Day 1

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Lent for me (Greek Orthodox) started yesterday and I figured it was as good a time as any (post St. Patrick's Day!) to get going on my goals. Hence "Day 1."

So I tracked food (and realized I forgot to log some stuff, oops... tough to get back into the habit) and got on the exercise bike for a half hour. It felt good to "get back into it." I need to remember that. I did a good job getting 30 lbs off after the pregnancy by last September, but I've put it all back on, sadly.

But moving onward...

Lots of new stuff on the horizon. I am now the mom of a toddler. She is starting a new school two days a week starting next week which I'm a bit nervous about (but happy that I got an email today letting me know school was closed due to snow - her old school that she's currently enrolled in didn't). We've also hired two of the teachers (a mother and daughter) from her old school to come to the house three days a week (each taking a different day). She loves them, and I'm happy that she will have more attentive care (and outdoor time) most of the week and still have the benefit of other children around some of the time.

I have been recommended for a permanent job! Right now I am still accepting clients at my office and writing freelance for a website and a law firm. It's a frenetic lifestyle made even crazier by having to drive her to daycare all the time and working nights at the office sometimes. I should be getting an offer letter soon, and I most likely will accept the job and keep one of my writing jobs and take the occasional client. It will be nice to have a little stability in my life and it will also be nice to come home to a clean house and a (hopefully) happy little girl every day.

Jon and I went looking at bikes this weekend since we should be getting our tax refund soon. It excites me to have a new activity to do together as a family, so hopefully we can do that this spring! I've decided to restart Couch to 5K tonight and I know it won't be pretty, but my goal is to do a 5K in June and a 10K in October.

That's basically it! Hope everyone is doing well.

I had to click on this to see what days you were counting. Well, I'm Russian Orthodox! I've made it my priority to make it to Easter also so we're in this together!

And I can't believe your little girl is a toddler. I remember reading your blog from when before you were even pregnant! My gosh!

I started with a group called No Boundaries as a 5K training and have assumed the role of last one in.. and its definitely not pretty.. but hey at least I don't have to worry about being in anyone's way!
Best of luck climbing back on board.. emoticon emoticon

Here I Am

Monday, March 04, 2013

February was another hell of a month, (ear tubes surgery for Keira, mono for Jon, lots of work for me) but I am back onboard in March.

I am challenging myself to do something active every day (even SparkGuy's (in)famous 10 minutes a day) and to log my food at least 5 times per week. I rode my exercise bike last night and realized how easy it is to get unfit in just a few short months.

But I'm working at looking forward though, and not backwards (thanks, SPUNKYDUCKY). It'd be easy to look at some of the photos from 2010 when I was at my thinnest and fittest and get depressed, but...

Sometimes this journey will not be the #1, #2 or even #3 or #4 priority in your life, and you just have to be OK with that.

Love you! Thanks for the shoutout! I am so happy that you are back on the horse (cycle). Once you get going, nothing is going to stop you...Winter has been hard and we DESERVE spring. I am thinking (precontemplation stage) about running. I hate being afraid! I am so afraid after finally getting rid of PF that if I start running it will suddenly be back. I just need to find a nice, super slow training schedule and get stretching my feet. I would like to do a triathlon this summer (should probably find one and sign up). Call if you need some inspiration. I am at a conference in Denver all week.

Hellacious months happen all the time and I'm going through one myself so trust me on this. Hang in there. It will pass. Doing something active every day is a HUGE step in the right direction. If for no other reason, it is a great stress reliever and we could certainly use that!

Congrats! You can look back at those pictures but when you do you have to remember what you have today that you didn't have then and that is that precious little girl in your life. I think it takes a long time to figure out how to incorporate a new regime when you go through a major life change like that. I think a key is to do those small moments of exercise and activity when you can fit them in. It will be easier when you can get outside with her a bit more too. Keep plugging along...you will get it all worked out.

Forward motion, that's the way to do it!! 10 minutes every day is an achievable goal (and for me, sometimes it becomes 20 or 30!) Spring is coming and it will get easier to stay motivated.

My niece (the one who had the brain tumor a year ago) has made it through her treatments and is now training for the Chicago Spring 1/2 Marathon; she's up to 4 miles! She asked me to join her group; I'm not sure if I can go yet because the date isn't the greatest for me but I figured I would at least try to get ready. Like you wrote, it sure is easy to get unfit and I have some work ahead of me!

Learning to Treat Myself Well Again

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

Hi everyone! I hope your holidays were happy and that you are looking forward to a wonderful 2013. I sure am.

I'm not going to lie. The last part of 2012 (going back to work full-time) was a huge adjustment for me, and I struggled to make time for myself. That needs to change. We were also really sick for most of the season. Tomorrow we take Keira to the ear nose and throat doctor to talk about getting tubes to help with her ears. I can't wait to finally have a solution.

Becoming a mom for the first time is a wonderful thing and I love my family, but for someone who has always been independent and as an only child accustomed to "alone time" it can be difficult at times. It's also hard when you don't have support of from your parents. I need to accept that and stop being resentful.

So I just wanted to say hi to everyone and make a commitment to myself again and getting back in shape and learning how to love myself more. I have been falling victim to a lot of negative self-talk lately. I'm happy that I haven't gained any weight since my whirlwind autumn, but I still need to lose 50 lbs to get back to where I was in 2010.

Have you talked with your parents? Perhaps having them maybe watch the baby for a hour while you exercise. I know my mom and dad will watch my girl now that she is older 1 1/2 yrs of age. I think they are easier and less clingy. I am so with you! on finding me time.

Happy New Year to you and yours too... it is tough to find 'me time' and it, as you know, is really important to do (and if one has the time to use it creatively rather than vegging)... its too bad that your parents aren't giving the support you wish they'd give and its good that you can accept that without resenting them as that resentment would only be hurtful to you - for whatever their reasons might be they are valid to them - Once Keira's older she can learn to give you that time and hopefully in the meantime you can find it now and again...
Good luck getting your mojo back - I feel confident you will..

I am in the same place that you are! It's so much harder when you have a young child and no support. My family lives 900 miles away, my husband works nights, and I work days, and we split child care. So we barely see each other, and my "alone" time after she goes to bed at night, is trying to fit about 4 hours of house work into two! I wrote a blog today about "Valid Excuses" but having to try and find a way to do it anyway.

Just remember, baby steps. This isn't an all or nothing lifestyle.

Pick one little thing - maybe 10 minutes that you can sit down and journal - and when that becomes a routine for your household, try another little thing. Just keep building on that and eventually you will be back into the groove.

You are not selling this "pop a baby out, already!" like the rest of mine and Mike's family is trying to tell us every.single.day. ;-) We are pretty much the same person, so I fear I would have the same issues.

Anyway, that's not the point! The point is that I am happy to see you here, and I know that you can do this, you just have to re-believe, and make time for YOURSELF! YOU deserve it, but it is also up to you to ask for help(which is OK!), and ask for a little ME TIME to get your ish done! I am only a text or call away if you need an extra cheerleader or an @$$ beating- you know this! Maybe we can get a challenge going? Fitness minutes? % lost? pounds lost? I don't know. I'm bad at brainstorming that kind of stuff, but if you think of something interesting and wanna get down, let me know!

You are RIGHT on all fronts here- take care of you and the rest will be okay :-)

I don't get help from my Mom either- it's okay. She raised me, did her best- it's not like some kind of right of mine to have her help me.. that's how I see it. I know it seems unfair, but you are tougher for it!

You can do it! :D No, really, you did it before, you can do it again. No one is more important to you than YOU! You can't be a good wife, mother and employee if you don't take care of yourself first.

Happy new year!

Happy November!

Thursday, November 01, 2012

I'm sorry I have been out of touch with my SparkFriends, and I hope you are doing well, especially those of you hit hard by Sandy. Here's what's up:

emoticonKeira is crawling like crazy, loving daycare and being with the other babies, and is just such a happy, bright and good-natured child. And yeah, she loves pumpkins. Especially pumpkin bread. And she was a zebra for Halloween.

emoticonI walked a half marathon a month ago. The same one I ran in 2010. And it hurt way more. Still, given I haven't been as active, I will take my 17-minute mile average! Not too bad.

emoticonI am working full-time. I started taking clients and I got super lucky and scored a string of freelance writing jobs that adds up to a real paycheck and I can scarcely believe it. I am also taking Friday to spend with Keira for as long as I'm able.

emoticonDay 1 of November and I need to get back to what works and feel more energized and get back to exercise (at least three cardio sessions and SOME strength training) and tracking. I have been maintaining in the 230s pretty much since a couple months after Keira was born.

So for November, I want to check in at least with a status update with how I did for the day. Keep me accountable if you can. Sadly, I am not able to browse SP blogs like I used to because I'm paid for how much I write so I have an incentive to be productive!

wow...ridiculously cute zebra! I'm so glad you've found good work (fun?) and it sounds like things are improving.

In the past you've been part of what has inspired me to start (ore restart!) C25K plans. I just started a wicked slow turtle speed plan (32 weeks!!) for a half marathon in June 2013. I know I can walk it....heck, I could walk a full one too...but the goal is to run as much as possible.

Glad to see you back!

I know the feeling. But at the very least keep up with whatever logs you keep so as to keep yourself accountable.

Sounds like things are going well - Keira is beautiful and makes a great looking zebra. I seem to have finally broken out of my rut and after a month of pure living and exercise I feel about 200% better (yay!). Keep moving forward. Hope to see you out in Boston this spring or summer

    Hi Lady,
Again, (and yes, again) I am taking this month to get back on track.
Let's do this.

I have a wedding in 2 months in which I have to wear a cocktail dress!

So happy to see a new blog from you, you are one of the emoticon that keeps me motivated. after a long sedentary summer, i am ready to start running. plantar faciatitis sidelined me, and 110+ temps kept me there. No Excuses! If you can do it, I can do it! emoticon
You little girl is so cute, great to hear that work is working out and you still get your Fridays with her. My baby is turning 11 this year, but I still remember when she was that age like it was yesterday. It does go by too fast!

Thanks for checking in with an update. Life sometimes gets a little full, doesn't it? Good stuff with the writing and clients and of course Kiera, but finding time for everything becomes a challenge. Do what you need to do for you; remember to take care of yourself along with your beautiful little girl.

My, Keira sure is a cutie.

I'm glad that you have found employment that you enjoy. That is sure a change of pace!!

Congratulations on walking a half-marathon. I'm not sure I could walk half of a 5k.

It's good to see that you are maintaining, even if it is not quite where you want to be. That's what I've been doing, with good weeks and not so good weeks. I just need to concentrate and get with the program. I got a FitBit a little over a month ago, mainly to see how my sleep is. But I am ramping up my exercise since I got it. Amazing what an incentive that little gadget is.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
