About Me

Friday, January 04, 2013

Ok, well, this isn't really about me, but it is my set of answers on a list that seemed like a fun thing to do while multitasking at work. So in my new effort to reconnect with the SP blogosphere, here we are:

A - Available or Married: Neither.

B - Book: Currently reading Game of Thrones, The Lost Ark, and Traitor To His Class.

C - Cake or Pie? I’d rather make a cake, but I’d rather eat pie.

D - Drink of Choice: Water, tea, red wine. Not necessarily in that order.

E - Essential Item: Air. No really … gotta start the day with fresh air or I’m completely sour.

F - Favorite Color: Forest green to soothe the soul. Cranberry red to celebrate. White to feel fresh.

G - Game to Play or Watch: Anything my daughter is doing.

H - Hometown: middle-of-nowhere-upstate-ny

I - Indulgence: Extra Sleep! I stink at taking naps, so when I can get extra sleep it’s just heavenly.

J - Job: Middle manager in software/professional services.

K - Kids and Names: 1- Karly Gael. And no those aren’t typos.

L - Life is incomplete without: Gratitude.

M - Music Group or Singer: Ohhh… I can’t possibly list, but I love happy music. None of that hateful stuff or “life sucks” stuff. Roots rock, classic rock, 80’s pop, soul, jazz, fun alternative, smooth r&b, giant orchestras, intimate trios, big band, Disney… bring on the happy! (This doesn’t mean I don’t also like blues, but I admit the selection is limited.)

N - Number of Siblings: 3

O - Oranges or Apples? Apples.

P - Phobias/ Fears – I don’t have any extreme “phobias,” though I do recoil at the sensation of wind in my face, even for a moment… it feels so suffocating.

Q - Favorite Quote: “Are you ready for the next great adventure?” sticks with me. “Do one thing every day that scares you.” And “There’s no cryin’ in baseball!” And ‘tis the season for, “Look now for glad and golden hours/Come swiftly on the wing;/Oh rest beside the weary road/And hear the angels sing!” Oh, that’s a song and not a quote? Whatever.

R - Reason to smile: Many. Aren’t I lucky? Gratefulness -> Joy.

S - Season: August.

T - Tattoos: None – I don’t feel strongly enough about anything that I want to wear it for the rest of my life.

U - Unknown fact about me? Most of them.

V - Vegetable you love: Almost anything fresh & crunchy

W - Worst habit: Nail biting. And being fairly distractable. Squirrel!

X - X-rays? The usual ones, with a few appendages thrown in for good measure.

Y - Your favorite food: Sushi

Z - Zodiac? Gemini. Hence my inability to provide a straight answer on most of these questions.

I wouldn't have been able to anticipate how you'd answer most of these questions, but now that I read your answers they sound just like you!

I think you're the only other person I know (besides me, I mean) who specifically names cranberry red as a favorite. It's so beautiful!

Happy new year!

I love this. So glad to know more about you. It also reminds me that I need to connect with the 'blogosphere.' Next month will be my third year with SP and I'm still fretting over my first blog emoticon

It's A Wonderful Run 5K - Pictures!

Sunday, December 09, 2012

My first 5k since the summer hip injury. The goal: Have fun and don't get hurt. Or so I said. My secret (now not-so-secret) goal was to be under 40 minutes. Slow, yes. But I just didn't want to believe that I had fallen too far behind last year.

I still don't know my finish time because I messed up my Garmin settings, but the first 3 miles took just over 36 minutes. So there's a chance I did ok. (I also clocked a weight loss since last week...bonus!)

The having fun part? DONE. GOT IT. IN THE BAG. This event is so much fun! It's part of the annual "It's a Wonderful Life" celebration in Seneca Falls, reportedly Frank Capra's inspiration for Bedford Falls in his movie of the same title. The Bailey girls come out to start the race, the movie plays everywhere, and you run past Gower's Pharmacy, the Bailey Building & Loan, and Hotel Clarence. Homes along the route are lit up, playing music, and peppered with cheering "Merry Christmas!"es by the townfolk.

Our crew, overdressed for the 50* weather in upstate NY! Santa hats get sweaty! We have jingle bells on our shoes too - next year I'll get a picture of those, because this is sure to be our new tradition!

Before we started, flocks of birds gave us a 5 minute show. This pic doesn't really do it justice though, sorry. But it was beautiful!

And we're off! The timing mat is on Bailey Bridge (from whence George prays and considers suicide, before jumping into the river to save Clarence the angel).

My BF runs about twice a year, and kicks our butt each time. Oh well, we're pain-free and having a good time!

Our friends brought the coolest post-race treat - the last of the season's watermelon! This is a variety called "moon & stars" and we all dug in!

Merry Christmas, Bedford Falls!

I was a little car sick on the way home (rare...weird), so my idea of having a glass of wine was replaced by chocolate milk when we stopped for dinner (scallops and mushrooms, 1/2 a baked potato for me).

Today I'm not the least bit sore, and I'm feeling energized and capable! Just what a fun run should do for ya'!!

PS - 12/10/12: Chip times are posted - 38:51.

It can happen to anyone - Safe Running Tale

This just happened. And it has a reasonably happy ending. But yes, it can happen to anyone anywhere.

I still believe that my 90-lb GSD is a pretty strong deterrent, but will make a point of adding my phone.

Wow. Thank you for sharing this article. It's a rude awakening and a reminder to keep attentive and stay safe. Unfortunately this is something that we should keep in mind. I find it very powerful and important that she finished her run. What a strong human being:)

Thank you for sharing, it is good to be reminded. I always run alone, and generally at the end of the day. I ALWAYS have my phone with me and try to stay aware of my surroundings but I am also hard of hearing and don't always hear someone coming up behind me. I echo what she says to do to prepare - take a self defense course. What she doesn't mention is to keep practicing the self-defense to keep it fresh in your mind and make it instinctive. Just taking the course won't help if you never practice what you learned...when you need it you won't remember.

Stay safe on your runs!

Today's Playlist Rocks!

Sunday, October 14, 2012

This list shattered the monotony of the track, and is indulgently fun! Effective, too -- time and form, all good. Energetic beats, crescendos that give a little push, attitude that makes you run tall, and fun that makes you feel powerful even while you're running past the local soccer team.

Pile this stuff into a list, hit Shuffle, and you’re off!

emoticon 50 Ways to Say Goodbye – Train
(Lovin’ this song since I caught up with it this weekend. Great beat, encouraging crescendos, and it’s funny!)

emoticon Some Nights – Fun

emoticon Blow Me (One Last Kiss) – Pink

emoticon I Cry – Flo Rida

emoticon Firework – Katy Perry

emoticon Must be Crazy for Me – Melissa Etheridge

emoticon She’s So Cold – The Rolling Stones

emoticon Stuck Like Glue – Sugarland

emoticon We Come Running – Youngblood Hawke

emoticon If You’re Going Through Hell – Rodney Atkins

I find music ssoooo inspirational! Have you heard the new one called "let's go"? I love the lyrics and it always seems to play just when I need an extra kick. I think it should be the SparkPeople theme song.

Enjoy your new list. :)

The best 6 doctors!

Monday, May 21, 2012

The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air
Exercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing
Your mind they'll ease
Your will they'll mend
And charge you not a shilling.

~Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields, What the River Knows, 1990
