Day 89, Part I: Short 'n' Sassy

Off to go 'n' do in a moment - bizzy day today, with a doctor's appointment for BP check, amongst other things, but while I was skimming the headlines, I found this:

Day 88: Well, I'll be darned--!

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." --Charles Dickens, 'A Tale of Two Cities'

No, it wasn't like that today - no dramatic ups and downs (for which I'm glad, mind you), nothing major or outstanding in either direction. This was one of the 'in-between' days, neither the peak nor the trough. But it was a good day, all the same. Why? I hear you ask, lol...

I started out the day with a dozen time-consuming items on my To-Do list. There were more things I wanted to put on it (to people I owe letters to: I'll have an email off to you soon, I promise!) (you know who you are) but I put the top ten and added two more than could be held over until tomorrow, if need be. But I got them all done 'n' dusted. So I'll be darned, for today at least, the magic worked!

Some of it was the run-of-the-mill stuff - folding laundry and putting it away kind of stuff. Some was the on-going sorting and cleaning; I did the linen closet today. And there was stuff like submitting my taxes online, listing some stuff on eBay, setting up two future doctors' appointments (yes, that seems never ending, lol), sorting a small file of papers, and I ordered a book an old friend has had published. As soon as it arrives (which they assure me will be within 5 working days) I will read it post-haste, write a review, then tell you all the details so you can all read it as well. I am really looking forward to it!

And I'm going to go do Beatleband so Himself doesn't feel lonesome, lol...

Goodnight, Sparklers, wherever you are!

Oh, and BTW, I got my HbA1c back today while I had the doctor's office on the phone - 5.3%! Now how's that for good news?

Day 87: Grumble, grumble...

Monday, March 28, 2011

Nobody likes me -
Everybody hates me!
I'm going out in the garden and eat worms!
Big fat juicy ones,
Little teeny-tiny ones -
Oohh, how the squishy ones squirm!

This came to mind today because Himself said 'I'm going out in the garden.' He'd never heard the rhyme.

The English don't have 'yards,' they have 'gardens.' They plant flowers in the front garden... they might have a table and chairs in the back garden... and sometimes they have a garden path, lol. For quite a while, whenever anyone said they had been gardening or that their garden was coming along well, I thought they meant as in vegetable garden. Not so. In some ways I've had to learn a foreign language, for all that they speak English. And thank goodness for that. I have enough trouble learning the random word or phrase here and there. I really doubt I could become fluent in a totally different language.

Well, bit of a digression there. I was going to grumble - about Joe and about my windowsills now being covered in bird droppings - but I'll let it slide. Yes, he's been tapping on the windows all day, and no, I didn't get around to trying the foil or a mirror, and yes, the light in the rooms was a temporary delay, but he's back at it. And today I did notice the windowsills. Himself went around the house (it's all one story) two weeks ago cleaning the woodwork and touching up the stain here and there. Looked quite spiffy. Not so spiffy now, at least on these two windowsills. Hrmph.

Groceries, laundry, clean-the-kitchen day, made cauliflower casserole for lunch, veggie burgers with sautéed peppers-n-onions for supper, and in between I did doctors' appointments, updated insurance info, got the 1099 for taxes, paid a couple bills... and didn't get the Sparkin' done. I think I will have to give Beatleband a pass tonight and get my stats logged - I don't think I've missed a day for logging meals since I came back to Spark in 2009, so I'll go and do and then I think I'll call it a night.

You know, I miss catching up with you all - reading your comments and blogs, checking out the discussions and ideas. And I thought retirement was gonna be easy, with puh-len-tee of time to do anything I wanted to. Hah.

Goodnight, Sparklers, wherever you are!

I have my summer off, from the middle of June until the end of August and I always have these huge plans to fix up the house, to organize, to finish projects that have been sitting for years...what do I do...NOTHING! I enjoy the freedom of not having to do anything in the summer, to walk the beach at our cottage to sit and read for hours at a time, to visit with friends and family...and do I feel guilty...NOT ONE BIT!     Fun posting...I woke up to a few inches of a powdery snow all over everything this morning..so white and still...beautiful. The sun came out, optimistic to bring on a full Spring, but it was not to be. Either way, I hung laundry out in the 'garden' today as an experiment...it dried. I am so looking forward to full on Spring so that my children and I may hike again and watch the eating of worms by all the Robins and the barnyard...I mean, 'garden' fowl....that my youngest son is currently raising in his brooders.

I remember slightly different lyrics, "guess I'll go eat worms, Down go the slick ones, Down go the fuzzy ones, oh, how they tickle when they squirm!"

We proceeded to do a slightly less in good taste second verse...
"Everybody loves me,
Nobody hates me,
Shouldn't have eaten those worms!
Up... come slick ones...
Up... come the fuzzy ones...
Oh how they tickle when they squirm."

My mother was prone to make up her own lyrics when she couldn't remember the real ones... I seem to have inherited the trait. And now I know a variation, which may, in fact, be the real verse, thanks to Kasey!

Rest well... and my Nutty Joe find another hobby... soon! emoticon emoticon

Learning how to maintain the loss and be comfortable in my new skin is really a challenge. I started slipping with my sparking and realized this weekend it could easily be the beginning of a slippery slope! Back to it with a vengeance.

Day 86: Just Another Day...

Sunday, March 27, 2011

Nothing to discuss, nothing to bring up, nothing to talk about. Not a peep out of the realtor. Wonder if I scared them off? (Do I look worried? lol)

Nutty Joe was back at it, but was pretty much dissuaded by lights on in the rooms. Since he never goes to the other sides of the house - to other windows - I am even more convinced it's a question of reflection. Because of the time change he didn't tap on the window until after I was already awake. Now I just hope he really does find a mate and forgets all about windows and reflections.

Sat with Himself while the race was on. As I said yesterday, I take a bit of interest in it - certainly in the outcome - but it's not something I watch closely, gathering in every detail. So I worked away on The Washington Post's mega-sudoku. Didn't finish it, you understand; I seldom do. But it's fun to toy with all the same.

Proofed a paper my daughter wrote for one of her classes. Oh, the wonders of the internet!

Other than that, dried some clothes, did the usual housework routine, and went thru both my stretching exercises and the WiiFit sequence I've been doing. My weight has plateaued again - not enough exercise these last couple of days, and even the shifting about of totes and cleaning out closets isn't quite strenuous enough, thinks me. I haven't started eating over my calorie range, so I don't think I'll gain anything - I surely HOPE not, at any rate! I'll see how it goes when the dust settles a little, and if things don't start happening then, I will revamp the exercising and gear it up a bit.

Himself has a cousin coming to visit for a couple days at the end of the week. If I need any incentive to keep the house clean, regardless of prospective buyers, that'll do it. I've never met her before so I want the house super neat and tidy.

There's my cue - I hear Beatle music from the other room. A few minutes of pounding drums for some exercise and it's done for the day.

Goodnight, Sparklers, wherever you are!

Day 85: Saturday 'n' Birdbrain 'n' Stuff

Saturday, March 26, 2011

I deliberately set the alarm for a half-hour earlier than usual because tonight we change the clocks ahead an hour and I figure if I get up a half-hour earlier today, and a half-hour earlier tomorrow, by Monday I'll be on the right time. Or something like that.

It's technically 10:20 so not my bedtime yet, but Himself has changed all the clocks in the house (except my computer, which he's forbidden to touch, lol) so my mind is already confused - kind of its normal state of affairs.

I didn't accomplish much today, in some ways. We took pictures of some things we want to sell on eBay, I did some sorting / packing (the new totes were burning a hole in my closet, ha ha). Himself watched the Formula I qualifying races from Australia. I sat with him (always do, when it's race weekend) tho I mostly worked on a sudoku, just glancing up occasionally so I could follow what was happening. Tomorrow it will be about three hours of that. On the one hand I sort of feel as tho I could be doing something much more productive with that chunk of time, but it's become a tradition now of long standing, and I enjoy the puzzles or knitting or reading or whatever relaxing activity I choose to do with the time while keeping Himself company, so I'm looking forward to it. The work will still be there Monday when I get back to it.

No more calls from the realtors - hope I haven't jinxed the process here or something. I know some of you have said it took months to sell your houses, so I am trying to practice patience. Really is an antsy thing tho, ain't?

Re Nutty Joe: well, I must be getting used to him. Hubby said he had been tapping at the window a full forty minutes before I woke up and heard him. ('course, after yesterday, I was pretty tired!) Joe has discovered my office window (my office / library is next to the bedroom, so it wasn't much of a stretch, I guess). Since both windows face the same direction it makes me even more sure that it has something to do with reflection, either of the light or of himself or something that has made Joe become obsessive with trying to fly thru / at the window panes.

When I came in here this morning and saw him fluttering around I turned on the ceiling light. He flew away and didn't come back - well, not to this one. I didn't think to check the bedroom window. Now, that's no solution for the bedroom, because darned if I'm going to turn the light on early, so I still might resort to the foil trick and see if it works. But I'm also thinking that changing the clocks may mean he's at the window an hour later than he has been, so it might not disturb me anyway. Sooner or later, I figure either the light will shift, or he'll find a Mrs Joe, or something, and go live his little birdie life. Meanwhile, if worst comes to worst, I'll turn the light on in the room.

And that's it, really. I dislike getting so far behind on the things I usually do (keeping up with you all here on SP, reading blogs, checking out the message boards, etc) but for the nonce, I don't think there's much I can do about it, so I'm not letting it stress me out. Do forgive, and I will be writing reams of responses and opinions and what-not before you know it. I sincerely appreciate your comments and replies - I learn so much from you all, and I am so grateful.

Goodnight, Sparklers, wherever you are!

I wish you great luck with the house sale. Here in the states, houses are a drug on the market and the only people buying are investers. Sigh!

For years, I thought my house would help fund my old age, Now, I am getting help to stay in my house through a chore service! the service helps with things we can't do any more, like starting my lawn mower. Once started, I CAN cut the grass myself! Cleaning the outside windows is not somethhing I have EVER wished to do, now I can get someone to do it for me at $7 per hour. WooHoo!

I think it's great how you sit and keep Himself company. You've got me thinking about sitting with DH when he is watching his shows. Most times, I don't want to waste my time so I do other things, but you have me thinking about my "wasted time" notion.Usually, if I do sit with him, I think I annoy him because I start to talk too much or ask questions...I will practice just sitting, maybe with my Kindle or something to occupy me. He may enjoy me sitting with him, if I don't get too chatty. You gave me food for thought...

I think you are getting used to Nutty Joe. From having had a parakeet and watching him behave in a similar manner, I'm fairly confident Joe is seeing his reflection and mistaking it for a mate. Does he leave a residue on the glass? My Zoe (I know, we thought he was a female at first) used to "feed" his mirror mate and would tap, tap, tap all morning. It was his ritual. He lived 18 years, which is long for a parakeet, and every morning he fed his *girlfriend*...lol You would think after 18 years, he would catch on! LOL
