Avoiding a scale at home

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

So far this year I've lost 40 pounds without having a scale at home-- I mostly avoided buying one out of fear for becoming discouraged or obsessive, which has happened most times I've stayed at scale-owning relatives' houses for long periods of time. But as my doctor's appointments are becoming fewer and far-between, I think I'd benefit from a solid measure beyond loosening clothes.

I guess I'm asking what kind of healthy mindsets do people use when approaching scales at home to balance accountability with encouragement/discouragement, and for whom does the once-a-week weigh-in work?

How I got here

Sunday, May 26, 2013

Since this is my first day, it might be a good idea to have an introduction.. so here it goes!

My road to weight loss has been shaky-- I've tried yo-yo diets since I was about 10 years old, and while these were sometimes successful, I would always gain the pounds back. There was a point at the beginning of college when I gave up healthy eating in general despite warnings that I was prediabetic-- I lost self-control in the excitement of having my own means to eat whatever I want, whenever I wanted.
Surely enough, in early 2013 I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at the age of 20. At that point I weighed 340 lbs. With the help of a caring doctor, a loving support network, and new jobs that require physical activity every day, I'm down to 310 lbs and gaining energy in bounds. While I'm not stuck on a specific goal weight, I would like to break the obese threshold and work toward managing my diabetes without help from medication. I'm not completely averse to using medication, but I need to ease up on my liver from all of the pills that I am taking at the moment-- I have a fatty liver with elevated enzymes and would like to reverse the damage of my eating habits early on in my life.
At this moment, I'm feeling great that I have made such a stride toward my goals, but there is a long road ahead. Knowing myself, there are going to be peaks and valleys in my mood and motivation, but I think this change is gaining momentum. This really excites me.
