2014 Monthly Weight Loss July Update (LATE)

Friday, July 11, 2014

If you read the last words of my previous blog, I did surprise myself. Unfortunately, not in a positive way. I gained some weight. I am back up to 358 lbs. It has been yet another tiring month with my wife home and out of work still from her car accident in May. She went in for an epidural. A last choice to help ease the pain. It really has not worked. She has her bad days and her good days. And as of right now is scheduled to go back to work in mid-August. But we will see about that as time passes.

I did go on vacation last month as planned. Along with my cousin we went to Atlantis in The Bahamas for 5 days. I've stayed in The Bahamas twice before but never at Atlantis. It was nice. We had issues when we first checked in because they gave us a room with a view of a roof which is clearly not a view of the ocean as we requested and paid for. Walking around the property was nice however it is very dirty and worn down and needs a serious makeover. The room was clean and very nice and updated though, so no problems there. On a bad note, the weather stunk! It rained everyday, and not just rain but thunderstorms. It was not fun. We did get out and do the lazy river, rapid river and one of the many water slides but we didn't get to do much of anything else. The last day we checked out was the nicest day, of course, and after leaving our luggage with the bell boy we headed out to the beach for the first time to lay out. We were able to do so for only 2 1/2 hours. And since we hadn't gotten any sun I decided not to put on sunblock. DUMB! I came home and had sun poisoning with blisters all over my body. And although she put sunblock on she had poisoning too. Go figure. At least I was able to go jetskiing one day. And I gambled each day too, but lost.

Emily finished second grade with all 4s on her report card. We also found out she was accepted in to TAG (Talented and Gifted program) for next year. We are so proud. Eric had his promotion Brunch in nursery school. But his progress report wasn't great. We need to work with him a lot before next September comes around.

My wife and I celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary and 17 years to the day we met. We were unable to celebrate much though as news of her grandmothers illness got worse. And a couple days later she passed away. We rented a truck and drove down to Orlando and stayed at a hotel for a few days before driving back up. All (11 including her Mom) her Aunts and Uncles were there and although the circumstances were not ideal it was nice to see everyone especially at the same time. I was able to purchase some fireworks on the side of the road on July 4th for the kids to enjoy... OK, and myself and the adults. Although the are illegal in Florida unless you tell the police officer they are for "Agricultural Purposes" meaning to keep birds away... LOL. Seriously, you can't make this up. The trip down took a little longer then expected but that's what happens when you have two small kids, one who has never driven that far before and also when it wasn't planned. I had been awake from 6:30am Wednesday to 1:30am Friday with not even a nap. On the way home I was up less time but I was soooo tired, even a powernap didn't help. And we stopped to visit some of my family on the way back which was real nice.

And that brings us to now I guess. I need to get back on track ASAP. And hope to do so soon.. probably not today as I ate some delicious bacon as I was typing this. LOL. But soon! I need to get the kids out and running around along with myself. Get on our bikes too. Not much planned for summer, just taking it one day at a time.

Take care and stay healthy

2014 Monthly Weight Loss June Update

Friday, June 06, 2014

{YAWN!} Oh, I'm sorry, excuse me. It's just been one very tiring month. As I mentioned in last months blog my wife was in a car accident. Well, it hasn't gotten much better. More doctors appointments, more MRI's, more pain prescriptions. I've been driving her all over the place. Waiting for hours here and there in the car as she is in physical therapy or in a medical supply office. After more then 4 weeks the doctor now told her to get a neck brace! The good thing, it helps her a lot. So some of the results of the MRI's are good, some still waiting. The good, her shoulder is not torn! The waiting, on Tuesday when I won't be able to comfort her she will find out the results of the MRI concerning her nerve damage. This is the biggest hurdle. All along the doctor has suggested it looks like she might need surgery but we will find out more this week.

Now, why will I not be able to be with her? I am finally getting away without the wife and kids and going to The Bahamas. I can't wait to get down there and go jetskiing and snorkeling. FYI, the wife is on a getaway herself right now for the same amount of time I will be. Both trips were planned and paid for before her accident.

I have finally finished cutting down the trees/bushes in my backyard. As well as digging up all the roots. It really opened things up more. Now I think I will take down yet another that I previously was going to leave up, still deciding though. And then I need to go and start tearing down an old, falling apart brick bar-be-que. A few people said I should rebuild it but I haven't made up my mind yet. I will try and save the bricks though.

The kids are doing great. Emily is nearing the end of 2nd grade. She is one of the smartest in her class. All 4 out of 4's on her latest report card. Eric is doing well too. Now that the nice weather is here they can start going outside more to play and get out of the house!

Now to my weight. As you've read it has been a hard month. Prior to the accident I joined a dietbet which ended a week and a half ago to give me more motivation. It kind of worked. I had never been more disciplined (even though it wasn't 100% the healthy way) and I made my weight and "won" my dietbet. The prize all the winners received was $54.21! Not bad. It cost $30 to enter and there is a $7.50 fee. So I still made over $30. I probably will enter another soon but not just yet. Since that weigh-in, things went back to the way they have been for the last month and even with my vacation beginning this Monday and the weigh-in itself this morning I failed. Yesterday was the worst day before a weigh-in by far I ever had. The decisions I made were the worst. I have no one to blame but myself. Stepping on the scale this morning I weighed 346 lbs. That's a loss of 8 lbs the last month. And a total of 69 lbs this year. Most people would love that. Most would say that is so good. For me, it's not. I know I can do better. I know I should have done better. This is the time of the year I can shine. And I will. Come July 6th I hope to surprise even myself!

Thanks for reading, leave a comment. Keep SParking!

Take care and stay healthy

    Mike,
Sorry, I read this last week, but on my phone, and it's so hard to comment from there if you want to write more than two sentences!
Sorry the weather wasn't the best for your vacation, but glad you got to get away and relax. You needed that, as did Kathy the week before. How were the results regarding the nerve damage?

As for your weight loss...yeah, you could do better. I've seen you do better. BUT, with everything you had going on you still managed to stay very strong and you still managed a loss. I have had a lot going on in my personal life and I have not handled it well...
So pat yourself on the back and just keep pushing forward my friend... emoticon

Glad to hear the kids are doing well. Go miss Emily! What a little scholar you have! I cannot believe she's done with 2nd grade. I remember when she started school!!

And as far as the backyard, wish I was closer, I'd love a project like that. I'd totally make you rebuild the BBQ, but I'd also help! emoticon

Take care and can't wait to see next month what all you have accomplished! Go you!

So much information - I love this blog! First off though can I request you be gentle to yourself? You are moving in the right direction and you are human. 8 lb loss is great for the month (as is 69 for the year) and I vote that you reward yourself a little. I hope that your wife is starting to heal and feel better - it can be difficult to recover from car accidents. Finally I am ecstatic to learn that you are headed to the Bahamas (and so jealous!!!) I love snorkeling and it will be a very relaxing vacation I think. You definitely deserve it after a hard month. Have a great time!

Make sure to take time for fitness on vacation. It's always easier in a new setting. Take a walk, run or swim... whatever you enjoy. Just take time for yourself and enjoy. Sounds like you had a crazy month, focus on yourself while you are gone. You will not regret it! emoticon

2014 Monthly Weight Loss May Update

Tuesday, May 06, 2014

Finally getting around to writing this blog today. It's been a hectic last couple days. Last Thursday, my wife got in to a car accident. She was rear ended as she was dead stopped in traffic. The car is totaled. She is home resting. She was really shook up. And has a bad case of whiplash and possibly a herniated disc. Lots of going here, doing this, doing that. Tomorrow have more appointments.

Prior to the accident the past month wasn't going well weight wise. I only lost 5lbs. Far less then I want to lose in one month. So as of now I have lose 61lbs this year. I'll keep SParking for sure and make it happen this coming month.

I joined my first dietbet challenge. It's a site that you can join a group and have 4 weeks to lose 4% of your weight. If you do, you win! So you get your money back, minus a fee and also a part of all the losers money. It's an incentive and fun.

The weather has finally turned to Spring! I've was able to get in the garage and clean it up and straighten it out. And I have cut down 5 more bushes we had in the back yard. I call them bushes... they are about 7-8 feet tall... I think they were spruce. All I know is they have needles that fall off every year and are a mess we don't want to deal with anymore. Also the neighborhood cats and other rodents don't have a place to hide anymore. :-) I have a master plan for my backyard and this is just a part of it. Next I have to dig up all the roots, that's the hard part.

I mentioned our Disney Cruise/WDW vacation for 2015 but I also booked a trip to Atlantis in The Bahamas for this June. I have stayed on the island twice but on Cable Beach. Looking forward to the warm temps, blue waters, palm trees and jet skiing! Just purchased some new luggage today too. The color is chocolate! Should be fairly easy to spot on the carousel at the airport. And also just planned to take a trip with the kids and my Mom upstate (New York) to see my sister this weekend. That will give my wife some nice peace and quiet time to rest as well. She'll enjoy the rest and not mind just seeing the kids for a little bit when we get home on Sunday night (Mother's Day).

It's May people! Get out and enjoy it. The sun is as high in the sky now as it is in July. These are the days where you can enjoy the long nights of daylight. Plenty of time do get lots done outdoors. Now I'm rambling on...

If I'm forgetting anything, I'll post later. I'm so tired. Goodnight. Keep SParking!

Take care and stay healthy

~Mike

p.s. Congrats and a big shoutout to my good SPark Friend Baker1009 for running and completing her first half marathon! So proud fo you. You kick a$$!

Aw, you made me tear up at the end there! Thanks for the special shout out, it means a lot. You were/are a big supporter of mine and I'll never be able to tell you how much that means to me Mike! THANK YOU!

So sorry to hear about Kathy's accident. Hope she is a little better each day. As a mom, I could appreciate a quiet weekend! I hope she enjoys that, and I hope you and your mom (and the kids) enjoy the trip this weekend.

The Bahamas again...so jealous! You deserve it though - I know how hard your job is!! Another incentive to keep pushing forward on your weight loss. emoticon on the 5lb loss!! I know it may not be as much as you were hoping for, but at least you were still able to lose!! That is a success, so make sure you pat yourself on the back!!

I love yard work, especially mowing grass, but am lacking a yard. Hopefully this is our last summer in an apartment and next year I'll have a yard to complain about, LOL!

Take care, have a great day! Safe travels this weekend!!
Hugs,
Beth

dietbet and digital scale drama

Monday, April 28, 2014

So I joined a dietbet which was start by Chris and Heidi Powell of Extreme Weight Loss on ABC. I have to lose 4% in 4 weeks to win some money. Wish I knew about it w while back because they have on where you need to lose 10% in 6 months... well I've already lost 14% in less then 4 months, so that would have been good for me.

Anyways, the rules have you taking a picture on the scale. In order to do this I had to move my digital scale. oops! And now I weigh 5lbs more. I hate digital scales. Thing is, my own personal weigh-in next week is now affected by this. Sucks to be me.

That is all, needed to vent. Ask more about the dietbet if you like. This specific 4% in 4 weeks starts Wednesday.

Take care and break your digital scales... I mean stay healthy

2014 Monthly Weight Loss April Update

Sunday, April 06, 2014

OMG! Is this cold ever going to stop. Now, although it is in to the 50s it still feels very cold, go figure. I need to begin on the yard work. So much to straighten up in the garage from Christmas decorations and last year stuff just every where. I will not complain about it being to hot this year, not once.

This past month I purchased a Fitbit. I have always been against pedometers of any type and this really is no different. It counts 100s of steps I know I haven't taken. Some positive things I do like about it though is the fact it confirms that I wake up way too many times during the night. And tells me how much total sleep I get. It also is used as a gauge to tell me how active I am each and every day. So I will still wear it and use it.

This last month I have continued on exercising on my stationary bike. I try and get on at least twice per week, I'd like to get on more but I'm just being honest. I have increased the workout, now up to step 5 which has more peaks and valleys over the 30 minute session.I also use light weights for my arms and shoulders. I hope to begin walking outside at night. A couple times around the block. I drove around the block in the car and it is exactly 1/4 mile, so I have my own track without going to a school or park. Looking forward to what the Fitbit has to say after a couple laps!

I also found out just the other day that my wife has booked a cruise for the family. Although without my knowledge (not to thrilled about that) and charging it all (even less thrilled). But the fact is, it's done. However, it is not for this year. It's for next year, next May to be exact. So, I'm going to let it blow over and accept it and not to stress anymore about it. It is also gives me another goal date. I mean, who wants to go on a cruise not looking their best? It's over a year away... this can be a very good thing.

The kids are good, wife is good. All had been sick at times the past month but nothing serious. We all can use some fresh air and sunshine. I don't see any major plans in our future over the next month. Just Spring Break and Easter. No plans during the break but maybe I'll come up with something.

Well, I guess that's it s... OH! Am I forgetting something? haha. Yes, the weigh-in. Well in the previous weigh-in I lost 16 and was hoping to do the same but I set a goal of 20. I didn't meet my goal. I made a couple bad choices this last week. I had chocolate birthday cake. I ate many many miniature Hershey's chocolates and a couple mini black & white cookies. But I did weigh-in and still lost 16lbs!!! I'm OK with that. So now I am down to 359lbs. For a total loss of 56lbs. I'll keep working and try to lose a similar number next month.

Today also marks my 5 year SparkVersary! I can't believe it's been 5 years. So happy I joined. Thanks to my good friend Stacy for introducing me to the site. And thanks to my SparkFriends who have supported me with kind words and comments throughout my journey. (((HUGS))) for you all. Keep SParking!

Take care and stay healthy

emoticon Another 16 lb loss is emoticon Mike! emoticon

I wish my husband had booked us a family cruise! He spent all of our money, but to the benefit of no one...not even himself in reality. Ugh.
Sorry...it's difficult none the less that she did that without talking to you first.
Glad everyone is healthy again!
Spring will be here soon...we just have to keep saying that and believing it. Right?!

As for your status...I'm not on here much over the weekends, but I was looking forward to your blog! Keep up the great work - it really is work, we all know that, and you're doing it!

Happy Sparkiversary! I'll hit 5 years this fall myself!

Thanks for being such an inspiration!
