Finding it harder and harder to get heart rate up

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

I have been very frustrated the last two mornings while doing my RevAb workout. I've had trouble getting my heart rate up to burn the calories I THINK I need to burn.

I guess I just need to settle into maintenance and see how this works before I freak out, right?!?! I mean come on Jerome, you don't NEED to burn 1500 calories day anymore, maybe burning 5-700 a day is enough to maintain, I dunno.

I really didn't have much of a point here, except to share that I've been frustrated wtih the calorie burn. On the OTHER hand, I am getting stronger by the day I think. RevAbs is helping to build a strong fitness foundation and we use alot of dumb bells and bands so that's good.

I'll just keep running......run Jerome run......

Good night dear Spark People

    J-

You DON'T need to burn 1500 cals during your workout. Remember you have more muscle mass now than you did in the "before picture". More muscle mass means (4 M's) you are burning more cals throughout the day - even when you are at rest. I know you already know this stuff but it counts. So you need to include it in your calculations. In other words, don't just count your cal burn during your workout. Add up your cal burn for the entire day, workout, daily activities, work, and sleep. Track all of it and then compare it to your cal intake. I believe you will find you are doing much better than you think.
Keep it up!

Just know that it means that your heart is getting stronger. My dad went through all kinds of physical therapy after his by-pass surgery and the longer it takes to get to your target heart rate, the better it is.

I don't know how that relates to reaching your goal weight and burning enough calories. I'd be willing to guess that you can achieve more in terms of tinkering with your diet than with your calories burned number.

    Jerome,

I was once told by a doctor that a low heart rate means you have a well tuned heart-machine. So, celebrate that you have reached such an incredible health peak!

Be well,
Nancy

Ahhh, maintanence mode!!! I can't wait until I get to that point....enjoy the fact that all your hard work has paid off and you are very fit and healthy!!!!

It'll probably take your mind a little while to adjust to this new "normal" lifestyle since you've been working out at very intense levels in the past!!!

Relax, relate, release!!! you deserve it!

Bro, it seems like we are in the same world. I decided to just keep running and maintain. I weighed in today after a month and lost .2 pounds! I know right! The kicker was in that month I went from 9.9% body fat to 6.8%, so although the scale barely moved, things are looking up....or down I guess. LOL! Don't worry about it bro. Keep up the good work and keep getting stronger!

Although I am in Vegas, I will sneak in some workouts.

It happens to everyone who's challenging their cardiovascular system like you have.

My current resting heart rate is between 48 and 51, even though I'm not an elite athlete.

Keep working hard and the results will show.

Well, not really. I feel really motivated to burn a few more!

Too Hot to Handle - my first true 5K race

Sunday, July 18, 2010

WOW, what a day!!!!

I got up at my nearly my normal time of 4:30am, my nerves were getting the best of me! I also had my normal breakfast of a bagel thin with a thin layer of peanut butter, then showered to wake up!!. Drank about 1/2 bottle of water and left the house by about 5:30am. White Rock Lake is about 37ish minutes from my house so that wasn't a bad drive, even though I'd not been there before.

I met a friend and former co-worker there who hasn't seen me since I've changed my life, he was a little surprised and had to look twice! It was nice to catch up with Brian and he taught me how to work the crazy timing chip, HAHA. So we checked out the booths set up, there was ALOT of stuff to take in post race, we found the starting line, then headed for the restrooms. If I had a complaint bout the day, this would be it, not nearly enough. HOWEVER, While standing in line, I looked up and nonother than SparkCoach Nancy was walking right at me!!! I immediately knew who she was and she knew who I was, there was no hand shake, it was a hug at first sight! HAHA. I also met Nancy's husband and Marathonmamato3 (Lynette) who I'm running a race with on Aug 7th!!

HOW COOL WAS THIS....I was getting to meet some fellow sparkers in person. I've heard other people talk about it like BillAlex and how cool that was, and it was very cool!! We stood there talking about my story, running, you name it for a while then I was off the take care of business.

Brian and I got in line as we were supposed to start at 7:30, NOT...delayed for 20 minutes, not sure why though. We were finally off and crawling at first, there were a BUNCH of people there.

I was able to keep a pretty good pace and really enjoyed the run. About .75 into the race we faced our first hill, basically was an entrance ramp from a lower road up to a higher road, that was killer, but I took it really slow to conserve energy. The rest of the race I really just kept running my pace as best I could. Coming DOWN that incline on the way back to the finish was nice, I was able to turn it on a little for the last .75 mile while listening to Europe blast "Final Countdown" in my ears, perfect ending I thought!

After I finished, I grabbed up some free stuff, muscle milk, some sort of water, gu chomps, Clif bars, clif Shot Blocks, etc Brian took off not long after we finished so I went to the finish line to watch Lynette and Nancy finish, there were both doing the 15K race. I saw both finish and it was TOTALLY COOL that all three of us ended in a group hug right after Nancy crossed the finish line! We all chatted for a bit and went our own ways, HOME was the direction we all went. ( I might add I mowed my yard as soon as I got home..haha)

OFFICIALLY I finished in 32:04:01 which was 24th place for men 40-44(there were 47 of us) I am very proud of this time and thrilled I got to run this race today.

UNOFFICIALLY here are the stats that I got from my walkmeter on my iPhone:

Fastest Pace: 8:22 /mile

Here is a pic of the three of us post race

Here is a pic of me and Brian

Next on the list of the Cross Country team relay - I'll run a 2 mile segment with two other sparkers on Aug 7th.

SMALL EDIT....I failed to mention that it was HOOOOOOT when we ran this bad boy!! The weather lived up to the race name

I snagged this pic from the race website.....look at me go..LOL

If you feel great and full of energy, I'd go on a long, brisk walk. You want full energy for the race tomorrow. And give yourself permission to have a healthy, carbo filled meal.

I know you'll rock it tomorrow. Be prepared for heat and bring water! I've been on runs where they ran out of water!

Have a great time!

RevAbs day 2

Thursday, July 15, 2010

so this morning at 4:50am we hit the home gym (garage..lol) to start day to of RevAbs. Today we had:
total strength - this is a 40 minute workout the consisted of back lunges (I FEEL THEM TONIGHT), squats (working on the booty), pushups (sheesh I need this), and a round of cardio (basically a million jumping jacks). Repeat this circuit three times with the third being the "spicy round" when we added a few things. On the lunges, we hold dumbells, third set you press the weights straight over head, same with the squats. The push ups we did basically a side plank after each pushup, then a million jumping jacks.

Mercy Abs - yes, I was begging for mercy, basically a 20 minute set of crunches (sort of), booty bridges (yep, I still feel it) and something I forgot what he called them. We did some V ups (O M G...killer)

All in all, so far, I really like this workout series. In that 1 hour workout, I burned over 1100 calories according to my trusty Sportsline S7 series watch!

Tonight I did a 3 mile schedule mileage builder run and burned another 700 calories....

WOO HOO......GREAT DAY!!!

    Jerome,

No wonder you are so thin! Gesh, you put me to shame. I don't think I've ever burned more than 300 or 400 calories in a workout. Maybe my heart monitor isn't working right. Oh, that was for a 30-minute workout. Duh! Guess an hour would be 800 calories. I lost/left my heart monitor band in the locker room a couple of months ago. Guess it's time to get a new one.

Be well,
