It's A Wonderful Run 5K - Pictures!

Sunday, December 09, 2012

My first 5k since the summer hip injury. The goal: Have fun and don't get hurt. Or so I said. My secret (now not-so-secret) goal was to be under 40 minutes. Slow, yes. But I just didn't want to believe that I had fallen too far behind last year.

I still don't know my finish time because I messed up my Garmin settings, but the first 3 miles took just over 36 minutes. So there's a chance I did ok. (I also clocked a weight loss since last week...bonus!)

The having fun part? DONE. GOT IT. IN THE BAG. This event is so much fun! It's part of the annual "It's a Wonderful Life" celebration in Seneca Falls, reportedly Frank Capra's inspiration for Bedford Falls in his movie of the same title. The Bailey girls come out to start the race, the movie plays everywhere, and you run past Gower's Pharmacy, the Bailey Building & Loan, and Hotel Clarence. Homes along the route are lit up, playing music, and peppered with cheering "Merry Christmas!"es by the townfolk.

Our crew, overdressed for the 50* weather in upstate NY! Santa hats get sweaty! We have jingle bells on our shoes too - next year I'll get a picture of those, because this is sure to be our new tradition!

Before we started, flocks of birds gave us a 5 minute show. This pic doesn't really do it justice though, sorry. But it was beautiful!

And we're off! The timing mat is on Bailey Bridge (from whence George prays and considers suicide, before jumping into the river to save Clarence the angel).

My BF runs about twice a year, and kicks our butt each time. Oh well, we're pain-free and having a good time!

Our friends brought the coolest post-race treat - the last of the season's watermelon! This is a variety called "moon & stars" and we all dug in!

Merry Christmas, Bedford Falls!

I was a little car sick on the way home (rare...weird), so my idea of having a glass of wine was replaced by chocolate milk when we stopped for dinner (scallops and mushrooms, 1/2 a baked potato for me).

Today I'm not the least bit sore, and I'm feeling energized and capable! Just what a fun run should do for ya'!!

PS - 12/10/12: Chip times are posted - 38:51.

It can happen to anyone - Safe Running Tale

This just happened. And it has a reasonably happy ending. But yes, it can happen to anyone anywhere.

I still believe that my 90-lb GSD is a pretty strong deterrent, but will make a point of adding my phone.

Wow. Thank you for sharing this article. It's a rude awakening and a reminder to keep attentive and stay safe. Unfortunately this is something that we should keep in mind. I find it very powerful and important that she finished her run. What a strong human being:)

Thank you for sharing, it is good to be reminded. I always run alone, and generally at the end of the day. I ALWAYS have my phone with me and try to stay aware of my surroundings but I am also hard of hearing and don't always hear someone coming up behind me. I echo what she says to do to prepare - take a self defense course. What she doesn't mention is to keep practicing the self-defense to keep it fresh in your mind and make it instinctive. Just taking the course won't help if you never practice what you learned...when you need it you won't remember.

Stay safe on your runs!

The best 6 doctors!

Monday, May 21, 2012

The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air
Exercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing
Your mind they'll ease
Your will they'll mend
And charge you not a shilling.

~Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields, What the River Knows, 1990

It's a Wonderful Run 5K

Saturday, December 10, 2011

I got stuck this week.

I had gained 3 pounds in the last 7 weeks, when my running went down from 20-mile weeks to 6-mile weeks, and I didn't change my eating for that! I was exhausted from work stress and not taking the time to a) work out more consistently and b) plan meals. So I churned along in the mud for a bit, not realizing it, until I got, well, stuck. This week I realized I couldn't get UNstuck without PUTTING THE VEHICLE BACK INTO GEAR, lol!!

So today I'm joining 1800 of my best strangers in the It's a Wonderful Run 5K. I signed up for it 2 months ago, to keep me running and have some holiday fun. And even though I've only run 1-2x/week lately, I'm still going, still having fun, and using it like chains to pull myself out of the mud!

All bodes well, because - check it out -- the FB profile photo for this Bedford-Falls/It's A Wonderful-Life-themed race is:

See the resemblance?

I love the way you are looking at it - being stuck and needing something to pull yourself out. I love the way you didn't throw in the towel! Good for you! That 5k and all the endorphins will definitely rev you up!

Hey Karen, I'm not sure how I got disconnected from you. I'm remedying that now!

Like you, I got a bit stuck this week, & for similar reasons. How great that you have just had a 5K to unstick you, & with such a promising name/image. emoticon Hope you had lots of fun!

I was starting to feel a twinge of envy, & then I remembered: silly me, I'm doing a 5K tomorrow myself! I'm going to walk to the adjoining town, where I need to return a library book. It's a 3.25-mile walk--actually a bit over 5K. I won't be running, but I'm definitely going to walk briskly & work up a good sweat. We'll see whether I turn around & walk home too, or take the L (elevated train).

Here's to a week of being stuck only to health & love & other good things!

Cancer Sucks 5K - A little friendly competition

Sunday, October 16, 2011

Mostly for fun, I signed up for a 5K Cancer Resource Center fundraiser. A friend is one of the organizers, and my teen daughter (fantastic gal that she is) volunteers for this event every year. This year I could actually PARTICIPATE instead of just taxi-ing her to the course. At the last minute, my BF jumped in too, and we all headed out together.

This was a pretty social event, with lots of costumes and signs and more fun than probably most people get to have when thinking about cancer. (CANCER SUCKS!) So we started it off with a little shuffle. I was a bit concerned about the BF because he thought his lack of running lately would be a detriment. We actually thought we'd be stopping to walk. Not so! Though this is his first 5K ever, he's generally pretty fit, and after the first 1/3rd mile we decided to actually give it a real shot and picked up the pace.

At mile 2, he was changing his stride to go easier on his knees, but it was a faster stride and I told him to go ahead. Off he went, and finished 22 seconds ahead of me, lol! So happy for him! And his burst ahead ended up being useful... ;)

I passed friends, we chatted, and at mile 2 I passed my daughter, who was working security at a park crossing. Her smile, and seeing her "at work", was pretty cool! BF was still in sight, and as I picked up my own pace, I kept thinking, "Come on, Karen, cancer is a LOT harder than this!"

In the last half mile, I caught up with a friend who was on the same fundraising team, and we remarked on how my BF had surprised us. He was in sight, and not really catchable, but I gave it a shot anyway! My friend said, "You go ahead - I'm not closing that gap." So I did.

Side note: That was HARD. But I was jazzed about it, so it was FUN too!

About 1 minute from the finish, I had closed much of the gap that was now my own competition, and as I came toward the finish line, my friend was right behind me, doing the same! LOL! She yelled, "Let's do this thing!" and burst forward. We finished in the same second. :)

No bling at this race, and the tshirts were for sale, not for free, because the popular vote is to have the organization spend the money where it's REALLY needed. (They had a big turnout, radio station support, and raised over $100K!) But I've gotta say that the feeling of crossing the timing mat is AWESOME!!!! I've only done it twice this month, but I'm addicted to THAT!

This run that started as a social jog became a PR, at 33:07. Not blistering, but 4 minutes better than my last one in July. Feeling pretty sweet!

Here's my friend, me, and BF celebrating at the pancake breakfast that followed.
