Progress :)

Friday, October 23, 2009

My diabetes A1c is going down, it is 7.7 from a previous 8.7 back in July. My doctor said all my other labs were good too.

My next goal is to get the A1c below 7.0 so I need to continue with the healthier eating and add more exercise. Also by the doctors scale I lost 3 pounds.

"Thank you Lord for your saving grace and inspiration from my sparkfamily. Amen"

I too am diabetic so I can truly celebrate with you on your HA1c levels. I am in the 7 ranges also. I know they are going down. I fear diabetic complications and do not want to have any due to my own undisciplined living.

Good for you. I have no health problems but have friends that do so I know how important it is to get that A1c down. It will keep you from kidney and eye trouble down the road. Great job!

Having faith

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Last week Tuesday my internet service was disconnected due to late payments (83.90) and I was so lost without it. I know that our budget was tight and I didn't think we'd be able to pay and get reconnected, but I prayed about it, and I even wrote the amount on a paper and put it in a special place. Although I still worried about it during the week, I did try and borrow from my family (6peeps) and only one was able to help, so I left the rest to GOD, that if we are to get our service back that it will be provided and that I wouldn't have to borrow from anyone else and by his grace I was able to get $43 and then my husband pitched in the other $20, he even took me to pay my bill. Oh I am so very happy and Thank GOD for this blessings.
As for my weight loss, I am losing about 1 pound a week and I am ok with that for now because each one counts.
I am blessed, and I pray that you all will be too.

A pound a week is an excellent rate, good for you! A good sustainable rate that is good for your body. Rapid weight loss is hard on the body.

And congrats on the answer to prayer! God is good, even when we get into difficulty, he is there.

needs & stuff :(

Sunday, October 11, 2009

I've been weighing my self daily and my scale seems to be holding at a 3 pound loss since last Tuesday, but I'll wait till tomorrow to post it. I think I got my portions right, it's just the quality of food thats hard to accomplish, being on a limited $ budget. Water consumption is right on target too. It's just the exercise that I just am unable to be consistant with. I did two days of exercise, one at 20 minutes and another at 15, and I am hoping to get in another 20 today.

My emotional health is on a low right now. I don't know why, but I feel so blah emoticon
empty, and uncomplete. Maybe I just need some sleep

You're diet may be one of the reasons why you feel so blah (that would be my first guess). The weather. You're current attitude. Depression. Addictions. Your menstrual cycle.

My diet & the weather are 2 of my biggest "blah feeling" instigators.

I know it is so hard to eat healthy because of finances. I was in this boat too @ one time. Have you tried any of the places that pass out free or discounted food? there are quite a few of them that offer fresh fruits & veggies (heartland co-op is one & angel food is another and both are nation wide). and really...fresh is so much better for you than canned. But I know...fresh is so expensive. Who can afford $4.00 for a pound of grapes or $8-$10 for 3# of apples? and fresh veggies? who can afford to pay $20 for 2 or 3 days worth of vegetables? It's rediculous the cost. A lot of churches, salvation armies & food pantries also offer free or discounted foods (some are actual meals & some are boxes of food/rice/pasta/staples). research it online & call around to some of the churches in your area. Not having transportation makes it harder but if a person wants something bad enough or realizes they have to do this...it is usually doable, ride or no ride.

There are other cheap ways to get in the proper nutrition & being able to feel like you're actually filling your belly when you eat.

Peppers. red, green, yellow, orange bells....all of them so full of nutrients, low in calories, no fat no sodium. They also cook well with anything. Buy a cheap bottle of olive oil (the local dollar tree sells it for a buck) and saute it with any peice of meat, add it to beans, rice, eat them by themselves if you like them like that. yes, they can be expensive this time of year but the extra cost is worth it in attaining your veggie count. Plus you don't have all the sodium (translation: fluid retention) from the cheaper canned veggies. You get all the colors of veggies that you need right there in one serving! The dillon's (kroger) has red & green on sale for .88cents each & the yellow & orange were $1.68 each.

Beans & whole wheat rice are a high source of protein & fiber. They are also full of alot of other nutrients. Fresh beans are rather cheap & great for you. Canned beans are full of sodium, calories & fat. Some lunch meats & breads are cheap. they also horrible for you. Eat only whole grain whole wheat breads or eat none at all. Buy the meat whole & slice your own lunchmeat.

If you HAVE to eat canned veggies..that's fine, just 'wash' them before you serve them and never cook or serve them in their own canned juices! This is where all the sodium comes from.

If you can't afford to buy nice cuts of meat or can't afford to buy meat very often...just buy chicken or white fish. truthfully...it is the cheapest of all meats. (2) 8 ounce chicken breast (which is a pound of chicken) will feed a family of four cheaper than a pound of ground beef. Also...dairy is a good source of meat replacement. cottage cheese inparticular.

I use to always think that it was cheaper for my husband & I to eat out all the time. We always had leftovers that would feed us for another meal or two. But when I actually sat down and figured it out...we spend approx every 3 months @ Sam's (warehouse bulk shopping) $300. that breaks down to $25.00 per week. And then at the regular grocery store I spend about another $25.00 a week for side items. Sooo...I'm basically spending $50.00 a week on groceries & that includes fresh & frozen fruits & vegetables. We spend another $500 every 6 months at the meat market on a 1/4 side of beef & an 1/8 side of pork. that averages to $10.21 per week for meats which brings my total to $60 & change per week for groceries or a total of $240 per month. Which...really, we don't even spend that much. 90% of the time we have the $300 stock up bill ut then for the next 2 or 3 visits we will only spend maybe $150-$200...and we end up giving alot of food away too! I am terrible about cooking for 10 when it's just my husband an myself. I grew up cooking for a large family and it's hard to just cook for us. Plus a lot of times our stepkids show up right at meal time...

I think with the right planning and no matter now small your budget, one can always figure out how to eat healthier.

Your doing a great job!...Your portions, your water, even exercise! Two days is better than none. As JoAnn said, the exercise will come as you feel better about what you are doing on the food part...at least that's what I am hoping too! ha!

emoticon JoeAnne your doing great. As a Spark friend told me the other day getting the food in check is 80% of the battle. I'm like you with the exercise there was weeks where I do one day @ 10 minutes now I'm averaging 3 to 4 days.
As we lose the weight we will feel more and more like exercising. I pray your stress level decreases and your mood increases.
