39 Steps - or 3,900?

So last night I followed my plan and went to step class. Much to my surprise it was yet another instructor. Just looking at her, early twenties, perky and brimming with energy, I thought "I have a bad feeling about this."

My intuition was correct - it turned out to be a killer class. She was a good instructor in the sense that she explained and demo'ed the moves, kept an eye out for people who were struggling with more complex steps and gave them 1:1 help. BUT this was still supposed to be a beginner level class, and the intensity was VERY high, plus it was a hot day and she gave us only one quick break. I think my aerobic endurance is pretty good, but I was starting to feel sick and had to tone it down for myself. It wasn't only me - fit-looking twenty-somethings were also struggling and taking extra breaks.

Modification to my plan: check out the posted schedule to find out who the instructors are; go to the class where I know I'm not going to die halfway through - at least for now.


Last 10 pounds - prepare for your demise!

Today my little fishie swam past the half-way mark on my ticker: 147 pounds. Down from an all-time high of 185 in May 2009. 10 more pounds and I'll be at a "healthy" BMI. I'm feeling pretty good already but it will be nice to lose a little more flab.

Today was my first of 5 sessions with a personal trainer - something else you wouldn't have caught me dead even contemplating five years ago. It was pretty good - the exercises seemed easy until she had me going on, and on, and on... I'm a little sore and shaky right now but not bad. I feel energized and looking forward to practicing these new exercises until my next session next Friday.

Stacey is very positive and encouraging - at one point she had me laughing because she complimented me on my breathing. That's what I do with the kids at karate, if I can't in all conscience praise them for anything else I can always say "good breathing".


I HATE change - well, some changes anyway.

Just heard today my favourite class at the gym will be canceled - it's called Centergy and is a mix of (mostly) yoga and (some) pilates. It will be replaced by Yogalates which is - yes, a mix of yoga and pilates. But my favourite instructor just told me she isn't qualified to teach that so she's leaving. I know I'll miss her!

A few weeks ago there was a "daily blog" (Coach Nicole's I think) that said we should try a new exercise or food at least three times before writing it off. At the time I declared quite emphatically that I had tried step class once and that was enough for me to know it was not my thing.

Well, today I got so bored and missing my regular karate classes I looked for something to do and decided what the hey, I'll try it one more time. Sooo... with a different instructor and slightly different routine, it was actually fun! There! I've said it!

Now my plan is to take the Tuesday class for the rest of August, and come September, when my Tuesdays will be busy with karate again, I'll give the Monday class another whirl. I'm hoping by then I'll be comfortable enough with it that I'll be able to keep up with the other instructor, even though I'm directionally challenged. (My daughter once suggested I should get tattoos on my hands with "left" and "right".)

And I will never doubt Coach Nicole again!

    Funny. A little crow is good for us sometimes.Step classes vary from instructor to instructor. I havent taken a step class in about 15 years , but when I was into it ( leg warmers and leotards OMG!!) I loved it. Now I am gravitating to ZUMBA. Anything to keep moving.

Every exercise or food does not please everyone but trying twice is a good thing, most would be once. I will try most things and there is very little I will not eat. I want to do things where people are friendly and if you need help others will pitch in. Good luck with your healthy eating, routine exercise in reaching your goals. May God watch over your always.
