Happy Anniversary, Kitty!

Monday, December 19, 2011

Yesterday it was exactly one year since we went out to the Abbotsford SPCA shelter and brought Rani back home with us. From being a sick, scared cat who would not come out from under the desk, she has become the uncontested ruler of the house. The dog defers to her and humans work hard to be good cat servants.

By and large she's satisfied with our efforts, except for that door thing. Cats don't see any need for doors, ever. Especially doors that lead outside should be open at all times. Failing that, one of us should stand beside the backdoor to open it whenever she wants. I suppose that will be her goal for the next year.

CHATTIEGIRL 12/31/2011 7:34PM

    Hi KARATE_KID;

I have had cats but now 2 dogs because cats get around your legs and I am afraid of falling. I love the cats we had and they where a mess. I had 2 stairways in my first house and at night they would run round and round, up and down so we had to close the back stairway door. Midnight and Silver, I have a picture of then sitting on the stairs each on a different step looking around at me. Love the animals and hate to see them hurt.
Stay healthy and happy and have a great New Year. God bless you always.

Smile Joyce

Sir Marley the Brave, Lord Protector

Thursday, December 15, 2011

Our dog Marley has never paid much attention to raccoons in our yard. In fact, he snored through both times that they raided the goldfish pond. (By the way, take note raccoons: the sushi bar is now closed - we dismantled the pond after the second raid).

One day last summer I was sitting at an open window and could hear the little rascals chattering away in the back yard. I went downstairs and nearly tripped over the dog snoozing on the landing, although the back door was wide open. Once I went into the yard, he suddenly woke up and got interested, and started barking and jumping around like an ijjit - it was a mom and baby on the back fence, scared half to death.

I guess that day it finally clicked with him that these creatures do not belong in our back yard. I can imagine the thought processes that went through his head: "Small, furry, sharp claws, humans like it and let it in the house - don't bark at or chase. Small, furry, sharp claws, humans yell at it when they see it and don't let it into the house, okay to bark at and chase."

Tonight after supper I let him out for one last pee. He is right on my heels and nearly knocks me over in his hurry to get out the door. I figure "Wow, he must need to go really badly!" Next he starts barking and races behind the shed where some commotion ensues. I get a bit worried because we still got bears around; guess they can't read calendars and don't know they're supposed to be asleep. He won't come, no matter how much I call him.

No choice, got to get shoes and go out to see what's going on. The racket wakes up hubby so he does the guy thing and goes out to check. Reports back - "It's a raccoon." That makes me feel a little better but not totally as I've heard horror stories about dogs tangling with raccoons. But now that hubby is there Marley finally decides to listen and comes running back into the house, tongue lolling and immensely pleased with himself. He sure showed them! And the cat is jealous because he gets all the praise for defending our yard.

Ouch!

Friday, November 25, 2011

So yesterday I got my flu shot. Then I went to my bootcamp class. After I was done my arm was aching like crazy (a gazillion push-ups right after you get a shot will do that) and I was generally a wreck because I had a very good but taxing core workout.

Today I wasn't feeling too bad, a little sore but in a good way. Then I went to my karate class and first of all Sensei thought it would be a jolly good idea to see how high we could all kick. I was surprised to realize that I can kick up to my head height but my groin feels like it will never be the same. After the main part of the class was done, he wanted to spar with me. I should mention he used to be a boxer. He can teach me a lot but it is a somewhat painful lesson.

Anyway, it's nothing a hot bath and a ton of ice can't fix. I'm sure I'll be able to walk soon again.

An anti-inflammatory will help too! Good for you, getting your flu shot and working that muscle helps the body absorb it better emoticon

Christmas Junkie

Sunday, November 20, 2011

Ok, I'll admit it. I'm a Christmas Junkie. There. I've said it.

As soon as the weather turns cold, I get the irresistible urge to go shopping (mostly on line these days), start craft projects and bake traditional German Christmas goodies. I'll restrain myself from decorating the house until the 1st Advent Sunday and I'm rejoicing when it comes early, like this year it's November 27th. I go to Christmas craft fairs and if possible take in any Christmas Markets in the vicinity. Last year I was in heaven because I actually was in Germany in early December, thanks to my mother's foresight to have a birthday in November. This year I'll be checking out the Vancouver Christmas Market.

I LOVE the special foods we only get on Christmas. Even though a lot of them are around all year now, I won't buy or make them until the Christmas season.

And I know every driver will curse me but I LOVE snow. I love the stillness it brings to the landscape (until rush hour starts) and how clean and bright it makes everything look. I love having a snowball fight and I love seeing the lake all frozen and my dog trying to walk on it with a goofy expression on his face ("The water is hard!" - sorry Walt Disney).

So now my secret is out. But I don't care. I'll be too busy knitting scarfs in Vancouver Canucks colours - this year they'll win the Stanley Cup for sure! And I'l be busy baking and decorating and sitting by the fireplace just enjoying the season. And any Scrooges out there can just go and jump in the lake - as long as the ice is thin enough!

I love snow, Christmas seems very materialistic and being in the stores will get me agitated but I love baking and enjoying my toes warming by the fire :)

Kindred spirits. I wonder if it's a Canadian thing.... I doubt it. :) We got to put up our tree last weekend (so it has been up for over a week) because DD was in from out of town and it was the perfect opportunity. She was thrilled. There were many laughs as it went up. As a result, we've been "all decked out" far earlier than usual, but I LOVE IT.

Not nuts about the snow, but we get a LOT more of it than you folks do....

New Kata

Saturday, October 22, 2011

Last night I learned Jutte, my 3rd black belt kata. Sensei is really keen on me learning them all quickly so we can practice together. He misses his son, who used to be his pracice partner, but who's now going to school halfway across the country. It's a little sad; we used to have a few black belts in the club but they've all drifted away - not sure why. Well, one family of 4 moved to Ontario; that was a big loss for the club.
Anyway, the reason Sensei needs a partner is because his memory isn't 100%. Of course we do have a lot of katas and the moves are sometimes very similar; t's easy to switch to a different kata halfway through. If he's relying on MY memory though he's in trouble :)
Fortunately this is the 21st century and not the 17th, so we're able to use technology to help us. We do have a DVD with all our katas performed by our previous Sensei. Last night I brought my laptop in and after all the kids had left we started working on the kata, going back and forth to doublecheck we were doing it right. The end result was quite recognizable.
Two more black belt katas to go!

Our kata are like that too, I've started one, inserted another midway and finished with the ending of a third! My limit is 1 every 2 weeks or so, or I jumble them all up. It's going to be interesting when I return next week, I have 10(or so) to re-learn.
