Be as you wish to seem!

Thursday, July 09, 2009

Ideas just hang around for so long! The quotation is from Socrates. (Pronounced "So-crates" for you fans of Wyld Stallion music" San Diemas High School Football Rules!)

More recently, the modern self-help writer urges "Act as if". These ideas are identical. If you act as though what =you want to happen has happened, people will come to regard you as though it has actually happened and the event will happen.

I had a classmate in law school. The first time we took the bar exam, he came dressed in jeans, a golf shirt and sandals, pretty much like everyone else. The next time the bar exam came around, I was serving as a proctor and this classmate was taking the exam again. This time he was decked out in a three piece suit. When questioned on his attire because he stood out from the rest of the examinees, he announced, when you look good you do good. It wouldn't be much of a story if he failed the exam that time too but he didn't, he passed and has been a practicing attorney for the past 35 years.

I believe I credited Epictitus with saying "Nothing is but that thinking makes it so". That's sort of an inside out way of saying the same thing.

Your thoughts become your actions, your actions become your habits and your habits become your character.

Jimmy Buffet advises that changes in latitude cause changes in attitude. This is true but it leaves off the corollary that changes in attitude cause changes in altitude. It is practically impossible to reach beyond your realistic goals but it is possible to fall short of them. Set your goals, see yourself as having achieved them and act. Remember: "The you you see is the you you'll be!"

Be as you wish to seem!

Think and grow slim!

Wednesday, July 08, 2009

The common thread running through all of the self-help authors is that your mind controls what happens to you. What you are is determined by what you think.

Ask any hundred people in the world what the most powerful nation in the world is and they will usually respond first with their own, then United States, Russia, China, or where ever. In fact they are all wrong. The most powerful nation in the world is imagination!

It might have been Epictitus who said "Nothing is but that thinking makes it so" Since there are very few people around who actually knew Epictitus, I will go ahead and attribute the statement to him.

In the 1930's Napoleon Hill wrote a book called "Think and Grow Rich". This is an extremely powerful book and recommend it to everybody as a must read. In that book, Hill cites example after example of people who believed in what would happen and sure enough it did happen. This idea continues.

W. Clement Stone: "Success comes to those who try and keep trying with Positive Mental Attitude"

Zig Ziglar: "Get a check-up from the neck up and don't be a victim of stinkin' thinkin'"

Walt Disney: "Think, Believe, Dream and Dare!"

Marcus Aurelius: "What the mind of man can conceive and believe, he can achieve!"

Believe you can achieve your goal and you will. There is no force so strong as an idea whose time has come (Panasonic quoting Thomas Edison)

Think and grow slim!

Dance in the Rain!

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

"Don't wait for the storm to end. Learn to dance in the rain!" There is little advice better than this. Like the bumper sticker says, Stuff Happens.

There is going to be bad stuff in your life. Get over it!

You simply cannot wait for everything to be right. Imagine a train which has to travel from New York to Los Angeles. If the engineer waited until all of the switches were in the right position and there were no other trains on the track, he would never leave New York. instead, he leaves New York, confident that when he reaches each switch, it will be in the proper position and that the oncoming trains will be directed to a siding or a parallel track to allow him to pass.

Right now, the economy stinks! (That is probably an understatement) So should we stop all activities until the economy rebounds? NO! We have to make corrections and accommodations. Maybe we cannot afford the European vacation this year. Should we sit at home and mope about not being able to go to Europe? NO! There are a lot of vacation opportunities close to home. it is amazing how many people have not visited the attractions in their home town but have traveled hundreds or thousands of miles to visit similar attractions. Hotels are currently offering attractive rates because business travel is down and they need to fill the rooms. Maybe the hotel will not give you a preferred rate. OK. You have two choices. Either speak to the manager and see if he will negotiate or try a different hotel.

Mark Victor Hansen in "The Aladdin Factor" tells us we can have anything we want if we will only ask for it. If you ask for something and don't get it, you have either asked the wrong person or you have asked in the wrong manner. Ask again or ask someone else or do both.

In the movie "O God", George Burns, playing the part of God says "I created the rain so you'd appreciate the sunshine." Rain is a good thing. It helps plants grow. It fills lakes. It washes away dirt and grime. Most importantly, it helps us appreciate the sunshine.

Dance in the Rain!

Be yourself, no one can do it for you!

Monday, July 06, 2009

The title comes from the Talmud. Similar ideas have come from a myriad of sources but the Talmud is perhaps the oldest incidence of the idea.

Shakespeare says "To thineownself be true and it follows therefore, as surely as the night the day thou canst not be untrue to any man"

The quote for the day today is attributed to Bill Cosby "I don't know what the formula for success is, but the formula for failure is to try to satisfy everybody".

Two more recent quotes are "If it's to be it's up to me" and "The me I see is the me I'll be"

All of these platitudes reiterate the same thing. If you are in control of yourself, you are in control of your fate. Nothing is but that thinking makes it so. James Allen wrote an essay based on the Bible verse "As a Man Thinketh in his heart so shall be be".

Assess you situation. Ask the hard questions. How did I get here? Where am I going? Am I happy with where my life is heading? Where would I like to be going? What can I do to get there? Remember the simplistic definition of insanity is to keep doing things the way you have been doing them and expecting different results.

In "Garden Party", Ricky Nelson repeats the refrain "You can't please everybody so you've got to please yourself"

Be yourself, no one can do it for you!

Embrace today!

Sunday, July 05, 2009

The Sanskrit tells us yesterday is a memory and tomorrow is but a dream but today, well lived will make every yesterday a happy memory and every tomorrow a dream of hope.

Today is all we have so make the most of it. The current weather is overcast and it is supposed to rain. So? We need the rain, it's cheaper than running the sprinklers and it is a forced break from the outdoor activities that have occupied the past several days. Sometimes we just need to kick back and reflect on what has been happening and recharge as we prepare for tomorrow.

Whatever today brings, embrace it. Live each day to its fullest without burning yourself out trying to pack just too much into the twenty-four hours available.

Embrace today!

I agree 100% with you. To have a grateful heart and an optimistic attitude makes life so much sweeter. Thank you for sharing that. Have a wonderful day! emoticon
