February Recap & March Goals

Monday, March 01, 2010

February was another challenging month. I started off the month in grief from the death of my cat, then I was in a car accident that put me in physiotherapy, then I travelled to the UK to see my husband's family, then I struggled with getting back into a regular exercise routine when I returned. I tried to do a Raw Food Challenge but my body rebelled, and I switched to cleaner eating instead.

But I jolted myself to reality by the third week and joined the new gym ("fitness palace") and then ended the last week with a photo food blog that definitely got me back on track with my nutrition. I reached 209 and rewarded myself with a heart rate monitor. So I am going into March with great momentum.

RECAP RESULTS:

FEBRUARY:
-6 pounds
20 days of cardio exercise
2 days above calorie range (not including vacation)
Tracked 21 days (due to vacation)
1,170 fitness minutes
10,711 calories burned
Strength training lagged; maybe 1-2x week
Running on hold due to injury

FEBRUARY GOALS:

-Keep on trackin' (except for vacation)
Despite my other shortfalls this month, I DID track every day except for my seven vacation days and I did not gain weight while on vacation, so sensible choices are sticking!
emoticon

-Lose 7+ pounds in February
I'm surprised. I came very close here! I'm at 208 this morning and started February at 214. Tomorrow is my official weigh-in and I might be at 7+ lbs by then. This was an ambitious goal for a short month and I think I did very well with it.
emoticon

-Complete raw food challenge and incorporate more fresh fruit/veg in meals
I DEFINITELY ate more fresh fruit and veggies this month and I feel a lot better for it. My raw food challenge didn't go so great. Halfway into Day 1, my body temperature dropped and I felt weak despite eating 1000+ calories before dinner. Not the best experiment in the winter! I decided to switch to a clean eating challenge and I did complete 3 days of eating wholly non-processed food. It was a great experience and I am definitely happy I did it!
emoticon

-Eat sensibly on vacation and continue to do something active every day
I think I did great on this goal. I ate better on vacation than the week that I came back from it! I made it a point to use the hotel's gym and pool and to take walks every day. I kept portions reasonable while still enjoying a lot of treats (cake! wine!).
emoticon

-1,700+ fitness minutes
I definitely fell short here, despite it being a very ambitious goal for a short month. I ended the month with 1,170 minutes. Half of this was being sidelined the first week by the jerk who rear-ended my car. And the other half was completely my fault and for being lazy and skipping the gym for four days after returning from the UK.
emoticon

-Meet sodium levels at least 5 out of 7 days per week
I met sodium levels about 4 out of 7 days per week. It's a great start!
emoticon

-Start 10K training program
I couldn't do this due to my back injury, but I am starting it again tomorrow!
emoticon

-Complete 30 day challenges and continue strength training
I completed the 30 day challenge on EA Sports, but lagged on strength training. Only did about 1-2 sessions per week. Need to reup on my strength!
emoticon

-Run 40 miles this month
Due to injury, I only ran about 28 miles this month. It's OK. I'm back in action!
emoticon

-Actually use my water bottle and use it to measure 8 glasses per day!
I did this for the most part! I think I'm back to loving water again!
emoticon

-Food photo blog for one full week
emoticon

-Gym 5 days out of 7 on last week of February
I did a double session one day, so I'm counting it!
emoticon

MARCH GOALS:
emoticon emoticon emoticon
-My goal set last year was to meet ONEDERLAND by 4/1. This would be -9 lbs, which is high, but I'm going to go for it!!!
-1,500+ fitness minutes
-Run the St. Patrick's 5K
-Meet sodium levels 5 out of 7 days per week
-Continue to eat lots of fruit/veggies
-Start 10K training program
-Food blog 2 days this month

Sunday Food Blog

Sunday, February 28, 2010

This is the last food blog in my weeklong series. It's been so fun doing food blogs with DRRAZZ and SUGIRL06. Thanks for so much inspiration! I'll still do a food blog every so often. It's really helped keep me ontrack all week and I'm pumped to start March on the right foot!

BREAKFAST:

Joseph's Flax Pita with 1 tbsp Blue Diamond Almond Butter with Honey and 1 tbsp Victoria Plum Jam. Cup of coffee with nonfat milk.

We were scheduled to meet friends for dim sum this afternoon, so I had a small breakfast. The almond butter was nice and creamy with the right touch of sweetness. Just right to tide me over!

LUNCH

Dim Sum!

I haven't been to dim sum in so long mostly because my husband doesn't like it very much, but I finally convinced him to go meet friends at our local place. SO GOOD. Dim sum is actually not too bad for you as long as you stick to the steamed items. Of course, the calorie totals on this are total guesses, but there were lots of SparkMembers who had some great nutrition tracker info.

I had 2 pieces of pork shumai, a BBQ pork bun, a steamed veggie dumpling, 2 steamed shrimp dumplings, sticky rice wrapped in a lotus leaf, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, and a taro rice cake.

DH ordered off the regular menu and had a yummy pan fried noodle with 8 delights (which we figured were shrimp, scallop, calamari, pork, chicken, beef, Chinese broccoli and water chestnuts). I had a bite and it was delicious.

I only went out to eat once this week! And this was a great treat. There was even lion dancing in the restaurant!

DINNER:

Yummy strawberry and peach smoothie

1/2 cup Trader Joe's Nonfat Plain Greek Yogurt, 1 cup frozen unsweetened strawberries, 3/4 cup frozen peaches, 1 cup Blue Diamond Almond Breeze milk, 1/2 tbsp agave syrup

I didn't want a full meal after my big lunch, so this smoothie hit the spot. This was my first time trying a smoothie with plain Greek yogurt instead of regular vanilla yogurt and it was great! Only 60 calories and 11 grams of protein for 1/2 cup! It was a definite winner. It was not overly bitter at all. Also my first time with the blue agave syrup. Tasty! Added a nice kick!

SNACK

Trader Joe's Mango & Cream Bar

For STINA, yes this was amazing! Are the raspberry ones good? Like I said before, the mango is real and not artificial whatsoever.

DAILY TOTAL:

Calories: 1,346

Protein: 54 (low)
Sodium: Didn't get an accurate reading because of user-entered dim sum.

WORKOUT:

Today was a rest day, but it didn't feel like it since I was running around so much! I'm ready for a great month of March and a lot of great exercise too!

New Kitty

Sunday, February 28, 2010

As many of you know, we lost our beloved cat Seri last month. She battled diabetes for quite some time, but in the end, she died from liver cancer. I still miss her and think of her every single day.

I wasn't sure I was ready to get another cat, but our place felt so empty and we just felt sad every single night not having an animal around, My husband convinced me to go to the shelter today to at least see some of the cats and dogs that needed homes. We went to the MSPCA in Boston and it was such a wonderful place. The animals are handled with such love and care and it is bright and friendly rather than dark and sad like you might imagine a shelter might be.

I saw some of the cats and they were cute, but none that I saw fitting into our home. And then we met the sweet girl above, who loved being petted and held, but was still fiesty and playful. When we closed the cage door and she stuck her paw out and mewed.

She had chosen us!

They called her "Princess" at the shelter and she was one of four kittens who were surrendered because their human was pregnant and "didn't want to deal with the cat hair."

We've decided to call her Kimiko or Kimi for short. "Kimi" means Empress and "Ko" is Child in Japanese, so it's kind of an homage to her old name. We are picking her up tomorrow after she is spayed.

If anybody is considering adopting a pet, definitely take a look at your local shelter. You'll be making a huge difference in the life of an animal!

i love the new cat's name - my sister's daughter's middle name is Kameko - she was born in Japan while her dad (a Navy officer) was on the USS Tortuga - Kame = turtle, Ko = child. How fitting :). And kudos on the SPCA - no one, no one should buy a pet - rescues are awesome!

oh my god, get two get two get two!! haha! I never thought I'd be a cat person, then 2.5 years ago my husband (then boyfriend) convinced me to look at some kittens. I could not beleive it, but we ended up getting 2 of them! I am so happy we got 2, they are total buddies and play with each other and groom each other and snuggle. We ended up getting a third but that is a whole different story.

I totally agree about supporting shelters - in my mind, it's the only place to get a pet!! Congratulations, and welcome Kimi!

AWww congratulations on the new kitty. The reason for the previous owners getting rid of her seems pretty ridiculous - don't get a pet at all if you feel that way! They are around for a long time! Anyway - she is luck to have a great home now. Enjoy her :)

When I adopted my second cat (Smooshie) she was just a tiny little kitten - they found her and her brothers in a storm drain. The woman at the rescue opened the cage and she lept out onto my chest, grabbed on and started purring. How could I argue with that?

And what an awesome plug at the end - it is so important to adopt animals from the local shelter! That's all I ever had growing up was adopted animals...it was always so nice to give a loving home to a pet that might not have ever experienced it otherwise. :-)

Enjoy your new kitty!

Both of our cats came from the humane society here locally. I got Tessa before I met my husband and she picked me. Missy picked Jeff when we went looking for a second cat. It's really kind of funny, they prefer to be with the person they picked even 5 and 12+ years later.

Their pictures are in my photos, of course. Only kids we will ever have.

P.S. Missy is my icon right now.

What fun! We too are owned by a kitty.
When she adopted us, it took more than 3 days for the shelter to do a background check on us. During this time my dh said to me, "so when do we get to pick up the new kitty?" My reply..."I don't know, they're supposed to call me when the background check is complete." Dh's reply..."Hmmm...it takes longer to adopt a cat than it does to buy a firearm in this state!"

As it turns out, she is a bit of a "firecracker", so there may have been some intuitive wisdom going on there.

Congratulations to you and Kimi!! emoticon

Love your new kitty-she is so adorable!! We got our Kirby from a local vet. She was brought into the vet so infested with fleas that she was anemic and nearly dead. The vet saved her life only because we said we would give her a home. The vet did all the work to save her and spayed her all for free-just so this poor little kitten would have a chance at a real life. So glad you went to a shelter and saved a cute little furry life today!!

Saturday Food Blog ( + Skating!)

Sunday, February 28, 2010

Not the most stellar day fat- and sodium-wise, but for a weekend, it's not bad. One more day of food blogs left after this one!

BREAKFAST:

Two eggs, two strips low sodium bacon, slice of high fiber toast with Olivio light, 1/2 cup Heinz baked beans. Two cups coffee with nonfat milk (not pictured).

We like to have a big breakfast on Saturday mornings. My husband is from England and likes a traditional English breakfast, which has sausage, bacon, baked beans, fried bread, eggs, tomato, mushrooms and black pudding (ew). This was kind of like a mini version.

LUNCH

Bologna and provolone cheese sandwich on Italian bread with dab of mayo and sweet pickles

We were out running errands and stopped at my grandparents' and had a sandwich. Lots of healthy ingredients. There's something so "return to childhood" about a bologna and cheese sandwich.

DINNER:

Reduced fat smoked cheese, baby carrots, sourdough baguette and hard salami

After ice skating, we were tired after a long day and sat back with some pickies and a movie. DH ate most of this spread, but it was really easy to cut everything in small pieces and feel like you are eating a lot.

SNACKS

Three Anna's Swedish Thin Ginger Cookies (not pictured)

Had a few of these in the middle of the day and didn't take a photo.

1/2 White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Luna Bar

Split this with DH before ice skating.

Trader Joe's Mango & Cream Bar

Mmmm, this was SO good. One of the better purchases at Trader Joe's during the day. It tastes like fresh, not processed mango, and the bit of cream on the side was the perfect complement. Only 60 calories each.

I never understood the beans for breakfast in England. When I did my Queen Mary II cruise they had that as a choice every morning on the buffet in the English station aboard the ship. I guess it goes with the fact they drink their beer warm. YUCK! I have to drink that ice cold.

emoticon for your dinner being only 441 calories. That is quite hard to do with cheese and salami. You show all of us that we can have a varied diet and not feel deprived.

Trader Joe's: A Mars-Venus Story

Saturday, February 27, 2010

My husband and I went to Trader Joe's today. I was excited as we don't go very often (once every 2-3 months, I'd say) because while the prices there are good on the whole, we tend to buy things that we don't really need.

Also, because this is what happens:

ME: Oooh, they have reduced fat gouda cheese. Nice!
emoticon

DH: Oooh, double creme brie!
emoticon

ME: Frozen edamame, ahi tuna, salmon patties...
emoticon

DH: Super premium mint chocolate chip ice cream or chocolate? I don't know what to pick.
emoticon

ME (looking at label): 350 CALORIES FOR HALF A CUP?
emoticon

DH: Better get them both, just in case. And these creme brulee cups. You love creme brulee, don't you?
emoticon

ME: Aggh, you know it's my favorite! But seriously, we shouldn't get those. We should get the mango cream bars. Only 60 calories each.
emoticon

DH: We can try both!
emoticon

ME: OK, but I'll have to split the creme brulee with you...
emoticon

DH: OK. Oooh, chocolate covered pomegranate seeds!
emoticon

ME: Are you the one on your period now?
emoticon

DH: What??!
emoticon

ME: it's my TOM. Look at what I've put in the cart. Tofu, tomatoes, bananas, carrots, yogurt, fish and chicken burgers. Look at what you've put in the cart...
emoticon

DH: Ice cream, chips, brie, chocolate, french bread, pretzels...
emoticon

ME: I rest my case.
emoticon

More shopping ensues. DH disappears.

ME: Where have you been?
emoticon

DH: They're giving out free coffee, grilled cheese and chips over there!
emoticon

ME: But you're eating chocolate?
emoticon

DH: Oh yeah, and chocolate covered graham crackers. They were good. We should get some.
emoticon

ME: You're impossible.
emoticon

DH: Why are you buying that organic bread?
emoticon

ME: I dunno. It looks good. It's not too heavy.
emoticon

DH: But it's ORGANIC. That means they don't use pesticides.
emoticon

ME: Um, yeah?
emoticon

DH: That means it might have bugs on it!
emoticon

$97.50 later, we've got a freezer and fridge full of healthy stuff. And a few decidedly delicious but not-so-healthy items.

Yum!

This would be why my husband is not allowed to go grocery shopping. He went last weekend to the cheese story near our house, they have wonderful cheeses, salamis and such. He brought back cheese and 5 or 6 kinds of sausages and salamis! (I did not eat them but I did taste a couple!) He tells me that because he only eats a little (his view of a little) it is not bad for him!
