What I have learned this time for 2013

Saturday, February 16, 2013

I was reading a blog by someone on the Insanity thread. They talked about their struggle with food tracking. I can relate. My food tracking was terrible because I wanted an exact calorie count for my meals. I would get frustrated if I couldn't find exactly what I needed. But then I realized I needed to focus on progress not perfection. I learned how junk food easily wiped out my daily calorie allotment. Now that I have been tracking for almost two months I pretty much know how I want to eat each day. If I feel like I am starving I go to my "free" foods by adding a large salad or putting more veggies on my plate. When I feel a sugar attack coming I include it with my count or make that day a cheat day. I don't try to fight it. I am far enough in my journey to know how to allow myself a cheat day and get right back on track. I don't focus on what I can't have because the knowledge I have gained about this new lifestyle is far better. I am learning how to make realistic choices without feeling like I am compromising. If I find myself in a slump I refocus by thinking about what I can control. Things like low cholesterol, no diabetes, a healthy heart and lungs, going up a flight of stairs without getting winded. These are not things I knew when I started this journey. I am not perfect and I don't have to be. Each day I make a healthy choice makes my goal of a healthier lifestyle inevitable.

I just recently started actually tracking my calories. I had convinced myself that ball park figures were ok but then realized I was cheating horribly. Great job and I hope you have a great week! emoticon

Good for you. I am the same way. I actually will add the food if I can't find the exact match. But, I am kind of anal like that :D

Third Half Marathon Results

Sunday, October 21, 2012

Today I completed my third half-marathon this year. It's funny to think that I was doing one 5K per year until last year when I took the leap (see 9/22/11 blog - First Half Marathon, Oh Yeah!). After that half-marathon my city held it's inaugural marathon that also included a half-marathon. Both times I walked. Not quire ready for running. After participating in the September 2012 half-marathon a friend suggested the Grand Rapids half-marathon when registration closed for the Detroit Free Press Marathon/Half. That was today. I was a little nervous doing two half-marathons within a month of each other. I took extra care of myself. I continued strength training and walked with a purpose. I did not do the regular training where I would kick out three miles per day. I walked throughout the day because I feared getting bored before the date and drop out at the last minute. Last Friday I had a sports massage where the masseuse helped me stretch my hip flexors, IT band, and glutes. Boy, did I feel good. On the day of the half-marathon (earlier today) I started my usual walk. I felt really good and decided to jog a part of each mile. What's funny is that my heart rate monitor would beep within a minute of me slowing down. The beeping was alerting me that my heart rate had dropped below the fat-burning range. Well, geez, I thought I needed to slow down. I was running from tree to tree. When I thought I did enough I stopped, but that blasted heart rate monitor started telling me I wasn't doing enough so I began jogging again. My goal was to finish in 3 1/2 hours. My clock time was 3:29:43 so I was fine with shaving 17 seconds off my PR. Then I checked the website results. My chip time was 3:24:39. I shaved off over 5 minutes! Yay me! I am becoming addicted to these half marathons and love that I am improving with each one because I learn so much about myself and how my body works. If this is something you have been contemplating I would suggest you to talk to your doctor then be like Nike and just do it. emoticon .

Mom made the commitment and surpassed my goal weight!

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Earlier this year, around February, my mom embarked on a mission to get healthier and lose weight. Her health insurance co-pay is based on her BMI. In other words, she pays a higher co-pay if she falls within the obese or overweight categories. However, if you fall within one of those categories they will pay for your membership in a weight loss program. My mom chose weight watchers. She also dusted off her lifetime membership to Vic Tanny aka Silhouette nka Fitness USA. How many of you remember Vic Tanny?

I don't know her actual goal weight other than to change her health status. I saw her at Thanksgiving when she told me she lost 50 lbs and was down to 170. I could tell she lost weight because her clothes were loose. I just saw her again on Sunday to celebrate Christmas. She announced that she is now 163.

This 5'5, 60+ lady surpassed my 5'9, 40+ weight loss goal. I was hungry no more. This happens when you have trouble lifting your jaw off the floor. While I am disappointed in my lack of progress with weight loss, I am really happy for my mother's success. This just goes to show how people can have the same amount of time and choose to use it differently. She went for her goal and mine will become part of my 2012 vision board.

Good for you mom. Thank you for showing me that age and time is all relative. What matters is your commitment to yourself.

You should be very proud of your mother, but you should be proud of yourself, too. I know how tempting it is, but comparing the absolute "pounds lost" or even "% body weight" lost doesn't necessarily provide a clear picture of progress. For example, one person could do a lot of cardio and no strength training, end up losing lots of muscle and fat, and end up with a slower metabolism. Another person who starts off with more muscle, or builds it through strength training, might lose fewer pounds but end up fitter, stronger and slimmer, and with a higher metabolic rate that allows her to eat more without losing weight. Or one person might be fighting a slow metabolism due to a thyroid or other condition and therefore every ounce lost might have required a lot more effort than another person had to exert to lose the same amount of weight.

First Half Marathon, Oh Yeah!

Thursday, September 22, 2011

Time to celebrate! On September 18, 2011, I walked my first half-marathon (Capital City River Run) without training. I wouldn't recommend doing this because you can seriously injure yourself. Yes, even if you're walking. I have walked 6 miles at a time before so I rationalized doing this by saying if I can walk six miles forward I can walk six miles back. How silly was that? But you know what, it worked! If nothing else, I am persistent and I talked myself in and out of doing the HM for more than six months. How silly was that? I knew I could walk more than three miles (5K) at a time, but was not sure I had the endurance to pull off 13 whole miles.

Why in the name of all that is good and right would they chose 13 miles as a goal?!? I understand that it is half of a marathon (26 miles). But why 26? Why not a nice even 25? (irony intended) But I digress. I am not a competitive walker, but they welcomed walkers as long as they can complete the course in 4:20. That's a 20 minute mile. I figured I could leisurely stroll my way across the finish line. I literally did it in 3:40. Yay me! I screwed up my time because I dropped my mp3 player and went back to find it. (Booo). Never did find it. (Double booo). But I finished it and am proud for getting out of my own way and just doing it.

Looking forward to improving my time in next year's race. Also plan to use duct tape to secure my replacement mp3 player.

She's back and March came in like a LION!

Saturday, March 05, 2011

Hey Fellow Sparkies,

Glad to be back after a long hiatus. Definitely missed you all because you have been my support system for over a year now. Anyway, this month is my birthday month and for me March roared like a lion. I hit up three Zumba classes this week with three different instructors. If you know anything about Zumba you know it's a Latin-inspired workout that has quite a few dance moves. But if you struggle with coordination and rhythm, don't let that discourage you - just go to the back of the class. I love to dance and I always go to the back of the class because I like to watch the instructor before a venture off and do my own thing. The point of the class is to MOVE!! Anyway, check out my stats for the three instructors. The classes are an hour long.

Instructor 1: Boogie Down Bob - burned 738 calories
Instructor 2: Becky the Beast - burned 514 calories
Instructor 3: Rockin Rhonda - burned 908 calories

Total calories burned 2160!

I did this so you can see that Zumba is entirely instructor-driven so if you don't like a class, I would encourage you to try a different instructor that is more your dance style. As you can see I burned the least amount with Becky, not because she is a bad instructor, but because she has a different rhythmic style. All three of these instructors have full classes so there are a lot of people that enjoy their styles.

If you haven't tried it I would encourage you to drop in on a class. The most I ever paid to drop in was $10. You will want to wear loose fitting clothes, a headband because you will sweat, and the least grippy gymshoes you have. They do a lot of twisting and turning so be nice to your knees and wear either dance shoes or gymshoes without a lot of traction. If you don't have either, just be sure to pivot on your toes.

The workout is awesome so go get your groove on! emoticon

Zumba is great and your calorie burn is tremendous. I don't burn as much but usually between 500 and 600 calories. Love it and do it about 6 times a week.
