A Real Treat

Saturday, May 01, 2010

Tonight we had a visitor, a martial artist with 30 years plus of training in a variety of styles. He happened to be in town and wanted to participate in the class. My sensei was out of town but he had told me to expect this man who had been HIS sensei. He followed along with the warm-up and stretching as best he could (he is recuperating from some serious health problems).

When we started our "basics" section, I could see he really wanted to get in there but he was being respectful to me and didn't say anything. I invited him up to the front and I'm so glad I did. He took over the class and shared generously of his skill and experience. The time went by so fast I was really sorry when it was over. As a special treat he performed kanku dai for us. Our 5 new white belts and the other kids were entranced by him. I can't wait for him to come again. We're really fortunate to have people of his caliber around.

Interesting Class

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

So last night was my chance to teach our 5 new white belts - their third karate class ever. In a way it was great as they're all eager to learn, but also stressful as they're a bit hyper and want to do everything at once. All in all though it was great fun and I'm looking forward to the next class on Friday.

I feel a bit sorry for some of the older students - some see this as an opportunity to hone their own skills by helping out with new students, but there are a few who resent the time I spent. O well, I've helped them a lot along the way, and it's not like I get paid.

Plus, weigh-in today, I've now reached the weight I was before my last course of prednisone. Woohoo, Happy Dance! Now onward to the weight I want to be.

Beautiful Sunday

Sunday, April 25, 2010

Southwestern BC is a lovely piece of earth but it does rain a lot. Well, duh, this IS a rainforest, even if we can't always see much forest. It was supposed to rain all weekend AND all week which is pretty depressing. On Friday I had to walk to the dojo because the car's on the fritz and I got good and wet on my way home, even though, like Wong Fei Hung, I always carry my umbrella. Plus it was frigging cold.

So this morning I got up to lovely sunshine! And it was pretty decent all day; not a drop of rain in sight. This gave me such a lift I was able to keep busy and stay away from boredom eating. The forecast has changed as well, and for tomorrow it's now supposed to be sunny and cloudy, NO RAIN! It's still supposed to rain on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but I'm optimistic that may change. Life's good!

I forgot to mention the cherry blossoms. In some places it's like a thick pink carpet. I do have to make sure that they don't clog the storm drain, but they are sure beautiful, and only for such a short time each year I might as well enjoy them.

Take this, weeds!

Saturday, April 10, 2010

After 14 years of fighting the weeds around our house I've finally got the perfect tool. I got it at Lee Valley and it's called a crack weeder. It took me two hours today to clean the curb; in previous years it took me at least two 4h sessions and it still wasn't very clean. Grass, plantain and dandelions are the worst but today's battle went to the good guys (dah dada dah dada - crash! - 1812 Overture).

I could save myself a lot of work by using weed killer but there are at least 5 ant colonies under the weeds and I think this stuff would hurt them. Ditto with using vinegar or boiling water. I don't want to kill the ants; this is between me and the weeds. Besides, doing it this way I burned up almost 400 calories - win/win!

Dental Surgery Today

Wednesday, April 07, 2010

Well, I'm glad that is over. My second dental surgery within two months. From the last time I know there will be NO exercise today but by the same token, also not a lot of food. And two glorious days off work. I've dropped by the grocery store on my way home to pick up suitable foods (soft and bland - ugh) and stopped at the library for a stack of mindless escapist books. "Lie down with your head elevated for the rest of the day" - think I can handle that. Scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes and spinach for dinner.
