray.

It shows nothing.

Well, I could really get rolling on a good gripe about that, but I'm too tired tonight, so it will have to wait.

Spent the rest of the afternoon working in the yard, and lost all track of time (tho I thought I had my phone set for 'timer' and it was in my pocket but I messed up something in the settings - sigh...) so was late to start supper. This is why I always keep a couple convenience meals in the freezer. And lousy nutrition aside, with a tossed salad and some fresh blackberries (!) it made for a decent dinner after all.

Some eBay surfing (looking for garden benches - and do you think there are any end-of-season cheapies out there that people just want to get rid of? 'course not), catching up on some news, conversation with a cousin, and... that's it for today.

You know, I seriously am tired. But I still think there's more to it, as I hurt all the time. Sore muscles, aching joints... just plain hurt. Is this what getting old(er) is? Is there no recovering of strength, endurance, fitness? I mean, to my way of thinking, as long as the body is working correctly, we aren't aware of internal organs or muscles or joints. When I'm at the computer and thinking, in the back of my mind, 'Knee hurts... knee hurts... knee hurts...' that doesn't seem right.

Walk around and 'Foot hurts... foot hurts... foot hurts...' Lifted a bag of groceries onto the counter - not an especially heavy bag, either - and my back twinged. Oh, it's down to a dull roar, but it's making its presence known. Hips hurt, wrist hurts, everything just hurts.

Eh. Pardon my whine.

Anyway, between the aches & pains and the tiredness, I'm more than ready for bed. When did sleep stop being refreshing?

ARGHHHHHH!!!

Enough, enough. Goodnight, Sparklers, wherever you are!

You know that DH had a knee op a few months ago? Well that was for a torn cartilidge (sp) and nothing shows on x-ray for that, but the consultant at hospital could tell from the examination she did on him, poking and prodding and turning etc. Worth an ask for 2nd opinion.
Although things do just ache as we get older, and I can tell when we are to have rain with my knee...lol..handy to know when to take a brolly emoticon emoticon

I'll join you in your whinging -- don't you think we make a lovely duet? "My back hurts, my knee hurts, my right elbow hurts, and so does my left shoulder. I'm tired, I'm too tired to do all this work". I would pay almost anything to have my body back -- the one that just mostly worked, without all this kerfuffle & capsules.

Sound like an old geezer, don't I? Most days lately I feel like one too. And isn't that a pretty kettle of fish!

Day 275: Sunday Mornin'

Sunday, October 02, 2011

Well, it's not really about Sunday morning, exactly. When I sat down here to do a blog, Spanky and Our Gang's (the group, that is, not the old B&W comedy shorts) old song came into my head. Remember them?

Anyway, this will be a short one. I really did have a lazy Sunday - oh, I caught up a load of laundry, did the dishes, tidied up the kitchen... nothing major, nothing labor-intensive. It's been raining off and on all day, so it was a perfect excuse for doing nothing, since I couldn't do any yardwork. (Not that I missed it, lol.)

So that's me done. One of these days I'm going to catch up with each and every one of you, but not today: I'm tired. Goodnight, Sparklers, wherever you are!
