V-Day at Our House

Sunday, February 14, 2010

For years, my least favorite day of the year was Valentine's Day. It usually marked the day of the year that I made the biggest fool out of myself. The memories are beyond awful. But five years ago, this wonderful girl came into my life and my days of dread were replaced with something more than greeting cards, flowers, and affections wasted on the wrong people.

I tell my daughters that in good relationships, you don't need holidays to remind yourself of how fortunate you are. It's certainly true for me, anyway. My family is the greatest success I will ever attain.

An indescribably happy dad

I hope each of you had an enjoyable day. I'll be ready for a nice long run tomorrow!

February Update

Friday, February 12, 2010

Things continue to progress as Feb nears the halfway point. I'm especially pleased with my nutrition. It's certainly not perfect, but much better than 2009. The scale is moving slowly and I continue to feel better most of the time.

We've had sick children here this week and sleep has been very hard to get. After working last night, I had to be up at 3 AM to insure that Bailey got her breathing treatment. I just didn't feel up to running today, so I got some more rest after my V-Day shopping trip this AM. The nap felt terrific. My next run should be better because of it. My runs have all been enjoyable, even on the treadmill. The quality is certainly there, which I'm pleased about.

The pounds and inches are flying off my wife. She is working hard and doing well. She's certainly done more than I have this week.

We celebrated Evelyn's 4th birthday last weekend. I'm attaching some photos; they're much more interesting than my writing!

I hope all my Spark friends are having a great February!

What a happy little girl you have there! How refreshing to see such unadulerated joy! :D

Great job staying on track, John. The funny thing about eating... I have found that since I am not posting crazy mileage anymore, it's easier to keep the diet on track. Never would have thought that!

Great job keeping up with everything despite the challenges of illness and bad weather!

And kudos to Rhonda!

January After-Action Review

Tuesday, February 02, 2010

January has never been one of my favorite months. But I'll try and tell it in words and pictures.

In January, I deflated my spare tire (a little) by losing 3 pounds. I also got some of my speed back. I had pizza twice the whole month. I had 1 cookie the whole month. My protein intake was up. We went out to eat once.

I have a long way to go, but I'm very happy with my start.

In January,

I did lots of this and ran some outside, too.

We ate very well; this was homemade pizza night.

I did lots of cross-training; this one is called the Ethan Squat.

Rhonda was the January fitness queen...

...and didn't let anything stop her...

...but some people were going to help, no matter what!

Everyone ate their vegetables...

...but thank goodness it's February!

All of my Spark friends seem to be doing very well, in spite of some challenges. I'm very proud of all of you, but there are a couple who deserve an extra pat on the back. My South Beach Super Runner Girl, Sharon, completed her first marathon last weekend. She's one of many who keep me running an extra mile or doing an extra rep (Kimber!) just to keep pace. I am SO PROUD OF YOU, SHARON! You rock!

Finally, my wife, Rhonda, lost 10 freaking pounds in January! And she did it by hard work and iron discipline. I am so proud of you! She has gotten her pre-pregnancy mojo back and I don't think anything or anyone can stop her from reaching her goals. She's now talking about running her first marathon!

I love you all!

It sounds like you had a similar January to me, John - not so bad but still glad to have it over with. Though it sounds like you've been making a whole lot more progress in deflating the holiday bulge than I have. Congrats on a good month of eating well, running and losing a few. Congrats to Rhonda too - 10 pounds is incredible!! I love how you both include Ethan in your workouts - LOL!!

Brief Update

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

I'll keep this short and sweet. That's the goal for all my blogs in 2010.

Nutrition is improving. My goal is to maintain healthy habits 99% of the time and not sweat the other 1%. Water is good, but salt has been a challenge. I've only had 3 pieces of pizza the whole year and desserts have been relatively healthy.

Runs have been decent; did 10.5 yesterday. I'm walking in-between runs and strength-training daily. I'm back on the bike. Things are going well. The achilles is painful but manageable if I'm active in my recovery.

I have a long way to go, but the road to where I want to be is still traveled one day at a time.

Tonight's strength finale was Evelyn pushups. They're a little tougher than they were a couple years ago!

We're thinking of running the Walt Disney World Marathon in 2011. We should decide in the next couple of weeks. Every day, Evelyn asks me if it's time for us to drive there!

You are doing great--- I think the answer to Disney will be yes, as the disappointment in those eyes would be too much-LOL!

I can't wait for the Evelyn pushup picture of 2020-LOL! Your bicept will be superman strong by then, too.

oh that's so stinkin' cute!! I bet those pushups are getting harder! I remember my Dad doing bicep curls with me hanging off his arm and not understanding why he couldn't just keep doing them as I got bigger! LOL Great job! Your family would love the Marathon and all the activities that will go along with it!!

Very good goals! Much better to limit your "treats" then to try to eliminate them all together. I hope you reach your 5K goal in April at the Race for the Cure, I'll be there to congratulate you when I cross the finish line a few minutes after you!
