The blind man for whom I've been the "Reader" for the past 7 weeks, is being laid off due to funding cuts. Therefore, I'm being re-assigned to a different work situation, actually for the same entity, and in the same office. They're saying my work has been excellent, so I'm not really hurting, other than there has been a lot of change lately. I guess I'm getting good experience. But I already do have good skills and experience, and I REALLY need to find a real job.

It's been a good 2 weeks, but extra busy, as I've started working at a new location. Last week I was trained by the man who's been doing the job for the past 15 months. This week I began working with the blind man I'm supporting. I'm officially his "reader," which means I read paperwork and make some decisions about data, then record the information onto an audio tape, and he then inputs it into a computer system. He also works with clients, and then he reports results to me. He has a steel-trap memory, and works very quickly. At present there are 140 clients in the caseload, and he knows what's going on with each and every one of them! Pretty impressive. I also use the computer to assist him with letters and forms that need to be completed and sent, and lots of filing. I'm only supposed to be there 18 hours a week, so my speed is going to have to improve. He's been very patient this week, so it's been a good start for me.

Forgot to report that on Wednesday morning I went to the dentist who is the only one here who is in my insurance group. Only actually saw him for about 5 minutes, and wasn't particularly impressed. However his assistant was VERY nice and very helpful. She did my x-rays and initial visit stuff. Then it turned out that they were also able to work me in for a cleaning - which I hadn't had in about 5 years since I hadn't had any insurance. She said it wasn't actually too bad, and she was able to take off some of the sharpness of the edges where that crown is missing. I do still have the crown, so maybe I'll try some denture adhesive or something, and see whether that works at all.

Am very excited about moving to a different training assignment. Where I've been for the past 8 weeks has been frustrating because the computer systems are so horribly outdated. The guy in charge of them is afraid to update for some reason, and the lack of security is scary. There hasn't been enough work to keep me busy, so I've been bored to death, and haven't really learned much while I've been here. Their business is helping people find jobs, so that aspect has been somewhat interesting. And the people here are super nice.
I have an interview at a different training site on Monday afternoon; and, assuming that goes well, they expect to start me there right away. I'd be supporting a blind man, so it should be more challenging as well as more interesting.

Had what I thought was a really good interview on Wednesday last week. I thought I was very well-qualified, and would be a really good fit for the position. But it turns out I took too long filling out their Employment Application after the interview, and that cost me the job. Today, back at my current position, I have been spectacularly bored and unproductive. They are busy orienting a new employee, so I've been staying out of the way; but I'm feeling somewhat neglected and unappreciated. Tomorrow will be a better day.
