No turning back now

Tuesday, February 01, 2011

Yesterday my sensei ordered my black belt. It takes about a month as it has to be embroidered and then sewn together. So now it's starting to get serious. I'm doing well with my katas and with teaching a class but I've got to work a lot more on the weapons, especially sai. And I need to come up with some good kumite moves.

I don't know how I'll be going to sleep for the next 5 months!

Oh man I remember when my sensei told me I'd be testing for black belt. I spent an entire month practicing like crazy with another friend who was going to test. I was so nervous! Congratulations on getting this far and good luck!

Digging out of the dumps

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Last week was much better. I did a few fun things:

o Monday: Zumba. This time there was a smaller class, more instruction and a lot more fun.
o Tuesday: Sparring. There were only four of us so sensei had us doing teams, except at one point we forgot who our partners were and everybody went after sensei. Good thing he has a sense of humour!
o Wednesday: Group Power. Not a lot of laughs but felt good for the workout.
o Thursday: Rest day - played around with an SP recipe for chocolate cookies; shaved off a few calories and they are very good.
o Friday: Sensei is working on getting his nidan black belt. One of the things he needs to do is a bunkai for a kata of his choice. We took turns attacking him and filming the attacks so he can review them at home and see what needs to be improved. The kids got totally into it and there was a lot of laughter.
o Today: The scale is starting to move again - down 1 pound! I don't get hung up on the numbers but still - it's good to see progress in that department as well.

Perennials are starting to poke their heads up in my front yard.
When I drove hubby to work this morning, the sky was dark blue instead of pitch black.

Sick and tired of cruddy weather

Sunday, January 16, 2011

I've had it with this winter! We've had hardly any snow but day after day is cold, gloomy and wet. I feel like I'm living in Mordor. And the days are still so short!

It's really starting to affect my energy levels. Today I could only manage half my swim. My ears were hurting, my eyes were sore, and I had zero motivation. Then I went to the gym in the afternoon and again could only get through about half my workout. I could be coming down with something but I think it's just this ridiculous west coast weather. Enough already!

A little ray of hope: my tulips and crocuses are coming up.

Sometimes days like that happen. Hopefully you've perked back up since this!

I hope you are not comming down with something.
I agree this winter has been the worst for us... here in the South we are not use to long spells of cold.
take care

Next stop: the octagon?

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Yesterday we've started sparring again, after over a year without. In the Nisei style, it's possible to get up to Shodan without sparring, but it's still a useful exercise, and fun. I feel a little guilty for having so much fun hitting people, because normally my philosophy is more along the lines of "the greatest victory is the battle not fought" and so on. I also tend to get competitive and it's not really fair to the juniors - got to watch that!

One thing I can be really proud of and that's my aerobic endurance. The last time we got into sparring, I felt like I was going to die after even one 2-minute round. This time, with all the cardio I did over the last year, I was able to last much longer, even when Sensei did a special long bout with me at the end.

Of course I'm also fervently hoping this will help me bust the plateau I've been sitting on for far too long.

Sparring is such good cardio! And if it's different than what you've been doing, that should help with the plateau for sure. emoticon
