Surviving a get-together: the 3 Ps

Since my sister told me what they were serving, I could make a game plan:

1/2 bagel & lox
3/4 cheese omelet
1 mini cheesecake (I made it, so I knew what was in it)
2 chocolate dipped strawberries

Since it's a 1 1/2 hr drive & I get bored traveling, I made sure to bring snacks, too: celery & apple slices.

The only wild card was what everyone else brought: which turned out to be mostly desserts, mostly store bought & not tempting to me.

- and I had a slice for breakfast, with a banana.

I stuck to my plan: I ate the apple on the way down & was really happy to have the celery slices before leaving because there was no veggies!

I'm a volume girl & portion sizes are probably my last frontier. It's not that I haven't ben working on them, but now it's serious. I want to keep off the weight I lost while sick - and lose more.

I won't lie: I wanted a whole bagel & it wasn't easy to leave those last few bites of omelet on my plate either. But I want those pounds to go. I want it bad. It requires some sacrifice. Despite running HMs, I'm really a pretty sedentary person. So I really need to watch the portion sizes.

It's not all about the food, folks! My parents are in their mid to late 80s & I don't know how much longer they'll be around, or when a holiday might be my last with them. My dad has already outlived his dad, altho my mom has a way to go.

So stop & shoot the breeze with the ones you love! You won't regret the food you didn't eat (well, not much, anyway), but you will regret time squandered.

Hope you enjoyed your mother's day, whether or not you're a mom.

I read this is Woman's World: "At a family gathering, skip the food you can get anywhere and only eat the special dishes like Grandma's potato salad. You'll feel more than satisfied without inhaling hundreds of extra calories"

    I recently read that there is some evidence to show that just sniffing something delicious tricks the brain into thinking you've actually
eaten it. Not sure if my brain would fall for
that. You've got great discipline with your
eating. (and running)

    Bagels are the last frontier for me. My ultimate comfort food! Kudos for walking away.
I spent part of yesterday thinking about my parents - unavoidable on mother's day. Enjoy yours while you have them! emoticon

Today was the second group run in my training group. What beautiful weather - finally! Just like my Austin HM. I met a woman who moved here from San Antonio about a year ago. She actually drives over an hour each way to cone to this group, because she trained with them in San Antonio (and obviously liked it).

She's about my speed & was really grateful to find someone to run with. She's a bit slower & takes a lot more walking breaks - because she has asthma; she doesn't do Galloway. She won't be here the next couple of weeks. At least today I got to run with someone today!

The turkey was wandering aroundthe neighborhood when I left (if you missed it on my feed, a huge turkey has been wandering in our backyard on & off for a few days). I think it's a Tom; 2 yrs ago a mother turkey & babies appeared in our backyard - once; last yr, no sightings).

DH built a little kind of dropped ceiling outside under our deck. He hoped it would help keep moisture away from the door when it rains. It doesn't really work as he'd hoped; but we have a robin nesting on it at the moment, which bothers him, but I think is very sweet.

Getting stuff together to take down to my folks tomorrow.

    Yay for having somebody to run with :-)
Once at one of the apartments I lived in, I saw a peacock in the parking lot. In a different one, I saw a baby opossum. It's odd the wildlife than comes to visit sometimes.
I think it's nice that you've got a robin.
Have fun with the folks. We're heading over to the in-laws tomorrow.

    Nice that you have someone in your group now that is a good match for your speed. I like seeing the little baby birds. Hopefully you'll have little robin babies to enjoy soon. On our walk today, I see that many of the geese have little yellow fluffballs swimming after them. So cute.

Good snack ideas

This month's Fitness magazine had some snack ideas that appealed to me:

4 potstickers
I LOVE potstickers! What a fabulous idea

1 cup red bell pepper slices topped with 1/2 cup retried black beans & 1 tbsp guacamole

1/2 cup greek yogurt mixed with 2 tsp honey & 1 tsp cocoa, topped with 1/2 c raspberries
I'd probably sub blueberries or strawberries; not overly fond of raspberries

What's your fav snack? Popcorn is one of my favorites.

    I'm there with you on the popcorn as I love crunchy, salty stuff. I'm not a big fan of raspberries either although I can eat them. Love the Greek yogurt and berries (strawberries or blueberries) as well. Hummus is always great with baby carrots, etc.

I gained weight & it doesn't bother me

Because it was only .2 lb & the heavier dress I wore alone could account for that! I ate out 2 times - 3 if you count the leftovers - starting exercising more again & it's about a week from TOM.

I would really, really, really like a small loss next week, but I know it's going to be tough. TOM. Going down to the folks for mother's day.

I feel so much better now that my energy is returning. I started in on an exercise I saw last week - a ladder with a slight twist - you do 2 exercises the first day. Then those 2 the next, plus a new exercise. And so on. Since it's mostly bodyweight exercises, it seemed like a good way to ease back into ST.

This morning I made some mini cheesecakes to take with me Sunday. I bought strawberries today, because there's a strawberry sauce for the cheesecakes & I'll dip a bunch in dark chocolate, too - the strawberries, that is, not the cheesecakes altho I bet that would taste awesome . . .

I scored a pair of bright turquoise skinny jeans at TJMaxx yesterday . . . the legs fit great but my stomach is too big, causing me to have to keep hitching them up because my stomach pushes them down. I figure I have a month to work on that; obviously the abs haven't been worked in a long time, which is part of the problem - that plus I probably need to lose just a few pounds for them to fit. I would've tried the next size up, but they didn't have any in that size.

I know, I know - I should've stayed strong; what can I say - I can be weak when it comes to clothes. But then you already knew that!

    All those things could account for more than a 0.2 lb gain... you probably do have a loss.

I might even eat cheesecake if it was dipped in dark chocolate...well...probably not.

. . . but it probably speaks to why I have a weight problem.

The other day when I was out grocery shiopping I saw signs for frozen yogurt; I never got a closeup look at them, tho. I figured that maybe the seasonal ice cream stand down the road was now serving frozen yogurt.

So imagine my excitement when DH informed me a TCBY had opened up within walking/running distance from our house. It's only 1 1/4 mile away - but somehow now I'm excited by running to it for a treat occasionally. There's a carvel in the same strip mall I've never set foot in, and as I said, a seasonal ice cream stand a bit further down we walk to once in a blue moon.

There used to be a TCBY about 3 miles from my house in Austin I'd walk to on occasion (pre-running days). So there's some nostalgia there, too, both good & bad: there had been several young girls murdered at a different location in austin that was big news.

So there you have it - just waiting for the next warm running day! The weather hasn't really quite gotten the memo that it's spring yet, tho. Much less approaching summer.

Yesterday the president visited my husband's workplace. We watched it on tv at home. There was a lottery for tickets & DH didn't win. It was pouring much of the day; he said they were closing half the parking & there would be cell phone & Internet outages. Luckily he can work from home occasionally.

It also allowed me to get out early, since they were closing some major roads due to the president's visit & I needed to go to kohls. I returned something, but managed to walk out with 3 tops & a pair of shoes . . . "my" room is beginning to look like a shoe store!

    Running distance is good, though. At least you can burn off some of the calories.

    YEAH for a yogurt shop within running distance. Isn't it funny how we now think of things to do in "running distance", lol.

Yeah for new shoes, did you get some spikey JLO one's from kohl's? You and I are definitely shoe addicts. A girl can never have too many shoes. I keep telling my hubby that I am going to turn our spare bedroom into a dressing room for me, complete with a shoe shrine.
