Henry Ford said that whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right! Much has been written on the Power of Positive Thinking (N. V. Peale) and Positive Mental Attitude (WE. Clement Stone & Napoleon Hill). Positive thinking by itself cannot accomplish the impossible. No matter how much you think positively, you probably will not be able to fly. But, within reason, you can accomplish a lot through positive thinking and visualization. A basketball team in Australia was divided into three groups. On day one they each shot 100 free throws and recorded the results. For the next thirty days, group one did not visit the basketball court, group two went to the gym every day and shot free throws for an hour while group three did not go to the gym but spent one hour each day visualizing and vividly imagining themselves shooting free throws and making over 90% of their shots.

At the end of thirty days, group one's results were the same as on day one. Group two showed a marked improvement and group three show improvement almost identical to that of group two.

Never underestimate the power of the human mind.

    No question about positive thinking and the effect of doing so. However, my question is are you always this positive? If you are, could you let me know how you deal with the 'downs' life sometimes throws at us. If you do get down, what do you do to help you get up?

I am basically a positive, high energy person. Though when life throws a dart at me, it's very hard to get out of the funk. Would love to hear more about your philosophies.

If at the beginning of every day you were handed 1,440 ten dollar bills and told you could spend them on anything you wanted but at midnight they became non-negotiable and worthless, you would be careful what you spent the money on and you would be sure to spend all of it by midnight.

That is exactly what happens with life. Everyday ate one second past midnight you are giver 1,440 minutes to spend how you choose but at midnight, those minutes are gone and cannot be recovered. The minutes cannot be saved, the must be spent. How many minutes have we squandered during our lifetimes. How many minutes have you spent worrying? See my previous blog on needless worry. The double whammy of worrying is that over 92% of it is useless and the time spent worrying can be better spent with a minimum of thought. When a worrisome situation presents itself, see what category it falls into. If it is in one of the 92% categories,(already happened, not going to happen, is going to happen and nothing I can do about it, even if it does happen, the results are not too bad) Forget it and get on with your life. If it falls into the 8%, ask yourself "What is the worst thing that can happen? then "If the worst thing happens, what will I do?.. Now you know how you will handle the absolute worst case scenario and that you can handle it. In over 92% of the cases, the worst possible scenario will not happen so you can cope with the real results easily.

You know you can handle the worst case scenario so stop worrying and get on with your life. Do not waste any of your precious 1,440 minutes on needless worry.

I believe it was Wayne Dyer who quoted one of the older self-help philosophers that we each must account for our lives but when called upon to do so, we will not be asked "Why didn't you find a cure for cancer?' of "Why didn't you set a new worlds record for running a mile?". The only question you will be called on to answer is "Why didn't you do all you could with what you had?"

We all have talents and we all have limitations. We are all different. A local radio talk show host often quips, "If you and I agreed on everything, there would be no use for one of us." At the final accounting, we must be able to say that we did all we could with what we had. This is apparent at the gym. I regularly take a "boot camp" class at my gym. The participants in the class range in age from early twenties to me at 62. There are some things that those 20 somethings can do that my more seasoned body finds a bit difficult. I recognize that by trying to keep up, I can hurt myself. About ten years ago, I tried to keep up in a kick boxing class, not knowing my partner was a second degree black belt and when I tried to deliver fifty rapid punches to the bag like he did, I got all swimmy headed and passed out. So when my body says "wait a minute", I listen to it. Sometimes it's just being lazy but most of the time its being honest so I make modifications to the prescribed exercise to get within the range my body is willing to handle. I don't see the benefits as quickly as those who do the more stringent exercises but I don't have to lay off for a week while I heal either.

  Great information for someone like myself who needs to keep doing exercise to just listen to my body and knowone elses to keep going and not hurt myself. Its like taking two steps forward and three steps back. thanks for that.

Don't Worry!, Be Happy!

In a song that was popular several years ago, Bobby McFerrin advised us "Don't Worry!, Be Happy!" This is about as good advice as you can get. People who have studied worry have discovered that over 92% of the things we worry about fall into four categories 1.) Things that are not going to happen 2. Things that have already happened 3.) Things that will happen no matter what we do about them and 4.) Things that don't matter whether they happen or not. This means that only 8% of the things people worry about are things that they can do anything about. Think about how much time people spend worrying and consider the consequences of that needless worry. Just the amount of good sleep lost in a single night tossing and turning over something that doesn't matter is a great price to pay for needless worry. Put the worries out of your mind. Face each situation as it arises, don't waste your life anticipating a problem which may or may not come to fruition.

So, to sum up: "Don't Worry!, Be Happy!"
