My 3 year old LOVES to help me in the kitchen. And I have to admit that we have spent a lot of fun Mommy/Daughter time in the kitchen baking up some treat or another. Usually easy, high calorie, yummy treats.
Since I have returned to a road towards health, I have been cooking at home A LOT more, but have done zero baking. And there are few cooking tasks that I'm comfortable with her helping with (plus I do most of my cooking in the crock pot). But yesterday I found a task to do with her that was healthy and FUN for her! It was such a reassuring feeling that I can have fun with her while still teaching her about health and teaching her positive lessons.
I had her help me measure grapes into serving sizes to put into the freezer. She loved it!
I have today off for President's Day. I'm happy to have today with my little one (Hubby has to work). We're heading to the gym in a while, then our day is a mystery... we will see what it holds!

What a nice evening! My husband is out on a "man-date" with his best friend. Since his friend lives over an hour away, they don't get to hang out often, and made a day of it with a guy movie, lunch, and a hockey game. This meant that mommy got lots of one-on-one time with the little one today!
This morning we all hit the gym, and then just hung out at home. But after hubby left, I put the little one down for a nap, then crawled into my own bed with an electric blanket to read a book on my Kindle... yeah.... I woke up almost 2 hours later. A nap! I needed that!
Since she accidentally got an extra-long nap, I decided that it might be fun to go to Mcdonalds for dinner and let her run around. I invited my parents (who live across the street) to join us. Livy was THRILLED with her first happy meal in almost 2 months, as well as the undivided attention of mommy, Grandma, and Grandpa! And the 2 HOURS of running and climbing was great for her.... and hopefully pooped her out!
I planned my meal ahead of time (a grilled chicken sandwich with tomato and BBQ sauce and a side salad with light balsamic vinaigrette) and really enjoyed my time chatting with my parents. We all even got small ice cream cones. At 150 calories, that's pretty guilt free.
Today was a pretty good day! I needed it after the stress of this week. I wish the scale would move, but I know I'm making good choices and they will show in the long run.

That's my day. My daughter had her second ever dental exam and I was stunned to learn that she has 3 cavities! That's one for each year of her life!!!
And this was added to the lovely surprise this morning that our heater wasn't working. After trying a few simple fixes with no results, we called in a repair guy. Turns out that the electrical board in the attic surged... THANK GOD we didn't have a fire last night!!! $430 later, and the heater is fixed.
It just seems like every time I turn around there is a new stressor. I'm doing my best, but I'm completely overwhelmed. I took a rest day from the gym today (heading back again in the morning), and am 500 calories below my range as of nearly 8 pm. Guess that's better than having over-eaten in response to the stress, right?
Either way.... just trying to get by, make good choices each day, and live my life. Some days that is tougher than other days.

I've been struggling today. Work was tough and stressful. I'm worried about a particular client (I'm a mental health social worker). My daughter was up for a couple hours last night screaming about nothing in particular, leaving me drained and tired tired today. It's V-day, and while my hubby gave me a card and Amazon gift card (for more kindle books) last night, the lack of V-day love today made me sad. And I keep seeing pictures of candy and decadent chocolates EVERYWHERE! On my facebook wall, in client's homes, on tv.... boo to that nonsense.
I am DIEING for a box of chocolates. Not A chocolate. A BOX of chocolates. I'd love to stuff this uncomfortable "blah" feeling down with about 2,000 meaningless calories so I don't have to feel it anymore. Instead, I settled for 100 calories worth of tootsie rolls and one Hershey's Kiss (gleaned from my daughter's v-day party goodies).
Today was a great lesson in CHOICES vs MOTIVATION. I was motivated to eat a box of chocolate. I made a choice to go to the gym, eat sensibly, and stay in my calorie range. I'm sure tomorrow I'll be happy with that. Right now I just feel blah.

For Christmas, I received a few gift cards for Old Navy, and promptly ordered a couple new pieces of clothes... including a very pretty work shirt. That is now too big on me. The funny thing is that my order arrived on January 3rd... the same day that I joined the gym. It was a tiny big that day, but looked pretty good. 18 pounds later and it's too big. So, tonight, rather than air drying it like usual, I threw it in the dryer in hopes that it will shrink some. That makes me laugh!
Also.... a few lessons from the past few days.....
1) You can eat out and fit it into your calories with some easy pre-restaurant research! On Saturday, we went to PF Changs. I had carefully arranged my day to accommodate my meal (including working out an extra 15 minutes). And I actually managed to stay just inside my calorie range. BUT! I ate too much and ended up getting sick (common with the surgeries I've had).
Tonight we went to Applebees. Again, I checked out their nutrition info online, knew my calories, and ended my day well within my range. AND I didn't eat too much. Just right.
2) I'm capable of harder work outs when I put my mind to it. Two years ago I tried to walk a 5K, and wasn't able to finish. I've regretted that ever since. Saturday I did 3.51 miles on the elliptical. I'm well on my way to being able to do a 5K in the Fall.
3) Even very young children absorb every. single. lesson. we. model. Every one. Don't fool yourself.
My 3 year old happily accompanies us to the gym often, and loves the kid's club. This weekend I asked her if she wanted to help me in the kitchen. Her response? "Yes! Let's make some healthy food options!!!!" Even at 3, she gets that we have had a shift in our house.
So.... in the words of my 3 year old... "Make some healthy food options!"
