Week 31 of Pregnancy

Monday, March 03, 2014

I am in week 31 of my pregnancy and I have gained 22.5 pounds since I found out I was pregnant. In my last blog I had just found out I have gestational diabetes. Since then I have taken a class on how I needed to change my diet and workouts. I have stuck to a strict diet plan and have actually stopped gaining weight and even dropped a couple pounds. I test my blood sugar 4 times a day and test for ketones once a day. It's been a quite an eye opener. This makes me want to eat healthier long after I have my little boy. Having to constantly count my carb choices and remember to test my blood on time is a bit annoying but doable. The hard part is finding out which food choices work best for me. I have found that there's some foods I can technically have but my body doesn't react well to and causes my blood sugars to spike. I have gone back to walking on the treadmill about 30 minutes every day since its too cold to walk outside. In addition to the changes in my diet, I also need to see my doctor weekly instead of biweekly. I need to have additional ultrasounds done at 32 and 37 weeks. Which is weird. With my first pregnancy, it was pretty uneventful. Only had 1 ultrasound done at 20 weeks. With this pregnancy I will have had one done at 12, 20, 32 and 37 weeks. I only pray that the next 9 weeks go smoothly.

Sounds like it's quite an adjustment for you! But I believe the diabetes sorts itself out after baby is born. Only a few more weeks to go!

Week 29 of Pregnancy

Thursday, February 20, 2014

I am 29 and a half weeks pregnant. I have gained 24 pounds since the beginning of my pregnancy and today I found out I have gestational diabetes. I knew I had some of the high risk factors but I didn't believe I had it. I feel disappointed in myself. I feel like I failed myself and my baby because I can't get my eating under control. I'm taking a class next week to learn how much I need to change in my diet and exercise routine to be able to deliver a healthy baby.

I am determined to follow all the dietician's advice. After reading the initial healthy guidelines from the hospital my first thought was "This is going to be tough and a bit of a pain" but now... Maybe after a couple months of following a healthier plan, it'll become second nature. Diabetes runs on both sides of my family and after having gestational diabetes, my chances of being diagnosed with diabetes in the next 10 to 15 years increases. I believe everything happens for a reason. Maybe this is the kick in the butt I needed to get healthier. I know I needed to lose weight but it just became more real.

PS- To all my friends out there, I found out I'm having another boy!!

Congrats on another boy, and welcome to the "Mommies with all boys club." I've got three! So sorry to hear about the gestational diabetes. Remember that it is temporary, but a new baby's love is forever! I'll send extra thoughts and prayers to you as you begin this journey. I'm sure it is scary, but you've got this!

You can do your best...gestational diabetes can be caused by hormones, but a healthy
diet will be better for you and your baby!

Congratulations and emoticon,
Mara

Week 18 of Pregnancy

Tuesday, December 03, 2013

Well...I made it into my second trimester. I'm into week 18 and have gained 10 pounds. I have gained more then I would have liked but it's my own fault. My morning sickness has gone and my appetite is back! I have been eating more calories then the doctor recommended and still not always keeping to my minimum 30 minutes of exercise per day. But I had a thought the other day that helped to get me back on track. I just thought about about how horrible I would feel if I gained so much weight that it made the delivery harder or could cause any kind of health risk to my child. So I've been focusing on exercising and eating closer to my calorie guideline. I have been tracking daily and have been consuming more fruits, vegetables, protein and calcium. I'm going to take this one month at a time. This month I just want to focus on doing better then next month I can start to set some goals for myself.

I'm starting to get super excited! In 13 days I have my ultrasound and hopefully will find out if I'm having another boy or a girl. I can't wait!! No matter what...I know that Zach will be a great big brother. He's starting to look like such a little man. He's already 16 months and is running all over the house, investigating everything. Has to know how everything works.

Week 9 of Pregnancy

Monday, September 30, 2013

So far I'm in week 9 of my pregnancy. I've been extremely tired and have had morning sickness. Lately the only thing I can stand to eat is crackers so I tend to eat a lot of those. I have been working out but not always as much as I should. I have to make sure I workout in the morning or the afternoon because if I don't there is no way I have the energy at night. As of this morning I have gained 3.4 pounds since I have found out I was pregnant which I'm not happy about. This week I'm going to work on getting my minimum of 30 minutes of exercise in every day and focus on eating healthier foods then just crackers.

Sounds like you are doing just fine! It seems to me that my weight gain started around 9-10 weeks, and most of that weight is extra blood volume, water weight, etc. Remember, the scale will go up, but that doesn't mean you are not "losing weight." In the end, you very well may find that you end up lighter than when you started. The best thing you can do, is take care of yourself. Eat as best as you can, exercise as best as you can. I spent the better half of my first trimester eating carbs all the time! I couldn't bear to eat meat or veggies. I wanted bread and crackers! It will all level out soon. Just keep doing what you can! I'm here if you ever need to talk!

Sounds to me like you are doing all you can. I remember feeling that exact way and honestly I was sick the entire time I stopped throwing up at about week 28 but only gained 11 pounds the entire time. If all you can eat is cheese or crackers then eat that. There were so many days when it would kill me to even drink water. I am sure you know that as you already have a beautiful child.

Don't beat yourself up and take all the rest you can get because that little bean obviously wants you to sleep. Congrats on the new addition headed your way!

New Goal On Hold

Thursday, August 29, 2013

Well my new goal of losing 20 pounds before the new year has been put on hold. My husband and I just found out we're pregnant again!! We are so excited!!

I was not very healthy during my first pregnancy. Didn't always workout and ate out a lot. This pregnancy is going to be different. I want to continue with my workouts and I'm still going to track my food to help me to make healthy choices.

CONGRATULATIONS! It was almost a year ago I was in your shoes! It is so nice going through a pregnancy and being healthy. My 3rd pregnancy was by far my easiest, and recovery was the fastest. I still "lost weight" even though it looked like I was gaining it every week. If you ever need some support I am here. Great news for you and your family!
