How I'm doing it......

Monday, March 01, 2010

How Iím doing itÖÖ.

Since several of you have asked me how Iím losing the weight, I thought Iíd take some time to summarize that last two months. My goal is to drop 64 lbs this year to get down to 200

Iíll start by saying that I made radical changes! I went from doing nothing except work and sit on my butt all day, eating what I wanted, when I wanted and how much I wanted, to the exact 180 opposite of that.

I am using sparkpeople.com to track everything I eat. Seeing is believing and I use sparkpeople.com to track every minute of fitness Iím doing. I am eating somewhere in the range of 1000-1200 calories a day(this will go up in March) and burning alot more than that! On an average day, I burn around 2000 calories, not counting my BMR. This is an absolutely free website, easy to use with great support. They have a number of reports you can use to help on your journey. I look at my calorie differential on a daily basis, if Iím eating more then Iím working out, I canít lose weight, itís that simple. They have meal plans, fitness videos, forums, support groups, you name it. My name is jmerlau on sparkpeople if you join, please note that I referred you.

My January workout schedule looked something like this:

- 5am walk at least 2 miles around the neighborhood

- During the day I walk three times(typically) while at work with a group of 3 or 4 guys I work with. We walk in the tunnels under downtown Dallas and our path is nearly 1 mile each trip.

- After work I would do at least 30 minutes on the elliptical in the garage. I also try to do Ďsomethingí as far as fitness/strength exercises goes. Typically about an hour of work.

My February workout looked something like this:

- 5am at least 40 minutes on the elliptical in the garage. ( some friends gave us a really nice machine that has become my new best friend)

- During the day I walk three times(typically) while at work with a group of 3 or 4 guys I work with. We walk in the tunnels under downtown Dallas and our path is nearly 1 mile each trip.

- After work I do at least 40 minutes on the elliptical again. Iíve been pushing this up to 60 minutes in the evening for the last week.

My March workout will look something like this:

- 5am M, W, F I will begin to jog 2-2.5 miles outside

- 5am T, TH will be elliptical in the garage

- I will still walk three times with the guys at work

- After work I will work on the elliptical 30-40 minutes as time allows. Chelle is going back to school so Iíll have to step up at the house a little bit in the evenings.

- Am working to get a weight set for the garage so I can utilize that to tone the flab.

I am doing my first race on May 2nd this year, check it out at http://warriordash.com I also have on target(Chelle too I think) to do the turkey trot on thanksgiving morning. This is an 8mile trot around downtown Dallas. I would also like to try a Ĺ marathon at the end of the year.

Here is my weight chart that I'm keeping on a weekly basis. Last week and this week Ive been traveling on Saturday, so friday has been my official weigh in day.

I will add that I have lost 38lbs this year following this plan.

Sorry to bore you with the details, but I found it easier to answer everybody at once.

I would definitely dial up the calories. A day or two at that level periodically is good to shock the system, but I would start adding calories and get up to at least 1700-1800. Work on adding in about 50-75 calories every 3-4 days until you get it up.

Just my suggestion.

Sweet. But, it sounds like to me that you're not eating nearly enough to support all of that exercise; but that's my opinion.

Keep on, keeping on!

Fitness Minutes gone wild

Monday, March 01, 2010

I was just looking around SP and I was trying to collect a few SparkPoints.

I was BLOWN away by the number of minutes some people have already put into their fitness for the month of March!! As I write this blog, there are only approximately 760 minutes in the month of March expire, for cst in the USA anyway. Yet there are numberous people who have 960 fitness minutes for the month??? Somebody explain to me how this is possible please? I find it really hard to understand how this is possible.

OK, stepping off my soap box now, this means nothing to me personally I must add. I only care what I do in an honest days workout schedule, which btw is posted below:

My problem with all these minutes being entered like that is that these people are only cheating themselves and I find that really sad to see. Being totally upfront and completely honest with yourself is the only way to get results.

Please note that I am only curious, but I would love to hear from sombody who can help me understand this way of doing things, I'm new to SP so maybe I'm missing something.

Make it a GREAT DAY and get up and move a little (honestly)

Interesting. I wonder what that's all about. Being dishonest doesnt benefit or change anything. I hope this is due to some other reason.

This prob doesn't account for near all of it but I believe that Spark accounts 5 minutes for each "strength" exercise. For example, 2 sets of 12-15 squats = 5 fitness minutes as far as spark is concerned. I know it only takes me maybe 2-2.5 minutes. 10 exercises like this and spark sees it as almost an hour, where it takes me maybe 30 minutes total (hard to tell for me, I split mine up here at work)...annnnd maybe they check them off before hand for the month? I dunno but I remember when I found out about the strength accounting for 5 min each one, that made more sense as to why my fitness minutes seemed to fly by.

It's all I can do to do the 65 minutes on the elliptical or arc trainer every morning :)

I would really like to know this also. I always see tons of fitness minutes. I think that you meant 760 hours (I actually get 744) and 44,640 minutes. But still...I think you are on to something.

I was under the impression that SP tracked the minutes, not people? I dunno, I'm new too. Maybe they are signed in under two computers? I'm with you, though - honesty is always the best way.

I was really good up until Saturday night and today. The wine tasting led to bottle drinking (not alone) and poor choices, but tomorrows a new day.

What's one weekend in my life time?

Glad you had a great time.

I am on the road today to Covington KY (CINCY AREA) with a bunch of teens for a youth group. I weighed in for my end of the month this morning, since was worried about how it may go. But we can survive travel, have fun.
