On February first of this year, I dove into Sparkpeople. My nurse had recommended it as a resource for meal plans and tracking calories, but I've used it for so much more than that!
Yes, I used the calorie tracker, and still use it religiously. I love that Sparkpeople took my weight-loss goal and translated it into my caloric-intake goal. The first couple of weeks, I lied on my tracker, however. How silly is that?! Even if it was just rearanging when I ate things to seem more socially acceptable, what good did it do? I'm the only one who holds me accountable. Seeing the numbers and reports laid out in black and white, though, did teach me how to make better choices on most days.
At first, I scoffed at Sparkpoints. Who in their right mind would care about something so nebulous and silly? It turns out that I do! After about a month into the program, I found out that I was ranked 4th in my spark class; out of the over 15,000 people who joined spark the same week I did, I wasranked number 4 in Sparkpoints! Holy hamburger! I made it a goal to reach number 1, and I have since achieved that goal. :)
The biggest gifts that Sparkpeople has given me, however, are difficult to measure. I've made Sparkfriends who check in on me and support my efforts. I've gained an incredible amount of self-esteem and self-knowledge, first through reaching my fast break goals, and then by blogging and self-reflection. I've gained information on health and nutrition, the journey toward healthy living, and overall wellness from articles and blogs. Frankly, Sparkpeople has changed my life, and I can't wait to see what's around the next corner. THANK YOU SPARKPEOPLE AND SPARKFRIENDS!
