what does SP mean to me??

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Since Dec 28th, SP has been my life line!

I made a decision to get healthy and the friends I've made on SP are an absolute asset to my progress. You guys (you know who you are) have posted to my blogs, my sparkpage, emailed me, etc to offer advice and encouragement, THANK YOU!!

SP has given me a way to open my eyes to what I was really eating in a day and just how little exercise I've done. Seeing what I was eating was an eye opener for me. I now thrive on exercise and crave more and more time to burn some fat off my body. I have lost over 32lbs since Dec 28th and counting. I will reach my goal by the end of the year, guaranteed.

Thank you Chris Downie for starting this site. You have helped change my life forever.

You drive us wild

Monday, February 22, 2010

You show us everything you've got
You keep on dancin' and the room gets hot
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You say you wanna go for a spin
The party's just begun, we'll let you in
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You keep on shoutin', you keep on shoutin'

I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day

You keep on saying you'll be mine for a while
You're lookin' fancy and I like your style
You drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You show us everything you've got
Baby, baby that's quite a lot
And you drive us wild, we'll drive you crazy
You keep on shoutin', you keep on shoutin'

I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day
I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day
I wanna rock and roll

Your advice requested

Sunday, February 21, 2010

Hello to all you runners out there.

I have never been a runner per say so I need some advise. This weekend I managed to run around 6 miles on the treadmill in three different workouts (2 miles each), give or take a little bit.

I found that no matter how much stretching I did, my calves cramped up and I had to fight through that. I wasn't pushing it very hard, trust me, mostly about 4.7mph was my speed. Does anybody have any advice about this??

I was trying to keep my upper body and arms very relaxed as I ran. The longer I went, the hearder I found to keep my breathing in any sort of rhythm either. Is this normal?

I need to start trying to run a little more but only have the streets to run on right now, I have no treadmill at home and I'm not interested in a gym just yet. What advise is out there to help protect the shins if I run on the street(sidewalk)??

I appreciate any advise - throw it out there for me please....help me and I promise I'll try to pay it back if given a chance.

To add to what everyone else has said, it's hard to say what could be causing your cramping without knowing what kind of running training you've already done. If you have not done much of any running before, tackling 6 miles would be too much for most people. Do whatever is comfortable, make sure to get a good cool down walk when you're done and then do your stretching. Most experts I've read have said not to increase your mileage by more than 10% a week so your body can adjust and repair.
Another thing to look at is your form. If you are overstriding, you could just be putting too much work on your calves. Check out this SP article if you haven't already http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource
/fitness_articles.asp?id=823
Proper form along with good footwear will also help protect your shins.
The breathing should get easier the more you get used to running. Again taking it easy and not doing too much too soon. I tend to try to take relaxed deep breaths, it helps me prevent side stitches too.
Sorry for the long post, hopefully some of this helps. Also, you might try digging into runnersworld.com. They have a pretty good set of articles for beginning runners. Good luck with all your goals. You're doing great so far.

I agree with ST totally; check in to the C25K program here on Spark.

When I first started I couldn't 'run' a whole .25 mile, but I built my way up.

As for cramping it can be a number of things; including dehydration. It's also part of the bodies resistance to cramp; cramp starts, you stop doing what the body doesn't like. It takes some time to get past this, but I'd say it's a case of doing too much too soon.

You might want to make sure you are hydrated enough. One of the signs of not having enough hydration is cramping.

You might want to look at c25k. It is design to go from no running to 5K in about 10 weeks.

Just a thought.

I did it, I've registered for the Warrior Dash on Sunday May 2nd in Dallas!!!

I am SO excited, but scared to death at the same time. I've set the bar fairly high to get ready for this extreme race, but I'm determinded to make it happen. It's not about WINNING this thing, it's about finishing and have a great time while doing it!

If you've not heard about this CRAZY day, check it out at http://warriordash.com
