I went to a seminar this week on uncluttering the holidays. Perhaps the best advice to come out of the session was to "plan backwards". While the presentation was holiday based, this technique will work year round to make you life run easier.
Keeping in the holiday mindset, suppose you need to send a holiday present to a person who lives in California. You would like it to arrive on December 22 at the latest to allow for the Post Office to mess up and deliver it late, giving them two days lee way. This means you either have to pay a king's ransom to send it express mail or have it shipped by the 17th. To ship on the seventeenth, it should be packed and wrapped by the evening of the 16th. Since you tend to procrastinate with packing and wrapping, you should have purchased it by the 14th. Shopping never goes quite a smoothly as planned, the store is out of the item, you have to go to another store, it is at a different mall, it is backordered and will be in in three or four days. You should start shopping on the 9th or 10th. Since these are work days and you cannot take off, you better get to the mall today and buy that present or it will never get to California on time!
