Just because you are broke doesn't mean you are poor.

Friday, October 02, 2009

I've never been poor, only broke.
Being poor is a frame of mind.
Being broke is only a temporary situation.

While we were raising our six kids on one income, I tried my best to make them feel that they could have anything they were willing to work for. Interestingly, they vary greatly in how they perceive those years. The older two remember me as fulltime mom who had little ones at home and made homemade meals, clothes, etc. They were in college when I went back to work full-time. The younger kids were 11, 13, 15 and 17. Those kids remember a household with two incomes and more money where they were expected to fix dinner because I also had night classes two days a week. I remember the stay at home years as my rich years when I had time for my family.

You are so right. I was brought up in a poor household and I never realized it until I was grown.
My mother was widowed at 45 years old with 7 childen. She was the most fantastic person and made do with what we had.
We were poor but, I never felt broke.

With the economy being the way it is, I believe this quote applies to many households.

You have the time!

Thursday, October 01, 2009

Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.

Yes, we do have the time. We just have to make time to do what we need to do. I read this in my local paper this morning.

Ask "Why Not?"

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

Robert Kennedy used to quote T.S. Elliot in saying "Some men see things as they are and ask 'why'? I dream of things that never were and ask 'why not?'"

So it should be with our lives. There are a lot of things in our lives that could exist but don't for no good reason. Look at these things and ask "why not?" if you cannot come up with a good answer, make it happen!

Never Look Back!

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Make it a rule of life never to regret and never to look back. Regret is an appalling waste of energy; you can't build on it, it's only good for wallowing in.

Walk Somewhere!

Monday, September 28, 2009

Sometimes you need a goal, even if it is fictitious. In the summer of 2000, I set a goal to walk to Washington, DC in time for the Inauguration of the new president on January 20, 2001. I kept track of my walking on the treadmill and recorded my mileage and when I walked the streets, I recorded the mileage. A simple Excel spreadsheet kept track and sure enough, by January 5, 2001, I had logged the necessary 750 miles. This gave a sense of accomplishment.

Pick a place to walk to. Pick a time frame to walk there. Establish an average miles per day and get started. You can even go on-line and see what is happening in the place you have walked to along the way.
