T-minus 2 days til 5K!

Thursday, September 24, 2009

It finally hit me last night that I'm running my first 5K on Saturday, which is made scarier by the fact that I still haven't made it up to 3 miles in my runs AND that due to injury, vacation, etc. I haven't been diligent with the C25K program.

So I started panicking.

What if I can't run at all?

What if I hurt my knee/ankle/leg?

What if I come in last?

What if one of the walkers beats me?

It got even more ridiculous to the point that I threw my hands up, and said out loud: "Eff it. Let's go run." It was 60F outside and beautiful and perfect running weather. And I ran. And ran. And I didn't really keep track of my mileage, but I ran for about 30 minutes. I know it wasn't 5K yet. Probably not over 2 miles.

But I need to remind myself a few things:

It's okay if I have to walk.

It's okay if I come in last.

The attempt is almost as sweet as victory.

I have raised over $500 for breast cancer research and relief.

I'm running on my husband's birthday, and he DOES have a knee injury, so he won't be running with me. I'm not sure if he will walk it either, which is weird to me that I'm going to be the one running, when he was always the runner. But I'm a bit selfish in that I HOPE he's able to get a photo of me crossing the finish line. I hope I make him proud on his birthday.

I can't wait to hear about the outcome of your first 5K. No matter what happens you are already a winner. You have the courage to even attempt this. It doesn't matter if you are able to run or walk the race. What matters is that you just go out there and do it. What ever the outcome is I am proud of you just for taking that 1st step. It doesn't matter if you come in last and by the way I already know you won't, what matters is that you finish the race and you will.

Good luck and go out there and kick you know what!

Hey! I just did my first 5K on September 12th. I had not run 3 miles previously either. I did just fine! My goal was to come in under 40 minutes and I did just that. I had to walk some. That last mile was killer but once I saw the finish line, there was no stopping me! You will do great. No matter how long it takes or how much you have to walk, just finishing is the biggest reward. Don't be nervous. Just get out there and run!

I am just in week 1 but I have some of the same hopes you do. My husband is deployed right now. I hope my friends can get a picture of me crossing the finish line (Nov. 21) and that when he sees that picture he will be proud of his wife and her HUGE accomplishment.

I have a feeling you will surprise yourself a bit on Saturday. I have a feeling you will cross that finish line saying ... "That was the finish line?" You have done a great thing for breast cancer research emoticon

you are right...you will finish! you're in no danger of not being able to go the distance. whether you run or walk, it doesn't matter...you'll still have that sense of accomplishment that you did it.

i felt the EXACT same way before my first race...i was worried that i was going to be last in my age group, that i wouldn't be able to run the whole thing - blah blah blah...but in the end, i did it, and you will too! just take it slow to start so you don't burn out too fast...in my experience, i always have run faster on race days because of all of the nervousness and adrenaline...YOU CAN DO IT!

I'm sure you'll be great!!! You're much better prepared than I was for my first 5k (7/4/09). My goal was to finish the race expecting there would be walkers finishing after me. I did finish the race with quite a few walking spurts (the path was VERY hilly and I hadn't planned for it) and I finished dead last. There were absolutely NO walkers that day. BUT I did it and you will too!! I wish you all the best!!! I'll be thinking about ya! emoticon

Happy B-day to your hubby! My birthday is Sat too!!

NOLA Report Card

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

I had a wonderful time in New Orleans and Mobile, and I will post pics and updates later when I'm not at work, but for now, I thought I'd grade myself on sticking to my plan. I weighed in this morning at 246, which isn't bad given a lot of it is probably salt and water retention and constipation (I know, TMI!)

NOLA REPORT CARD

-To eat all the specialties of the city, but eat the fried stuff in extreme moderation and go grilled/boiled whenever possible. Grilled shrimp, boiled crawfish, and raw oysters!

I ate a lot of fried stuff the first day, I won't lie, but I had a lot of grilled shrimp too. But yeah, I didn't do that great on this one. I went to one place and they weren't doing boiled crawfish at that time of day. Ah well. I did practice portion control and ate less than half the fried stuff on my plate.

GRADE: C+

-I'm relying on the fact that I haven't had more than two drinks in three months and it probably won't take very much to get me tipsy. So 4 drinks is going to be my max for the party and wedding.

I drank a lot during the vacation, especially Thursday night where I probably had 4 glasses of wine/champagne and various other cocktails. I DID share cocktails with my husband which cut down on my drinking quite a bit. I didn't drink much at the rehearsal dinner or wedding days, but yeah, I definitely went over my 4 drink max in New Orleans.

GRADE: C-

-I'm going to use the hotel's fitness center and pool in the mornings. Do the whole Riverwalk in NOLA and morning walks in Alabama.

OK, here's where I redeemed myself. I used the elliptical in the fitness center, walked tons every morning, and swam laps in the pools.

GRADE: A+

-I'm going to allow myself one "naughty" meal each day and be very conscious of when I am full. I have the SP iPhone app, and I'm going to use it.

I didn't have time to use the iPhone app but I did track my food and fitness and put it in the "nutrition note" section of the food tracker. I have to say that I did amazing on portion control on food. Not so much on drink.

GRADE: B+

-I'm packing good snacks -- almonds, mixed nuts, Luna bars, fruit leather, jellybeans, etc. -- for the car rides and snacks. Bringing my water bottle!

I probably ate the best when we were in transit (OK, except for our stop to Sonic on Sunday) but I made good use of the snacks driving to Mobile and headed back on the plane yesterday.

GRADE: B

-I'm going to enjoy my five-course meal at the five-star restaurant (anyone a Top Chef or Iron Chef fan? We're going to John Besh's restaurant) without guilt or reservation. Food is meant to be savored and enjoyed, and that's what I'm going to do!

OK, this restaurant was amazing, and I savored everything and enjoyed everyone's meal, and I think where I went right on this trip was portion control and I enjoyed everything without eating until I was stuffed and felt amazing after trying such an unbelievable meal!

GRADE: A

OVERALL GRADE: B

You know what, I did pretty well considering. A trip I'll never forget!

Sounds like you did really well...in fact you enjoyed yourself! Glad to hear the restaurant was amazing. Guy's restaurant, Johnny Garlic's in Windsor was amazing as well. The veggie lasagne was the best I have ever eaten. We actually ate there two times! We visited a candy shop called Powell's Sweet Shoppe that had over 4,000 types of candies and yes I did indulge. Sounds like you bahaved a little better than me, LOL! Glad to hear you had a great mini vacation in the Big Easy!

The NOLA Plan

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

I'm going to New Orleans in two days!!!
emoticon

Today was my official weigh-in day and Friday was me cheating and stepping on the scale when I wasn't supposed to. So I weighed in today not expecting a loss, and weighed in at 244.5, a 2.5 pound loss since Friday.
emoticon

Kinda shocked. That gives me an amazing buffer for New Orleans. Ideally, I'd love to maintain while I'm gone, but that might not be realistic. So if I come back and I'm back up to 247, I'll be okay with it, since I didn't expect to be this low anyways.

I found real comfort in this dailyspark entry showing me that I CAN eat healthy in New Orleans: www.dailyspark.com/blog.asp?post=a_n
ew_me_in_old_new_orleans
. And I'm going to do it, though I really feel like food and drink is a central part of the New Orleans experience and it'll be hard for a food addict like me to resist. Especially since the first night there is a joint bachelor/ette party! Then on Friday, we drive to Mobile, AL for the rehearsal dinner and wedding on Saturday. On Sunday, we're back to NOLA for a bayou tour and a five-star dinner.

I've made a new rule for myself in this SP journey. I'm going to make my calories count. So, it's not okay to blow calories on a Snickers bar, but a gourmet truffle... sure. No more packaged cookies, only homemade or bakery ones if I'm really craving it.

But here is my plan:

-To eat all the specialties of the city, but eat the fried stuff in extreme moderation and go grilled/boiled whenever possible. Grilled shrimp, boiled crawfish, and raw oysters!

-I'm relying on the fact that I haven't had more than two drinks in three months and it probably won't take very much to get me tipsy. So 4 drinks is going to be my max for the party and wedding.

-I'm going to allow myself one "naughty" meal each day and be very conscious of when I am full. I have the SP iPhone app, and I'm going to use it.

-I'm going to use the hotel's fitness center and pool in the mornings. Do the whole Riverwalk in NOLA and morning walks in Alabama.

-I'm going to enjoy my five-course meal at the five-star restaurant (anyone a Top Chef or Iron Chef fan? We're going to John Besh's restaurant) without guilt or reservation. Food is meant to be savored and enjoyed, and that's what I'm going to do!

I got a new iPhone, so I will be taking photos and hope to post them here!

I appreciate the fact that you have leveled with yourself and have realistic expectations for your trip (which I am completely envious of you for btw lol) but also remember that being healthy is a lifestyle change. You don't necessarily have to cut out the things you love, but learn to eat those things in moderation whilst continuing to exercise. Have a ball, you deserve it!! emoticon

Great planning! Have a great time. And remember if the scale is up when you come back: It takes 3500 calories to make a pound, so a good portion of it is likely water weight from the salt in the restaurant foods.

Have a wonderful time!! emoticon

I am so jealous I have always wanted to go to New Orleans. You have a very well thought out plan and I think the choices you made make a lot of sense. I may shock you with my next sentence as one of your Team Leaders but I totally agree with you. You can not go to New Orleans and enjoy the flavor and the life of New Orleans without partaking in the cuisine. I do not think you are going to go overboard but I feel that you are actually being very level headed about it. I say go to New Orleans, have a blast, enjoy, and when you come home work hard to work off any damage you may have done to your weight loss. You are still going to be working out and exercising so the damage if any may be minimal.

HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Super Suprising, Simply Stunning

Friday, September 11, 2009

I had today off because the software I use at work has been causing a lot of issues and they told us to take today off so they can troubleshoot. Which is good because I've been battling a head cold and sinus headaches, but bad in that I don't get paid for the time off.

My wonderful husband let me sleep in today instead of running around singing like he usually does (he's so cute), so I woke up at 9am (a luxury to me; I'm an early riser). Groggy, I dragged myself to the bathroom when I stubbed my toe on the scale that was in the hallway OUTSIDE the bathroom!

Some obscenities later, I realized my husband probably weighed himself in the bathroom, had not been happy with the results (he's been steadily going up as I've been dropping, alas) and moved it out in the hallway to get a better reading but neglected to move it back. Yeah, our scale is a bit wacky like that.

So I broke my rule. I had just weighed myself on Tuesday, but, in a grouchy mood, I figured what the heck. Let's see what three days off from exercise did to me. So I step on, bracing myself for being back in the 250s.

247.2. Huh? I move the scale back into the bathroom where the readings tend to be more cruel.

246.7.

I DID IT! I made my goal of being under 247 by race day in two weeks a mere three days after setting it. I'm no longer morbidly obese!

So today as promised, I made a charitable donation to a group that promotes healthy living and positive body image. I wish I could do more to pass on what I've learned here.

Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!

Still on a bit of a high from last week's great news! My husband is positively glowing with happiness, and it's just so good to see him so fulfilled. We started looking through real estate listings, and it's kinda neat to see that it's not just wishful thinking. That could be a reality very soon!

We spent another weekend at my family's house by the shore, and it's always sad to see another great summer come to an end. This weekend, my aunt motivated me to REALLY work it. I tried to convince her that she could be a runner if she wanted to, but she's not into it. Instead, she does these really amazing hard core power walks. And I got FOUR of them in during the weekend, along with a little running outside. So I figured I walked/ran about 25 miles during the weekend! That made me feel a little better about the margaritas, and yes, I was able to stay away from french fries all weekend, but not the barbecue chips!

I don't know if I overexerted myself, but by Monday night I got a massive head cold which sidelined me yesterday too. I'm feeling a bit better now though, but I think I'm going to wait til tomorrow to get back to C25K.

So I hit my "closer to 200 than 300" goal yesterday, and my reward was supposed to be a heart rate monitor, but now I'm thinking I'd rather get myself a new pair of running shoes and actually go into the shoe store and get the whole gait analysis thing on the treadmill. So hopefully I'll get to do that this week, maybe during lunchtime tomorrow or Friday.

My next goal is to hit 247 by race day, which would mean I will be an obese runner, but not a morbidly obese one. The 5K is two weeks from Saturday! And between that is my trip to New Orleans and Mobile where I'm going to enjoy every bit of my etouffee, thank you very much. I guess I'm just going to allow myself one "bad meal" every day. The drinking will probably be the big hurdle though. I hope I've made myself such a lightweight that I am able to get by on 2-3 drinks at the bachelorette party!

Good job on your healthy living during vacation! You can definitely say that the walking outweighed the margaritas! LOL

Can't wait for your race - I know you are going to just ROCK that thing!

As much as I adore my HRM, I do think a proper shoe fitting and new running shoes outranks it. :) Have fun!!!! :D I try to follow a vacation plan of two healthy meals and one free choice meal (meaning it can be healthy if I find something I love but I can eat whatever I want for that meal guilt free) so sounds very similar to what you're planning. :)

I bet you have made yourself a light weight. I gave up drinking pretty much all together but I have a couple glasses of wine for my birthday and I was smashed!

25 miles in one weekend? Incredible! Have fun on your vacations and enjoy your new running shoes!

Wowsa, Busy Woman!!! Congrats on the progress! You are smart to do the gait analysis. Also for the new shoes. Shoes are generally manufactured "for about a 150 lb woman," so we need to replace ours much more often! The gait analysis will show you what is right about your stride, and what you can work to correct to avoid hip and knee problems. You are just doing great!
