A day "Off"

Sunday, September 26, 2010

I had SUCH a fun day yesterday.... and a fattening one! We went to the state fair... the home of elephant ears, corn dogs, cotton candy and funnel cakes! After a breakfast of Jack In the Box's grilled cheese sandwich (surprisingly around 350 calories... expected it to be much worse) on the drive, we made it to Yakima.

6 hours of watching my baby girl run from novelty to novelty, using new words (like Pumpkin!) for the first time, dancing to music, etc.... made my heart warm.

I had already given myself permission for a "day off from dieting". I bought margarita jelly bellies (my favorite) and shared them with Olivia. Surprisingly, I only ate a small handful.

Lunch was a hamburger patty on a bun LOADED with caramelized Walla Walla sweet onions. DECADENCE! Ridiculously delicious.

My biggest splurge was some ice cream. Yum.

Surprisingly, with permission to eat anything for dinner, I chose my usual turkey sandwich on a sandwich thin with a few green olives.

I ended the day about 600 calories over. And I don't really feel bad about it. I had a special day with my family. I was MINDFUL about everything I ate, and it was all a choice. It wasn't just a mindless binge. It was a decision to take a day without worrying about every food choice and trying to find something "healthy" in a sea of deep fryers . And today is back to program.

It feels surprisingly GOOD to know that I can take a "day off" without throwing away all my hard work. Losing weight is not an "all or nothing" project. I think that this knowledge is good for me.... I have thrown away weeks and months of hard work and weight loss in the past because "I screwed up" and then threw it away. That led to decades of yo-yo dieting.

If this is more about learning to make better choices and leading a healthier life style, then this lesson was vital for me. I'm happy I had my day off. :)

Thanks for reading, and comments are always appreciated. Hope you have a wonderful Sunday full of blessings!

I'm glad you enjoyed your day. It sounded fun. You have a great attitude. Being flexible with yourself is perfect. We all need the occasional indulgence. I had some fresh home-made baklava. It was so good. Every healthy lifestyle has the occasional naughty snack in it.

I am so happy to hear when someone plans for a day "off". I like the fact that this is not a diet plan but it is a life plan and days like yesterday are part of your life. I am glad you enjoyed it and had fun without guilt. emoticon

Crazy, fun, full day

Sunday, September 19, 2010

What a day! Got up this morning and went to some yard sales with my hubby and daughter. Then went to the Sausage Festival (a fundraiser for a local church). We played games with my daughter and got huge sausage dogs. Home for a bit, then off to Olive Garden for Mom's Night Out with friends.

I had some huge splurges today, and still somehow came in with 15 calories to spare! :)

While I ate more than I probably should have, I realized that I would have done much, much worse 2 months ago. This morning I brought a fiber one bar and 20 ounces of water for breakfast. A few months ago, it would have been a sausage McMuffing with egg and hashbrowns from Mcd's.

Lunch was a sausage dog on a hoagie roll at the festival. Two months ago I would have followed it up with a funnel cake with all the toppings!

Dinner was a garden fare entree with minestrone soup and one breadstick at Olive garden. I splurged on a berry margarita. Two months ago I would have had countless breadsticks with a side of alfredo sauce, salad with lots of dressing, chicken alfredo, and the lemon cream pie. Yes, seriously.

And you know the crazy thing??? The Apricot chicken was DELICIOUS for under 500 calories. Truely delish! And I didn't feel deprived at all. I laughed and ate and had fun with my friends. It was a great day!

Dr's diagnosis....

Friday, September 17, 2010

So with the encouragement of my spark friends (and husband once I told him what was going on), I went to the Doctor this afternoon. EKG was essentially normal other than a very low heart rate. Sitting BP was 105/70.. a little low. The doctor was unable to find any murmur in my heart. However, during orthostatic blood pressures, he noted that my reclining bp was 82/57... WAY too low.

Blood work has been drawn, urine given. But he basically has diagnosed SIAHD. In essence.... I'm drinking too much water, and causing my body to dump it's sodium and potassium which I need. I've been drinking between 100-120 oz of water daily. I am now limited to 80 oz per day. I am also to INCREASE my sodium intake significantly. And when I get dizzy, the instructions are to lick my finger, dip it in salt, and eat it. LOL.... pretty screwed up and backwards if you ask me!

We reviewed my caloric intake, when and what I'm eating, and he was very encouraging and said I'm "doing everything right". Apparently this syndrome does not happen in everyone, but can be relatively severe in some people.

So we have a plan and a diagnosis. Blood work will be back on Monday to confirm it and check for anemia and a few other things.

Thanks for the encouragement and support!

I an so glad you went to the Doctor, I am proud of you taking your health seriously as opposed just to dropping pounds.
I also have low blood pressure my normal is 90/68 and I am anemic so I get my Hubby to give me B-complex and B-12 shots once or twice a week depending on how I feel.
Yes if you drink to much water it can do more harm than good. Good catch on the Docs part. I am glad he is pleased with your diet and I am sure the tests will come back with something you need to tweak, like vitamins and such. Good for you staying on top of the situation.
Wishing good test results, so now maybe you can have a good restful night. Take care. Sandy emoticon

I have heard it is possible to overdo it on the water consumption. I'm glad he was able to pinpoint the problem so easily. Hopefully the blood tests will all come back fine. I'm glad you went in and can now get to feeling better!

I also have 20 point drop in my b/p when I go from lying, sitting to standing. I don't drink that much water though. My cardiologist did decrease my bp medication and that has help some.

A little scared

Thursday, September 16, 2010

I'm havng some minor health symptoms that are kind of scaring me. I have a complex medical history and am just frightened of more surgeries or scary diagnosis.

I haven't mentioned any of it to my husband because I'm afraid that he will blame my dieting. I've been getting dizzy and lightheaded. Last night I got up quickly and my BP must have dropped rapidly. I got lightheaded and "tingly" all thru my trunk and arms. I've been having some irregular heartbeats which frightens me. I've only had cardiac trouble during my pregnancy 2 years ago.

I'm drinking plenty of water. Eating tons of protein. Good complex carbs. My calories are between 1600-1800 most days.

Just worried. Don't feel safe walking or working out for fear of passing out. I know I need to see a doctor.... just trying to put it off.

Worried worried worried.

9/17/10 update: Spoke with the nurse extensively. Due to my history of cardiac issues and pernicious anemia, I'm scheduled with a Dr for an hour appt this afternoon. My parents are coming to watch Livy... NO WAY I can get an EKG done with a 2 year old running around!

Thanks for all the comments and concern!

I guess by now you realize that the concensus is to go see your doctor. It could be something serious or not. I had years back (before, way before SP) dizzy spells. Just out of the blue I'd get dizzy. Went to my GP and couldn't find anything wrong. Had blood tests (numerous) done, even a CAT scan done. Nothing! I was worried sick as I continued to get dizzy for no apparent reason. After a year of back and forth, I had enough. If the doctors couldn't find out anything anatomically wrong, then it must be something that I am doing to myself. So I started eliminating some food I normally used on a daily basis. First was the artificial sweeteners - no change. Then the dairy products - no change. Then the coffee - Bingo! It turned out that I was ODing on caffeine. When my doc asked me if I was drinking too much coffee, I replied that I didn't think so; two cups a day was the norm. Well, he should have asked me if I liked chocolate, chocolate cake or chocolate cookies! Ta da!

I not saying that this is the problem with you. I'm saying go see your doc and find out once and for all. If it's serious, waiting longer may just aggravate things. If not... Take care! : )

Go to the Doc!!! I don't think it is your diet. Could be something else causing it though. . . .

Go to your doctor.. and, let us know how it goes. I totally can understand why you wouldn't want to tell your husband ... I sometimes get that way myself .. I just don't want him to blame my diet if something isn't going right.

Listen to your body.. and, if it's saying something is wrong.. have it checked out. Please!

Hey I think you should not be putting it off and yes you dont want to worry Jim, but i also dont think it is your diet...but i think you should tell him then when you see your primary re-affirm your diet and tweak it here and there if need be that way he wont be as worried that it is that...Focus on you and your health, but i suggest not keeping him in the dark.. I'm worried about you!!!!

Sandy is right. Those kinds of symptoms are definitely not ones you want to put on the back burner and hope they will go away! While I'm not one for keeping things from our spouses, if you really don't want to worry him, just make an appointment with your primary and tell him it's because you just don't feel well. Once you find out what's going on, THEN fill in the details. Keep us posted on how things go and what you find out. Will be praying for you that it is something very minor that can taken care of easily!

Thanks, Sandy. I have a good primary Dr and a cardiologist that saw me while I was pregnant. I'll start with my primary Dr. I have a history of severe anemia and probably just need some blood work and iron. When I was pregnant my anemia was so bad that I had weekly iron infusions at the hospital for 7 weeks. Sucked!

It is time to see a doctor, I would not put it off if I were you. No I do not think it is your diet because your getting plenty of calories.
I would suggest not exercising until you see the doctor. I would not want you to worry your Hubby but do tell him he needs to know so you can get the medical help you need.
I am not trying to scare you by no means just use caution without your health you have nothing.
Take it easy and do get in to see your Doctor, it could be nothing or it could be a food allergy I have problems when I eat gluten products I get fast heart beats and dizzy headed and nose bleeds.
So it could be a number of things but don't worry that causes stress, go get the answer from your Doctor.
A concerned friend.
