Accentuate the Positive. Eliminate the Negative.

Accentuate the Positive. Eliminate the Negative. Don't mess with Mister In Between.

The song from which these words were lifted was popular in the 1940's but they are still appropriate today. Our most important attribute is our attitude for it is you attitude and not your aptitude that determines your altitude. I don't know who said that first but almost every self-help author or speakers uses it in some form.

To be successful, have a Positive Mental Attitude and surround yourself with people who have a similar attitude. Your altitude will take care of itself.

"You've Got to Please Yourself"

Saturday, January 23, 2010

"The surest route to failure is to try to please everybody" Bill Cosby

In the late '60, Rick Nelson released a song called "Garden Party" which chronicled his adventures at a concert when he realized that the audience wanted to hear the singer that he was and not the singer that he had become. The refrain went "You can't please everybody, so you'd better please yourself".

It is impossible to please everybody because everybody wants you to be something different. It is the old proverb that you cannot be all things to all people. Of all the people you meet along your journey through Spaceship earth, only one of them will accompany you throughout the trip and that is you! Therefore, he only person whose approval you need is your own. Dennis Waitley says we should ask ourselves whether we have grown up to be the person the child we were thought we should become.

"You can't please everybody, so you'd better please yourself"

Listen More Than You Talk

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Nature gave us one tongue and two ears so we could hear twice as much as we speak.

- Epictetus, philosopher

A good corollary to this statement is that it is better to remain quiet and have people think you are a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

    Hahahaha John,
I never knew who said that, but I used to use it all the time in my group that I taught in prison. I was the teacher and yet almost everyone of those guys wanted to argue with me instead of listen. I used to tell them to listen to everything and "If it don't apply, let it fly!" because if they didn't, they would never know if it applied to them or not. Lori

A friend hears the song in my heart and sings it to me when my memory fails

"A friend hears the song in my heart and sings it to me when my memory fails"
Pioneer Girls Leaders' Handbook

Perhaps our most cherished possession is our friends. in "It's a Wonderful Life", Clarence autographs the book he leaves George Bailey "No man is a failure if he has friends".

Most people make the mistake of failing to utilize their friends. Notice I said "utilize" and not "use". Friends will help you over the rough spots and enjoy the high points along with you. Alcoholics Anonymous works on a system where each member has a sponser and when they encounter a rough place in the road, they call their sponser who comes over and helps them weather the storm. You friends will be willing to do this for you, if only you ask!

Someone said, "To have a friend, be a friend". When a friend asks you for help over a rough spot, gladly give that help and then when you need assistence, look to this friend for companionship through the storm.

A friend hears the song in my heart and sings it to me when my memory fails

Terriffic Tuesday!

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

The workday morning has started and nothing bad has happened! That's a start, especially when you job requires that you deal with bad stuff by definition.

When my gym closed, we all transferred our memberships to a new gym which is a nicer facility but the classes start a half an hour earlier. It took some getting used to but we have adjusted. The earlier start means we get to the office earlier so we can get in another half hour of work (or of newspaper reading).

The weather is turning to our first spring. It is supposed to go into the upper 60's this afternoon so it will almost be shirtsleeve weather. Atlanta has three or four winters every year. They each last 3-5 days and are followed by a mini-spring. Real spring gets here in early April and then winter takes one last stab at us with a late April cold snap before giving way to a short spring and summer.

Nothing pressing is on today's calendar so it will be a day of catching up. I'll be able to leave early and stop by the evening gym for a bit of cardio, or maybe just a walk through the local park since it is springtime.
