The cold diet

Thursday, April 19, 2012

Yes, she's back. Yes, I had a very good loss this week - for me - but that will happen when you lose your appetite for about 4 days. Or maybe I should call it the Passover diet, because I was eating matzo brei & matzo ball soup for about 3 days straight.

Unfortunately, my appetite is back; of course it had to return at sone point. We'll see how much of that weight loss I can hold onto, especially with TOM around the corner.

In fact, yesterday I had an ultra-rich brownie. I ate the whole thing, too. I was going to leave a few bites . . . even tried to . . . but didn't. This brownie has been sitting in the freezer for about half a year, meant to be a reward for a long run. I counted it as 1 1/2 brownies because the thing was huge.

Even so I ate way less for the week than I normally do.

I'm a bit puzzled by this cold, as I actually feel my life has been fairly balanced lately. No more staying up nights with Chester, no HM training . . . well, it was my first cold in 2 yrs so I can't really complain. Still not quite over it.

But I feel very fluffy because there's been sooo little exercise the last couple of weeks. Going to try to ease back into it, not overdo it . . . I've just started walking the dogs again.

I tried another recipe from the SP vegan cookbook . . . tofu fingers . . . very easy, but very bland - definitely needs something. So far I'm not real impressed but there are a few more I'd lime to try. Still not a lot of energy for cooking . . . the flesh just ain't real willing right now.

Wonder if your taste will improve your impression of the recipes when you're back to "normal" With the regular spark cookbook, I found myself using the recipes as a springboard...believe I only made one or two of them without doing my own tweaks...well, that's what cooking is to me and I know it is to you too...anyone who reads cookbooks for fun has to be a lot more adventurous than to just follow recipes as is!

One of the Drs I worked with would NEVER get sick except when he went on vacation...our theory was that the simple act of relaxing and not being under the typical stress was enough to let his immunity down. I thought of that as I read about your getting sick now when you aren't training etc. Anyway, you had that good old remedy....matzo ball soup sounds like good medicine!

I think we get so SPOILED by being healthy & well that when a bug comes along to pester us, at least for myself it can be such a nuisance to deal with!!

I don't get sick very often but when I do, it's usually when I am relaxed...like on vacation.
Oooohhhh...brownie....
.yum :-)
You could be a little fluffy due to imminent TOM.

Some days we feel more fluffy than others. And, yes, no scale for me for another week. The only reason I weighed in two days in
a row was because of new scale and also
feeling lighter than the scale said that I gained
a pound. I had my first cold in a few years
a couple of months ago and it was an un-
welcome guest as well. Seems like you've
beaten it though. Have a good day.

Learning patience

Friday, April 13, 2012

Patience can come in real handy when you can't break a plateau, & sometimes you learn it from odd places. I play a game on my kindle called thread words there are 10 levels of the game, with each higher level getting more difficult (maybe this should've been an weight loss is like blog, because it gets harder as you get closer!).

When I started to play it, I'd get to level 6 or 7 & then just start a new game at level 1, because I didn't want to work that hard. Then one day I just stuck it out . . . and completed level 10 (ok, it probably took more than a week).

And I've continued to do that. You can choose to have the game show you theremaiing words & move onto the next level, but recently I took my time - probably a week or more - and just kept revisiting it. And was so pleased when the final words finally came to me. I think you can draw the weight loss analogies here.

Now a mini rant: a few days ago I noticed Chester trying to get into an envelope by my husbsnd's desk. Looked at it & it contained wrappers from KIND bars, so I picked it up off the floor & put it on his desk. When he asked why it was there, I told him.

Guess what I came home to yesterday? He'd left it on the floor again. You can connect the dots. This isn't the first, or third, or probably even the sixth time he's put the dogs at risk because he was too lazy to make sure something tempting was out of their reach. To say I was not happy is putting it mildly. Of course I couldn't leave the mess for him to clean up, either!

And to end, I was actually feeling better yesterday, not so wiped out, then woke up this morning at 3 am with a scratchy throat & feel 10 times worse. So lots & lots of tea today . . .

Sometimes you just have to knock them over the head! ha! My husband leaves the cover of the garbage can up and I am always reminding him that Lou could easily stick her head in and grab something and get sick.

Speaking of sick, I am so sorry that you are not feeling well.

Sorry to hear about your throat...yep, sounds like lots of tea & water is in order!

Patience...sometimes seems so DARNED TOUGH to have enough of it though!

Why habits are a bad thing

Thursday, April 12, 2012

Maybe you saw this coming; maybe you didn't. But yup, habits can be used for good or evil.

Maybe you eat, out of habit, at certain times - whether or not you're truly hungry.

Maybe you reward yourself with food - a very hard habit to break.

Maybe you eat the same foods all the time out of habit - limiting the vitamins & minerals you get.

Maybe you never measure your food portions - because ignorance is bliss (altho tight jeans aren't).

Maybe you do the same sort of exercise all the time.

Maybe you're still wearing you're fat clothes - because they're comfortable.

Maybe it's time to change up those habits & build a few new ones!

;) I totally do the same exercise a lot. But man, how else can I get in 50+ miles of running a week? Let me tell ya, cross training is like pulling teeth with me. I can make myself do the bike ride to work but doing 15 min of ST is like asking me to saw off my legs. I'm so tired from running 8-10 hrs a week that I'm like "screw it, I'm done today". Haha.

And I get in food ruts because I'm lazy.
At least it's usually something like giant salads with tofu for lunch and then heaps of roasted veggies and Gardein for dinner. And cookies. Many cookies. Dang you marathon/ultramarathon hungries! I'm useless in the face of you! (fistshake)

Why habits are a good thing

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

They put you on autopilot. I sweep the stairs 3 x week. Today was my day. Despite being woken up at 4, ultimately I overslept. I decided I could skip the stairs today.

The laundry room, where the litterboxes are, get swept daily. So when I picked up the broom, I just automatically headed up the stairs, so I swept them anyway.

I'm sure you can see how that applies to a healthy lifestyle.

I got about 90% of what I wanted to get done done yesterday, but it really tired me out. I did get to relax a few hrs in the afternoon & did feel better for it. The house does look good . . . definitely not perfect, but good . . . makes me want to have someone over so it doesn't go to waste!

You can see the top of our triple dresser again. I fold my laundry in the laundry room, but it usually ends up sitting on top of the dresser instead of getting put away. I'm really going to make an effort to keep it clear this week.

Today will be a relaxing day. Walk the dogs, some light cardio . . . and probably some catching up with tv shows. I really did enjoy my YBB (yoga booty ballet) yesterday . . . it's a light workout, but I love how they combine the workout with some spirituality. So I'll probably do some more today.

Nothing like a bit of tidying to make yourself feel great, is there? I'm guilty of putting stuff on top of the dresser as well.

I had to clean my house today. I'm renovating it, so it's going to be messy, but there's a threshold beyond which, "I just can't take it anymore!"

I wish it were more of a habit for me to clean, like a routine, but I am too random for that. Good job on keeping up with it!

At least half the fridge is clean

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Still feeling eh, but I tackled the bottom half of the fridge. Just that takes half an hour! Either I'm getting better at using up my freggies, throwing them out before they liquify, or cleaning, cause it actually wasn't in bad shape. Or maybe a combination of all of the above.

I also think the large deli drawer on the bottom, where I defrost things, helps too. Even if at least half of it is usually filled with veggies. One veggie drawer just doesn't cut it for me.

I want to squeeze in some light cardio since yesterday was my second rest day of the week & I don't feel that bad - just not that good. Dogs need to be walked. Ideally the whole house should be vacuumed, but it may just be the upstairs. Couches definitely need to be defurred! And I need to shower a bit earlier than usual so it can dry before we go out - I am really a frizz ball if I blow dry so I really try to avoid it even in the winter.

And what I really want to do us just veg out on the couch . . . oh well, I'm thankful my brother's visit got me to tackle some of the chores I hate doing - that really needed to be done.

    Hey, frizzball!

I thought I was the only one out there who still airdries their hair because it seems to behave that way. The hair people will tell you to load your hair up with product and then blowdry but I always say "why bother".

Nothing like a visitor to make you tidy up, is there. We have company coming tonight and I will be home this afternoon de-furring out house!
