Marley met a bear

Tuesday, August 03, 2010

We live in an area with lots of bears. But up until today I had never come across one. This morning Marley and I went for a long walk. Almost at the end, I spotted what I thought was another off-leash dog about 50m down the trail. It turned around and "Holy Batman, Robin!" if it wasn't a black bear. It looked us up and down and ambled off into the bush. Funny thing was, Marley didn't care. Come to think of it, the woods probably smell like bear all the time.

It was a bit concerning because this happened right next to our community centre; just a chain link fence separating the park and a swimming pool that was at the time (10am) full of kids. Obviously this bear is well used to humans and not afraid either. Unfortunately bears who are that comfortable around humans tend to be short lived. Sooner or later they'll get too close and that will be the end of them.

Other than that, being a bear would be pretty nice. Just think - you get to eat all you want all summer long; then, when you're completely stuffed, you go to sleep for a few months! You lose weight in your sleep, effortlessly. You give birth in your sleep, and when spring comes around, you wake up svelte, with a baby or two, and start eating all over again. I could handle that!

emoticonGlad you and Marley are ok! And, truthfully, a bear's life sounds pretty food to me, too!!! Imagine going to sleep after the Thanksgiving feast and waking up thin in the spring...aaahhhh!

Plateau busted!

Saturday, July 24, 2010

After stubbornly sitting at the same number for the past few weeks, this morning the scale started moving again - in the right direction! Plus, I've lost another centimeter off my waist and hips.

Patience and persistence pay off.

Not bad for an old lady...

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Yesterday I was teaching my karate class as my Sensei is away for work again. Since there were only a handful of students I decided to do a gentle jog around the dojo for warm-up. After 1 minute the other adult dropped out, followed quickly by her son and two other kids when we started skipping sideways. I couldn't believe it - I'm old enough to be their granny and they couldn't keep up with me! And I wasn't even going fast!

I emoticon samosas, but the boughten ones are usually deep-fried. Over the past week I've made three batches of baked samosas, one with chicken and two different vegetarian ones. Plus, my friend at work gave me a recipe for tamarind chutney which turned out really nice. I'm in samosa heaven!

Most Excellent Day

Thursday, July 15, 2010

I work an extended day so I get an extra day off every two weeks. Most of the time this day is filled with appointments, but today it was a REAL DAY OFF!!! I want to remember this excellent day. This is what I did:

- had my world famous muesli for breakfast
- picked fresh raspberries, lettuce and peas from my garden
- took the dog for a long walk
- went shopping for shoes and a purse - ended up getting two pairs of shoes and two purses
- had sushi for lunch
- bought a few more plants for my garden
- made a bunch of samosas
- spent another hour gardening (well, ok, I was pulling weeds but it looks so nice now)

And, I was eating healthy all day.
