Once the game is over, the King and the Pawn go back in the same box.

Once the game is over, the King and the Pawn go back in the same box.
Italian Proverb

This seems a bit obscure until you think about it. Nothing in this world has any power over our lives until we give it power. The king and the Pawn are cut from the same block of wood, painted with the same paint and shipped in the same box. It is only when we take the pieces out of the box and arrange them on the chess board that the King and the Pawn have different ranks. So it is with the external forces that effect our lives.

Why should you feel gloomy when it is raining. In the movie "oh God", George Burns, as God, said, "If I hadn't created rain you wouldn't appreciate sunshine." Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about dancing in the rain (See Friday's blog by the same title" Shakespeare said "What's in a name? Would not a rose by any other name smell so sweet?"

Do not give events power over you. Face the complications and move past the.

"Life's not about waiting for the storm to pass...It's about learning to dance in the rain!"

"Life's not about waiting for the storm to pass...It's about learning to dance in the rain!"
-Vivian Greene

The storm will always pass but why wait? If you wait for the storm to pass, you are wasting time. Kids are a lot smarter than we are. It is never raining to a kid. Wayne Dyer tells the story of the family's going to the beach in the late spring or early summer when the weather is not quite hot yet and the water hasn't warmed up. He says to look around. The parents are all bundled up on the beach as far from the water as they can get. the kids have no concept of cold. All they know is that this is the beach. It is here. It is now. And...they may not get back to the beach for a long time so the kids, in various stages of undress play on the beach and frolic in the water. the parents can be heard muttering "look at those crazy kids, don't they know it's cold." If they could stop playing for long enough, the ones with the right outlook, the kids, would probably say "look at those crazy adults, don't they know this is the beach?!

In the good book it says it is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness. Rain and darkness are going to happen. Do not despair. Both of these phenomenon are temporary. Light a candle, even if it is only a small candle on a birthday cake. Dance in the rain, even if you can only do a simple box step. Do not let the rain or the dark prevent you from living your life to its absolute fullest.

It's all a matter of perspective. Sometimes we need to squint, cock our head or take the time for a really good look to see the opportunities.

Be careful how you walk!

Thursday, August 06, 2009

You must be careful how you walk and where you go, for there are those following you who will set their feet where yours are set.

- Robert E. Lee, Civil War General

General Lee's advise is more profound than it seems at first blush. This maxim applies to all of our lives. Whatever you are doing, someone impressionable is watching. Maybe it's your children maybe its your co-workers. Life cannot be "do as I say and not as I do" I can't remember who said it but it is worth remembering "You actions are making so much noise that I can't hear what you are saying". By their actions, so will you know them.

You cannot tell your children to eat a balance diet when they are watching you pile up empty calories, fats and other unhealthy items. When you lay on the couch and tell your children to go outside and play, they are moke likely to go outside and lie down!

When I was elected president of the local Jaycee club, one of the past presidents took me aside and said I would have a great year as long as I didn't ask the club members to do anything I wouldn't do myself. This was great advice and I still try to follow it thirty years later.

So, Be careful how you walk!

When my boys were younger we would buckle them in their car seats. My oldest son would ask, "Why doesn't daddy have to buckle up?" From that day on I would buckle my seat belt. It's true what they say,"Good examples have twice the value of good advice."

Life isn't Fair, but it's Good!

Wednesday, August 05, 2009

My cousin sent me a list of forty-five points yesterday afternoon. I have reprinted the list at the end of this blog.

Point number one was "Life isn't fair but it's good." This is something we all have to bear in mind at all times. Sometimes, it not only isn't good but actually sucks!.. So what? Big deal! We have all heard "this too shall pass" and it always does. No matter how bleak things appear, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, the sun will come up tomorrow (Annie), Tomorrow is another day (Scarlet O'Hara) I guess I could go on with the truisms all morning but bear in mind that you can endure whatever you face even if that means putting up with it until it goes away rather than "conquering" it.

Look at the challenges and pick out the most distasteful one and face it. If you have to eat two frogs, eat the big one first (Mark Twain) then the little one is easy. Face the distasteful challenges first and the remainder of the day will be easy.

And now for the 45 points:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick.
Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

5. Pay off your credit cards every month.

6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone..

8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck..

10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile

11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their
journey is all about.

14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God
never blinks.

16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

But the second one is up to you and no one else.

20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no
for an answer.

21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie.
Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.

22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.

23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

24. The most important sex organ is the brain.

25 No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will
this matter?'

27 Always choose life.

28. Forgive everyone everything.

29. What other people think of you is none of your business.

30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.

31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

33. Believe in miracles.

34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did
or didn't do.

35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.

36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

37. Your children get only one childhood.

38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.

40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd
grab ours back.

41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

42. The best is yet to come.

43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

44. Yield.

45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.
