August 14th, 2010 - Watermelon Run 5K race, Ft. Worth, TX
The day started at 5:20 when the alarm woke me and yes I was nervous, full of energy, ready for a good run. I started getting the family around because today, they were all going to support and watch me run. Meant alot to have them there too! We left around 6:15am for the park and arrived around 7:15ish, find a place to park and off to registration.
Now....we all know that I'm a rookie to all this and this is only my third straight up race. (I've ran two extreme races too, the Warrior Dash and the Caveman Crawl)...but anyway...I say that because I've already learned, ya gotta roll with the punches. I see my friend Brian and his wife Ruth walking over the hill so I walk to meet them. Ruth didn't recognize me, I LOVE THAT! We walk and talk up to the registration table, the guy in front of me is paying with cash. I walked up and said "I pre paid on line". The guy looks at me....looks around and yells "Did anybody pull the online registration list?" On the inside, I was cracking up!! How low key can you get I thought. The guy finally looks back at me and said, just sign here and go ahead. So that's what we did! THEN they were saying we were using the wrong racing bibs. In the end, we had the right bibs and we were all set. My wife and daughters found a place to sit near the start/finish line, we visited with friends and got ready to roll.
My walkmeter (also does runs) didn't work today for some reason which ticks me off, but oh well, I'll live. I had to learn to use my sportsline watch to keep my pace, rather than the voice on my walkmeter telling me where I was at. Anyway.....it was a very flat course down through the park, turn around and run along the trinity river a while, then literally turn around and reverse your footsteps. At the 2 mile mark I kicked up a notch, which was too early honestly. I kicked it for about the last mile and about died on the last .1 of a mile. Did I mention it was probably about 90 degree's already when we ran, alot of the course was in the sun. I felt absolutely great about today's run!! I believe I'm dealing with sciatic nerve pain and that can be REALLY painful when it's flaring up, this has been kicking my butt all week!
My time was 28:12 and I was 3rd place in my age group!! I got a medal and everything!!! WOO HOO
There was also a FUN relay, that we didn't do. One person carried a watermelon 1/2 mile down and the other carried the watermelon back. That was pretty funny actually, I can't imagine carrying a watermelon that far while trying to run!!
I'd like to say thank to everybody for the AMAZING support that ya'll give me. The energy is amazing and I can nearly FEEL that energy when I'm out there pushing myself to be the best person I can be. One year ago, I would NEVER have thought about doing this, now, I can't WAIT to my next race!!
Am I really becoming a runner????
Here are the my four friends who ran today:
Here I am with my first race medal:
Next race.....Dallas Running Club 5mile breakfast bash Sept 5th....I HOPE to see ALOT of the DallasSpark team there!!!!!

I've not worked out since Sunday afternoon church football etc. I believe that the Bursa in my right hip has decided to flare up, grrrrrr!
I do NOT like being inactive for any length of time, but I've been resting for the most part of three days now. Tonight, I believe I will attempt a little RevAbs, Total Strength and Mercy Abs workout. I will not push my luck though as I have a 5K to run saturday morning!
I keep telling myself "Jerome, you have no limits" :-( maybe I do still have a few limits, the pain has been fairly high until today, I can live with it today!
I will be back to full strength soon, I feel like I'm letting my team down.
I will be back in action(FULL SWING) soon and will MAKE IT HAPPEN!!

Saturday Aug 7th, 2010 - Planned event - Dallas Running Club Cross Country Relay races. This race is 6 miles with each member running a 2 mile leg each.
I rolled out of bed at about 5:15am because I couldn't sleep anymore, I still get the nerves of a little boy! I checked my email first thing and I'm glad I did. I was supposed to be running with two other sparkers from the Dallas Spark team, we were there Tortoise and the Hares team. Well, Lynette had gotten sick over night and wasn't going to make it for the race. I wasn't 100% sure who the third member was, but I fired off an email to see what her plans were anyway. Ofcourse I didn't hear anything since most normal people don't check their email that early! Strike one! I decided I was going to run anyway! I knew the DRC folks would pair us up if we didn't have a complete team. I did make one pit stop along the way to hopefully see some other Dallas Spark team members who were walking on the OTHER side of the lake from where the race was. I missed them to, strike two! I'm still in this game I thought so off I go to Norbuck park to run.
I found the check in table, explain that my team wasn't going to make it and they tell me to take my race bibs and go stand under the trees here and find people to make a team with?!?!?! WHAT..well that's sorta vague!! Oh well, I did go stand under the trees and within a few minutes I hear somebody say they were looking for a third. I spoke up...PICK ME PICK ME..well, not quite like that but that's how I felt inside. I met Carol and Urba who needed a third so off we go. The only thing at issue was they were entered as a female team, their third couldn't make it. (No Lynette, I did not put on the running skirt!!) It was all for fun anyway we thought, no big deal. I wore the bib number of their third since they were all sequenced out in order quite nicely. Then the girls picked up our baton, it is a relay after all. Well wouldn't you know the baton was a plastic rake about 2 feet long and lime green. It was great.
I ran the first 2 mile leg nearly as hard as I could run. It was truly cross country, too. I was careful to place each foot down so I wouldn't roll and ankle, it was pretty rough in some spots. First .75 mile was fairly flat, I could handle that, no sweat. Well, I was sweating cause it was already HOT in Dallas at the 8:05 am start. at the .75 marker I hit the first hill, not bad, but enough to take a little steam out of me. Then I looked up and saw the big hill, UGH!!! Not nice at all. Press on Jerome, remember, you have no limits I thought (previous blog), I kept pressing up the hill, legs burning, sweat dripping and lungs screaming. I made it to the top without passing out or stopping, success I thought. AH...look ahead, water!! Have you ever tried to run and drink water from a cup?? Lemme tell, this was my second attempt and I failed again!! Water all over me, gagging from choking, I laughed at myself, such a dork. Then we start down hill, with a volunteer warning, down hill, stumps, rocks, etc be careful he says. WHOA..it was horrible. Nearly every step had to be carefully thought out and placed carefully. I think the down hill part was the last .5 miles or so, something like that. I managed to pass a few (eat my dust) on that last part as I tried to finish big. THEN I had to remember....what was Carol wearing?!?!?!?! SHEESH, we'd just met gemme a break, oh wait, there she is. I handed her the baton and off she went. What fun!
I don't know any official times at all, but I do know my time was between 18-19 minutes, not bad for my second race ever!
I don't know our over all time either, BUT....I'm proud to announce that our team, The Corner Turners won SECOND place in the women's division...hahahahahahahahahahah. I didn't care, the girls ran up front to pick up our awards, while I hid in the back. WOO HOO...I have my first race trophy, a brand new shiny shot glass!!
All in all it was a great race, great time and made some new friends I hope to run with again one day. Thanks Carol and Urba for letting me run with ya!
Here is a pic with Carol and Urba (and the baton)
and here is my first trophy
after getting two strikes early in the day, I'd say I hit a homerun!

Today I celebrate!!!!
December 28th, 2009 I started the transformation of a lifetime. I wanted a better life for my wife, for my children, and for me. I've worked incredibly hard, WITHOUT making rocket science or brain surgery out of this process. Its' not that complicated really.
Do three three things:
1. know WHAT/HOW much you eat (track it)
2. shut up and sweat (exercise)
3. do it every single day!!
What does hard work look like??
Here I am at 264lbs
Here I am 91 lbs lighter - weighing in at 173.3 this morning
I'm DONE with weight loss officially now, HOWEVER, I'm STILL a work in progress, hoping to grow as a husband, father and person every single day!!
If I can do this....ANYBODY can do this!!
I've added the chart below for my own good:
