Feb. 24th. A special Birthday Wish!

Sunday, February 24, 2008

This is such a great day, the Sun is coming up bright, the temp. in the teens, and a very special person in our life is celebrating her birthday. It doesn't seem that long ago we were dealing with her boyfriend's bad habit of always showing up late for her date. She decided , with my help, to show him a lesson. I was instructed not to go to the door when he arrived his customary one-half to 1 hour late. It was so hard not to help the poor kid out as he went to every window in the house and banged and looked in. But we had a bond, and I kept it. We still have that same feeling today, sometimes you can't explain it, It's just there. What a special sister I have, a very Happy Birthday Ann. A footnote to the story. That young wide eyed kid turned out to be one the best BIL's a person could ever ask for. He also celebrated his birthday this week. They will be celebrating over 55 years of wedded bliss this coming Nov. I think it's going to last. What a great week! Skeeter

Sun. Feb. 17th.

Thought I would report on the way we celebrated our 50th. yesterday. We attended a wedding in Chicago that our DIL's only brother was married. She along with our 3+ year old curly blond haired GD was flower girl and 1+year old GS was ring bearer. The night before at rehearsal neither would walk down the aisle. We expected the worse and prayed for the best. Our prayers were answered, not only did they walk down but proceeded to turn on their best charm to the delight of everyone at the reception. All that in strange beds with very little sleep the night before. Aren't kid's the greatest?
What a difference 50 years makes. We had a 1:00 PM wedding at the church followed by cake, mints, nuts, punch, which little kids would drink too much of and get sick, and coffee in the church basement. We didn't throw the garter, I wouldn't dare touch her leg in church, that must have been started later. Pictures then followed. This all took to about 5. Back in my day, my kid's just love it when I lay this term on them, we were in a hurry to get to the Motel to sleep because we were all wore out from planning the wedding. We then proceeded to her parents home to change into the honeymoon attire. This is where it gets a little dicey. Our so called friends decided they should steel the bride. I can't imagine where they would come up with such a dirty trick. It might have something to do about revenge from their earlier weddings when the grooms car was stolen the week before the wedding and not returned until the wedding and some trashing of the new house of a bride and groom after coming home from there honeymoon, but who knows , I say get a sense of humor. Well getting back to our escape route we thought we had ditched them many times only to have them catch up with our car again. I finally found a town with many short streets and after taking a few wrong way streets we did ditch them. Oh what fun.
Back to yesterday, just beautiful the largest Church I have ever been in ,downtown Chicago, the front doors must have been 12 to 15 feet high, many stain glass windows and much much marble everyone. The reception held at another Ritzy place, valet parks your car, I knew then I wasn't at the local Red Roof Inn. Went inside to gorgeous dinning area. White covers over chairs, I told wife chairs must have been soiled, she said not with a frown, flowers everywhere, big dance floor, DJ with a large screen showing dancing and open bar. Had hors d'oeu -vres servers always come to you with trays full of goodies. Meal was fillet and shrimp. soup, breads ,twice baked potatoes, steamed broccoli and carrots, plus ice cream and an open desert bar. Two kinds of wine for the toast. Yes times are a changin.
It's always nice to see how the other half lives. It was a very nice way to celebrate our 50th. If you think I was going to weigh after that late night of parting your crazy. I weighed before I went yesterday and was down a couple of lbs. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Congratulations on your 50th to both you and your wife. Glad you had a great way to celebrate your anniversary. Thank for sharing your wedding with us too. We were married 28 yrs. on Christmas Eve. A small at home wedding, but it was beautiful with the Christmas lights and candles. Snow, rain, sleet and iceall in the course of the day. We were married at 9pm that night.

Congrats on your 50th! I think I would've liked your wedding better than the one you were at this weekend. I've been to weddings with a budget of $5,000, and I've been to weddings where the budget for the flowers at the reception was $5,000. The first is much more meaningful. I wish more couples would realize that before they spend their life savings on the wedding. The couple I know who spent $5,000 on their reception flowers wanted to go to Fiji for their honeymoon, but they ended up not going anywhere at all because they couldn't even afford the stamps for their thank you notes.
I have to comment on the flower girl and ring bearer situation too. I was maid of honor in my best friend's wedding, and the flower girl stood right in front of me. She spent the entire wedding ceremony twirling her flowers around, picking her nose, and at one point was even picking at the bride's dress. I didn't know whether to laugh or be mortified.

Congratulations on your 50th anniversary, Skeeter. That's a real achievement in today's world. I'd take it as a testimony to your character. And your wife's.

Feb. 13th. Valentine Alert!

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Just a reminder to all you guys out there not to forget to treat your honey with a gift tomorrow.
I already treated mine, I gave her an EKG today. Now before all you females get your nose out of joint and send me those nasty emails let me explain. Sometimes the best gifts are free, the Insurance Company paid for it, I look at it this way, at our age it might be a gift of life, what better gift could you ask for. And another thing, she gave me the identical gift of love. I think she is a real sweetheart, I know now she's a keeper! Happy Valentines day everyone. Skeeter

Well guess what , today is a better day. I don't know what happened yesterday with the scale but today I was back down to 180. It just might have been the cold weather, don't know. The important thing is my weight is were I thought it should be and it is going to be warmer today and snow.
Isn't life great, what a difference a day makes, I ought to write a song.

Whoa there horse, what hit me, the bad news first. I gained 3 lbs. this week. Just a reminder that this is a marathon not a sprint. I guess this means I can't eat a big handful of peanuts every night. It sure was fun trying.
The wind chill is terrible , not safe to be out, 4-right now at 10:00 AM.
As I type am listening to a church service on the radio, more bad news,I think the Preacher has a hangover, he is a guest pastor, my guess he won't be back.
As my 3 year old GS said when the dog's swishing tail knocked over a flower pot" what elsie can go wrong".
Our water to the washing machine is frozen again. I guess I will have to figure out how to wrap a heat tape behind it. Not much room behind there but since I lost weight I think I can reach down behind it now.
And another thing, our Sunday paper was not there after walking out to the road mailbox, what's the deal, they think it's too cold or something?
Back to the church ,singing way off key, why don't they cut their mike when they know they can't sing, is now into slurring his words doing sermon. Who knows, he might be like this normally.
How about some good news now it's only 6 weeks to spring. Tomorrow WILL be much better.

Skeeter, You hang in there, you have a wonderful way with words. Bet you keep your wife laughing all the time. My Father always said" Whoa there horsey, don't count your chicks before they hatch". So that brought back memories from growing up on the farm Thanks
I always say one day at a time on this weight problem.

Looks like you didn't have a great Sunday either! Good for you though for walking out to the mailbox. I think I've done that once since winter hit and it was a rare 35 degree day. It's almost a half mile round trip. Hooray for that good news though! Spring can't come soon enough for me although I'm facing a dilemma this year. Usually I like spring and can't wait for winter to be over, but it has sure been nice having my husband around more, so I'm torn on whether I want spring here or not.

man i'm glad we have not had the cold cold winter here in central va. maybe 1/2 doz. nights in low 20's and teens. just one night below 10. couple small ice storms. today we have winds 50 mph. with gusts to near 80 mph. i went and helped out in 911 call center . had all fire units out in the county. i think it was around 20 total brush fires started by downed power lines. roads blocked by fallen trees. still a lot of power off all over the state.
