Day 8 of travel

Friday, September 04, 2009

Ok folks. The executive decision has been made... I am officially removing September 4th from the calendar!! That way I don't have to admit to what I ate today!! Boy, I sure did enjoy the day!!!!!

Still having a great time here in upstate NY. We took a ride into the country today and saw the rolling hills, farms and huge rolls of hay in the fields. Their corn is still in season and the fields are full of their fronds blowing in the breezes. The weather is still just perfect with warm days and very cool nights. Love it!!

My daughter arrived up here from college today so it has been good catching up. Tomorrow my son drives in from Boston. We are going to the NY State Fair so there is a good possibility that we will remove tomorrow from the calendar, too!!

So..not sure if any of you know how very good fried haddock is? I can't get that at home. And imagine this...they have a shop here called the Karmel Korn Shop! I just won't tell you how good it is. Oh, yeah, and my sister made homemade pizza tonight (but we did have salad!). And daughter brought homemade banana bread that we had for dessert. Oh, my! The good news is I only had two small pieces of pizza. That helped compensate for the 4 cups of carmel corn, I am sure!

Well, we will see how tomorrow goes at the fair!

I'm still smiling.

Joyce

You have plenty of time to make-up, enjoy yourself. You sound like you are having a great time. I've never been to State Fair in upstate NY, I wonder if its any different from ours? May be I should put it on my 'bucket list'.

Day 7 of travel

Thursday, September 03, 2009

I can hardly believe that this is day 7 of my traveling! I haven't blogged the past 2 days because I have been so tired! Who said a vacation is relaxing!! lol I don't know where the time is going, we have been so busy.

Eating has gone well until yesterday when I went over 300 calories. We went the the Spaghetti Warehouse last night and as the name implies it is lot's of good food! I decided to have a freebie day and just enjoy, although my strategy was to eat LOT'S of salad with my dressing just drizzled on. It was just lettuce, tomato and onion so was pretty empty calories and I enjoy 3 bowls with a T of dressing on each bowl. The spaghetti, I cut off 1/3 of the serving when it came. I had them put the meat sauce in a side dish and ate about 1/2 cup sauce. And the toughest thing...that wonderful italian bread -- I only had one small piece with a smear of garlic butter. I was stuffed and happy!

Tomorrow my daughter (20) who is in college in NC is flying up to spend the holiday weekend with us. I am excited about having her join us!

More shopping today and then will be setting up Mom's old VCR to the new tv (she doesn't have cable). Hoping to make it work!

LOVING the weather in upstate NY. It was in the mid 70's yesterday and the nights are so nice and chilly that I had to close the bedroom window in the middle of the night! Great sleeping weather!!

You are doing great with your portion control! In a place like the spaghetti Warehouse that can't be easy! We had dinner at a friend's house the other nite, and I went 300 over also - and I really thought I was having small portions! But rich creamy sauces sure add it up!

It sounds like your vacation is going well. I am enjoying reading your blogs!

I drove through upstate NY long time ago and seem to remember rolling green hills and Dutch looking buildings... it was nice. I'm glad you are having a wonderful trip. You are doing great.

You went over your calories, but it still sounds like you did well in your selection and portion control. That's a big plus.

I probably would've eaten the whole plate of spaghetti! Yum! I love pasta.

Have a great time traveling and enjoy your holiday with your daughter!

Day 4 of travel

Monday, August 31, 2009

What beautiful country this is! Today I read a saying I love. "Flowers are natures way of smiling." I feel that way today. Looking across the street to my sisters house and seeing the sun hitting all of her beautiful garden flowers has given me such a feeling of peace. Today we saw the geese flying south and the starlings were making their racket in the fields as they are gathering for migration. It was another sunny day with a chill in the air at night. So upsate NY!

Things are still going well. We ate at Applebees and I chose the Italian Chicken and Portabella Mushroom Sandwich. I figured it would be a great choice and it came with a small bowl of fresh fruit. I just looked it up and it is rated at 360 calories. Mom got a sundae "shooter" - (yes, they put it in a very small glass) and I had one bite -- it was a great sweet treat ending for lunch!

Dinner was at IHOP -- I ordered the Senior Omelot and ate only 3/4 of it. And I had the best treat with the 2 buckwheat pancakes. I just dripped the syrup onto each bite to limit the amount I used (instead of letting them sit in it and soak it up). They were fantastic! Can you tell I was really craving some great comfort foods?? lol

With my very light breakfast my calories came to 1250 today. I am very happy with being able to make good choices when we are going out so much. I'd prefer more veggies, but I feel like I am having a treat while on vacation by not being so strict about that but still staying within my nutrition guidelines.

Tomorrw I will be spending the day with my sister - she has several things planned (of which I have no idea!). I know it will be fun.

Phew, I am tired!!

Sounds like you are doing real well on your trip. Good for you!!!
You would be surprised at how cool it is in Raleigh right now. Down in the 60's, gloomy and drizzly. Kind of nice to have the A/C off.
HAPPY TRAVELS, Carol

You are doing so Great! Eating out is really hard! My hubby gets disappointed when I don't want to go out to eat - he thinks he's doing me a favor! And he is - but it isn't always easy to find sensible stuff, and I don't do well with all the salt restaurants use. It sounds like you are having a ball with your family! I can't wait to hear the next installment!

Day 3 done - tired and happy

Sunday, August 30, 2009

Had a wonderful day! Reconnecting with family is so nice. It's been a year since I have been able to visit. The weather has turned snappy cool here in upstate NY and it reminds me of when I was a child and we would go to the Apple Farm in the fall and have fresh squeezed cider! I brought tank tops and shorts but doubt they will come out of my suitcase!! lol

The day went all too fast. We had a great dinner at my sister's tonight and she was so kind to make lot's of veggies! I have stayed well within my nutrition limits again today. No official walk today as we just ran out of time. I will be sure to walk tomorrow and may just plug in the IPOD and go on my own to try to put in some good time.

This officially catches me up on my days of travel. I didn't get yesterday's written until after midnight so I was running a day behind on my blog, but now I will try to make my entries in the evening so the timeline is more accurate.

More tomorrow...

It sounds like a wonderful time! Getting together with family is really special. I do so miss being able to get together with my folks. My Mom, Dad and StepMom have been gone for several years now. But the times we were able to get together were wonderful memories.

Glad you are having a wonderful time, it's great to catch up with family. I love it when I get to go see my parents, doesn't happen often with our schedules & living in different states so I try to make the most of it!

Day 2 of travel over...doing better

Sunday, August 30, 2009

Drove the final 210 miles today through some horrendous pea soup fog in Penn. I figured it I left the motel at 11 that would give it time to burn off. Nope... I had fog for the first hour of the drive, sometimes as limiting as 2 trucklengths of vision. But, overall it was a nice trip up. I took a couple of side trips through villages to break the monotony of 81. Again, thank goodness for the GPS because it allowed me to "wander' and enjoy the scenery and then would get me right back on track. How did we ever travel without this little wonder?

I did much better on food today, staying within my calories, carbs, fats and proteins. I was pleased with this because my family LOVES TO EAT and all of the meals are eaten at restaurants. Of course, we went to a nice little diner. I made good choices, though, and faired well today at 1255 calories!

And my sister and I went out for a walk at dark tonight. It was so nice and cool outside after the rain today. I really enjoyed that. We were out maybe only 20 minutes but it was a nice time to share and catch up. Then I went back to my Mom's where I am staying.

Off to bed (yes it IS after 1 a.m. --- Mom is a night owl and just gets going at midnight!! lol)...

Thanks for all the good words and support! It really, REALLY helps!!

Way to go on making good food choices. Diners can be dangerous. They usually have really good (not good for you) food. Enjoy your visit with family.
