I really appreciate everyones kinds words on yesterdays blog. I found out last night it really isn't that bad. Evie is not behind at all! She is just below the benchmark cutoff for words per minute and accuracy. After reading a different book with her last night I see what they are talking about. They are going to be working with her (and others) on phonic skills, blending and decoding, to help her read more quickly and accurately. They do these groups early on so they don't fall behind. They will be sending me a pamplet to show me the books I can use at home that are specific to what she needs help with.

But we did have a great reading session last night. She read me half of her library book and then I read chapt 1 of Stuart Little to them. They really enjoyed it. No matter what we are working on, the TV is off at 6pm and we are going to set down all together and read for at least 20 min every night.

Upsetting news

So my daughters school just did their second reading assessment on all k-2 grades. I rec'd a note saying that she is moving to Tier 2 group where she will get a little extra tutoring. I asked the teacher and she said that she had just fallen slightly below where she should be. And that I should ask the tutoring dept for more info (which I just sent the email). She told me not to worry, it is only slightly below and she should do fine with the extra support, BUT how can I not worry!!!

I thought she was reading well. She does read a book everynight as part of her homework (she has to turn in a reading log everymonth and gets a free personal pizza as part of the pizza hut book it club thru the school). But as I look, she tends to pick the easier, shorter books and ones that she has read over and over. I tell her to grab something else but that is what she wants so I don't argue, just as long as she is reading, right??!! We have tons of books (I went nuts in all the book clubs when she was a baby), so I think it is time for me to start picking her nightly book. I think I am going to break up our reading sessions. Let her read to me then read a chapter book to her.

    What great advice you have gotten. Bizzie Boy my Boston Terrier was a therapy reading pup ! He would go to the two elementary schools that are right here in my neighborhood for an hour each day at both schools and would sit with the child while they would read to him. This was to give the child confidence that they can read out loud. Because teachers, parents and other children who are older forget to keep their mouths shout when the child makes a mistake. The dog just enjoys the fact that the child is reading to them. So here is another idea that I'd heard from the therapy teacher. Read the book to both your children a few days before you give it to her to read. That way you have read the book know what is going on with it, your daughter has heard the book, but now will have to read it. Either out loud or to her self. when she is finished with the book, then aske her a few questions. This will give you a better understanding if it is she doesn't know how to pronounce the words correctly , but does know what she thinks it is saying. That will then give you a clue as to how she does on the tests. Good luck, I'm so happy to see that your school system was on top of the situation and got her help so quickly ! Bravo to one and all that are working with Evie! As for you . I wish that my Mom would have taken time when I was a child to read to me or listen to me read. YOUR doing a Fantastic JOB MOM !!!!

    i think you picking a book for her sounds like a great idea. don't worry so much. just give her a chance and some time. i have a nephew that has a speech impairment, and he has made HUGE strides in his reading and speech. just because she needs a little extra tutoring, it's ok! she will be just fine. emoticon

  Your doing fine!! I do like your idea about picking a book for so that she get's a little more challenge. Also agree with earlier post to question her to get her comprehension skills working. Again your are doing just fine!!!

    It does sound like you are doing everything right. Also, it is a good idea to go through the books on their bookshelves once in a while. Box up everything that is too easy/ boring for her. Either donate the books to a daycare or sell them at 1/2 Price books, or give to younger sibling. Her reward for donating/ selling her books could be a couple new/used books that are more interesting and at her reading level.

    Don't worry about it so much. It sounds like you are a very caring mother and have been doing the right thing for her. I agree, challenge her a little more. She is probably reading just fine but maybe not getting as much reading comprehension as the tests would like. So after she reads to you or to herself, have her explain what is going on in the story. If she does fine on that it may be that she has test anxiety and is not scoring to her real ability. Keep doing what you are doing. Your daughter is so lucky to have a parent like you!

So I finished both my challenges, I have lost 10 lbs, and now it was time to refine my goals/program to carry on with. I feel so accomplished this week!

Found that momentum I lost yesterday!

I just couldn't get up the motivation or energy to do anything yesterday. I did get my lower boday strength training in but no cardio. Today was awesome though.

I finally tried that Kettlebell workout today. I did a 15 min session this morning and another 15 this evening. WOW WOW WOW! It sure is a workout but a lot of fun. The movements are easy to keep up with so I wasn't getting lost! Kathy Smith is Great!!

Did a 45 min upper body workout this evening. Did day 3 video twice, and then some other misc: wrist curls, seated tricep extensions and alternating bicep curls.

Then I tried out the new yoga DVD I bought too. I did a 10 min PM yoga session which was pretty relaxing at the end of an AWESOME workout!

Tomorrow is weigh in. Hopefully some good news! Keeping my fingers crossed!!!
