Talk to Yourself!

Sunday, August 02, 2009

Some people think that people who talk to themselves are a little bit crazy. In fact the opposite is true!

When you talk to yourself your are sure of two things. First, the listener is actually listening to what you say and second, the speaker and the listener are communicating on the same level!

Self talk is an essential element in any successful endeavor. Emile Coue' had his patients look at themselves in the mirror each morning and repeat one hundred times "Day by day in every way I am getting better and better" Coue' had extraordinary results.

I have often observed that while there is no scientific proof that positive thinking works, there is mountains of proof that negative thinking will defeat any endeavor. Remember the Little Engine That Could. He kept repeating "I think I can, I think I can" and soon he was saying "I knew I could"

Observe what you goals are and what has to happen to achieve these goals. Set up intermediate goals and then "Act as if" Talk to yourself as though those goals have been achieved. pretty soon, the time will come when those goals have in fact been achieved and you are ready to advance to the next one.

Remember, when you talk to yourself, you have a captive audience as the speaker and a private listening session as the listener. Take advantage of this. Talk to yourself often and say good stuff.

I agree. You need to listen to the words that come out of your mouth. "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks."

    John,
I really like your blog about self-talk. I've used positive self-talk and visualization for many years in my professional life. For some reason, I didn't extend the powerful benefits of those tools into my personal life and my weight/fitness struggles. (I think you helped me turn a lightbulb on over my head. I was abused as a child and learned very early that I "didn't deserve" true happiness. I guess that was the misguided notion that blocked me from thinking I deserved to be happy and healthy, and from using tools I knew worked in other areas to help me get there.) Thank you so much for that.

Make it a great day!

Blogs Benefit the Blogger

Saturday, August 01, 2009

There are a lot of people in the world. Only a small percentage of them bother to read anybody's blog. The person who gets the most benefit from a blog is the blogger!

If you post a blog on a certain subject, before you can begin to put down your ideas, you have to stop and think about them and get a clearer picture of both the idea and your view on on it. As you are putting your words down in hyperspace, you are thinking about them and impressing them on your mind.

Bear this in mind as you compose your blogs. The person who benefits most from the blog is the blogger so pay attention to what you are thinking and what you are writing so that you can reap the maximum benefit.

Friday is the beginning not the end.

Friday, July 10, 2009

This afternoon the cry "TGIF" will arise all over America as people break free of the bounds of their workaday world and prepare for the weekend. This is in fact the wrong attitude. friday is not the end of the work week, it is the beginning of the weekend.

Most people think of the weekend as two days, Saturday and Sunday, This point of view robs you of 20% of the weekend. the weekend starts when work ends on Friday and doesn't end until you return to work on Monday. That's an additional 12 hours of weekend.

Why do weekend chores have to be done on Saturday? Could some of them be done Friday night, freeing up some of Saturday for fun stuff. Could some of the chores be done Monday morning before you leave for work freeing up some more time.

Be creative with the scheduling of your time and take advantage of the extra half day every weekend!

Be as you wish to seem!

Thursday, July 09, 2009

Ideas just hang around for so long! The quotation is from Socrates. (Pronounced "So-crates" for you fans of Wyld Stallion music" San Diemas High School Football Rules!)

More recently, the modern self-help writer urges "Act as if". These ideas are identical. If you act as though what =you want to happen has happened, people will come to regard you as though it has actually happened and the event will happen.

I had a classmate in law school. The first time we took the bar exam, he came dressed in jeans, a golf shirt and sandals, pretty much like everyone else. The next time the bar exam came around, I was serving as a proctor and this classmate was taking the exam again. This time he was decked out in a three piece suit. When questioned on his attire because he stood out from the rest of the examinees, he announced, when you look good you do good. It wouldn't be much of a story if he failed the exam that time too but he didn't, he passed and has been a practicing attorney for the past 35 years.

I believe I credited Epictitus with saying "Nothing is but that thinking makes it so". That's sort of an inside out way of saying the same thing.

Your thoughts become your actions, your actions become your habits and your habits become your character.

Jimmy Buffet advises that changes in latitude cause changes in attitude. This is true but it leaves off the corollary that changes in attitude cause changes in altitude. It is practically impossible to reach beyond your realistic goals but it is possible to fall short of them. Set your goals, see yourself as having achieved them and act. Remember: "The you you see is the you you'll be!"

Be as you wish to seem!
