A touch of "Cabin Fever"

Monday, December 29, 2008

Weather has been extreme for the past 10 days: 10" of snow, then freezing rain, now high winds. I have not been shopping due to saving gas and funds. I did apply for two local positions on line today, so that's a positive. And I have made a little progress at organizing my house. AND I did not gain weight over the holidays - yet ... .

That's great that you didn't gain weight! Good luck on your job hunting!

Rode the bike to a meeting today

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Rode the bike to a meeting today, and found a less-hilly way to get home again. Not a long ride, only about a mile each way; but it felt good.

Jon Hart was not tuned in on the newsletter contract for Partnership Park, and he seemed to think I should donate my work on the brochure. I want to talk with him about my situation because he seems very unsympathetic. He doesn't understand the financial pressures I'm facing because of losing my job more than 2 years ago.

I'm working at keeping myself surrounded by positive thoughts and attitudes and dispelling negativity while I figure out what I'm doing next. My knee with a limited range of motion is feeling a little better already. Got to accomplish applying for a job posting I found online. Too many hats: too many irons in the fire! Need to pull back from some volunteer stuff.

More on new bike!

Still have to take that photo - maybe this evening. I am wearing my helmet - no question about that! I've sat with patients in U of Mich hospital who have suffered brain damage because of not wearing a helmet. Their lives and their families' have been forever changed. I believe riding on the city streets is dangerous, but I'm doing it - just trying to avoid busy times of day, for one thing, and avoiding the busiest streets as much as possible. I live near downtown, so I usually only have to go a few blocks to get where I need to go. Our small city has been adding bike lanes on quite a few streets. As people turn more and more to this alternative transportation, bike lanes are important. We have to get off our oil gluttony! Our little planet and the future of the human race are dependent on it.

I'll have to take a photo to post. On Sunday, August 17, I purchased a brand new Schwinn "comfort style" Coronado bicycle with some money my daughters had given me for Mother's Day (yes, it took me that long). The color is seafoam green. The frame and wheels are aluminum, so it's pretty light weight. It has a slightly larger seat, and shock-absorbing seat post and front frame. There are 21 gears (I'm still figuring them out).

This is a really exciting event for me. Last night a man at our Fitness Council who rehabs bikes helped me with a few adjustments, and he explained the gears to me. Then this morning I rode my new bike to a meeting and to do errands.
