It has probably already happened in London but in a few hours we will watch as the President of the IOC watches the flame die and proclaims the games of the XXX Olympiad to be closed and calls on the youth of the world to convene again four years hence in Rio Di Janerio for the games of the thirty-first Olympiad.
Notice he does not call on the member nations to send their finest bio-engineered specimens to compete in the games. He calls on the youth of the world to assemble. The Olympics used to have a purity about them. Athletes competing purely for the sake of the competition. Alsas, that has passed. Adolph Hitler envisioned using the 1936 games to demonstrate the superiority of the white Aryian. Enter Jesse Owens and several Jewish American athletes to put the kibosh on that.
Then enter television and the medal competition between the nations. I the fifties and sixties, during the cold war, the east and west were afraid to actually shoot weapons at each other so they threw athletes at each other every four years. Now all of the news outlets are obsessed with "the medal count". There are only three countries that won more medals than the American women. You know what, The US and China, and Russia SHOULD win a lot more medals than any other Country. Why? Because they have more people. Last week the news media was up in arms because the gold medal winner would over $9,000.00 in income taxes based on his win. The news media intimated the tax was on the medal. This is not so. the tax is on the $25,000.00 that the USOC pays each gold medal winner. So much for amateurism. If a college athlete wins a medal, does he forfeit his college eligibility?
The competition is amazing and the bio-engineered specimens are also but when they get to be 25 or thirty and have lived gymnastics or diving or whatever since they were 5 years old, what can they do? Coach gymnastics or diving? Breed with other divers or gymnasts in hoes of developing a super-race of gymnasts? Become a ward of the state?
We return you now to our regular programing.
