We live in an area with lots of bears. But up until today I had never come across one. This morning Marley and I went for a long walk. Almost at the end, I spotted what I thought was another off-leash dog about 50m down the trail. It turned around and "Holy Batman, Robin!" if it wasn't a black bear. It looked us up and down and ambled off into the bush. Funny thing was, Marley didn't care. Come to think of it, the woods probably smell like bear all the time.
It was a bit concerning because this happened right next to our community centre; just a chain link fence separating the park and a swimming pool that was at the time (10am) full of kids. Obviously this bear is well used to humans and not afraid either. Unfortunately bears who are that comfortable around humans tend to be short lived. Sooner or later they'll get too close and that will be the end of them.
Other than that, being a bear would be pretty nice. Just think - you get to eat all you want all summer long; then, when you're completely stuffed, you go to sleep for a few months! You lose weight in your sleep, effortlessly. You give birth in your sleep, and when spring comes around, you wake up svelte, with a baby or two, and start eating all over again. I could handle that!
