Race report: Runnin of Green Island

Saturday, March 17, 2012

I don't know why I like this race so much. Maybe because for the second time in a row, it's my fastet race. It's really not scenic at all, except for a little bit at the end. Of course the fact that there's a bathroom at tbe start doesn't hurt!

I know more people in the running group now, but they know each other really well & I'm still kind of an outsider. But I did get to chat with a few women beforehand. My plan to draft off my running buddy backfired because she hung back with a slower friend & finished after me.

The first mile was really fast again, but not quite as fast as last year. Haven't downloaded the info from my watch yet, but it was a 10 mm (last year was just below a 10 mm). I can only sustain that for about 1 mile tho.

I purposely slowed down on mile 2. Walked thru the water station - my only walking - & sucked down most of the cup without getting it all over myself (if you've never raced, folks, it's really an art). I don't carry water with me for this short a race (4 miles).

By mile 3 I had to slow down. Would I do better starting slower? I guess we're not going to know. I was passed by the obligatory old geezer at about mile 2 1/2. At mile 3 I picked up the pace to about 10:30 mm, but with half a mile to go I had slowed down to 11:30.

I passed a few people early on in mile 3, but they passed me later. Had old geezer in my sights but never managed to pass him. Just didn't have enough left in the tank to pick it up. If I could've maintained that 10:30 for that whole last mile . . . oh well, it was another really nice day to run. Cloudy & in the mid-40s by the start time of 10 am.

Last yr my time was 43:20; my watch said 44:05 this yr. I always have dreams & goals to have a better time . . . it happens once in a while, but not too often.

I can be petty, tho. I was mad that someone I knew, who has always been slower than me, beat me on my new year's day run. I was vindicated today when I beat her & she was with her speedster son who ran Boston last yr (he does like 7 mm). told you I can be petty!

I'm with you - I have two ladies I'm in contention with though at 65 and 71 they are still kicking my rear end! We all take it in good humor though.

You stayed near your old time and I always consider that a win for me - I didn't get worse! Great job on your race.

haha to the bathroom at the start - us runners don't ask for much.

Its obviously common to start off too fast because of the adrenaline of everyone else. I know I have a hard time sticking to my run/walk intervals in the beginning of races because it seems to early to walk. I guess it is just a matter of preference if you want negative splits or not. It doesn't sound like it hurt you too bad to start out with the 10 mm.

Congrats on a successful race!

emoticonon the race, you totally inspire me, just wish my body could keep up with my spirit, but I'm working on it.

I had to laugh when you said "passed the geezer" emoticon.

Can't is a dirty word

Friday, March 16, 2012

There is no can't. There are only excuses. And yup, I have sure used them over the years.

I can't run, because I have to walk the dogs first & it all takes too much time. You know what? You make time for the things you want to do. Going on the third HM now . . .

I can't do ST on the days I run; it takes too much time (do we see a theme?). Yesterday I walked the dogs, went to my meeting, picked up a few groceries, did 25 minutes of intense ST, took Chester to the vet, ran an hr on the treadmill & cooked dinner inside because it was raining this first day we'd planned to grill. Ok, so the house is kind of messy . . . something had to give.

I really want to get more ST in now that I have several months before I have to start training for my next HM.

I guess this all begs the question just what am not doing eating-wise to move me toward my GW? Too much sweets, not enough freggies no doubt. Maybe too many carbs. I need to look back & see how I was eating when I was being more successful. Despite a much better week of eating, no ebooks this week either & that pisses me off.

Something needs to change; there is no can't.

In my vocabulary, Can't usually means I don't wanna .... how's that for honesty?!

I would vote to add the word "but" to the dirty word list. You make a great point though. My ex says can't= certainly am not trying.

Transitioning is hard

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

We are in that transitional winter to spring phase right now. The mornings are still pretty cool, so you might need a sweater, but it can get quite warm during the day. And the temps swing quite a bit from one day to the next. Knowing what to wear to keep you comfortable is difficult.

Just as I am trying to transition from maintaining my weight to losing those last 10 lbs. It's hard in many of the same ways. Knowing what to eat that will allow me to lose those last few pounds - and maintain that loss - comfortably - is difficult.

I guess it's a short one today, because I don't really have insights on how to do it!

Yes, the last 10 pounds - I remember them well. I think consistency is what helped me ultimately. It took the better part of 6 months but I made it.

I can tell you from experience these last 10 pounds are the hardest. It was the most challenging time of my whole journey, your patience and perserverance are being tested to the max. Just keep doing what you are doing and it will eventually come off, don't stress about it. I know it's hard when you are so close to your goal, but it took me six months to finally get rid of 10 pounds. You will get there, just shift your focus to your running, it will keep your mind off the scale. You can do it, just remember....PATIENCE. emoticon

And let's throw the time change in on top of those other factors...! Although I've been taking greater care to guard my sleep I'm still feeling more sluggish than I oughta since we've "sprung back."

They say that losing the last bit of weight and the maintenance is a lot harder than most people imagine. I have yet to experience either emoticon all the same so I am not much help to you.

You would not be impressed by our weather today. It is -12 (celcius) with a windchill of -22! The sun is out all the same so it will be a good day for walking the dogs once I get home from work and put on a few extra layers of clothes!

I really appreciated all of your answers to my questions by the way!

Reigning in portions

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

I have, over the years, learned what some of my problem areas are. Knowledge may be power, but not if you don't DO something about it.

I love healthy foods, but most meals (even breakfast) just don't seem complete without a sweet. I have a coup,e of small chocolates after lunch, disguised as my multivitamin & calcium chocolate. Lately they just haven't seemed like enough (portion control is another problem area).

Today I decided I would add a cookie. ONE cookie only. One very SMALL cookie. I like lucy's gluten free cookies. And so I had one cookie with my tea after my lunch. A serving is actually 3 cookies for something like just over 100 calories, so that should give you some idea of their size.

I am always struggling to find a sweet that doesn't break the bank but satisfies me at the same time. I'll let you know how it goes!

We've decided on the Montreal HM. Of course I actually have to get off my butt & sign up . . . and hope DH doesn't have a last minute meeting that prevents him from attending. Part of why I chose it was because we wanted to take a vacation there. We've both been there several times, but not in about 20 years.

And yes, travel to Canada requires a passport, but we both have one. I suppose I should check the expiration date on mine . . .

Yay for deciding on Montreal! I have only been there once and it was more of a quick stop so we didn't get to see historic Montreal which they say is amazing.

I hope your passport isn't expired. Do you mind telling me how much a U.S. passport costs these days? A Canadian one is around $100 (I think) as I have applications home but just not filled out. Not that I am going anywhere but my only sibling lives in Australia and it would be nice to have in case of an emergency. Of course, it would also be nice to visit him but that is out of the question right now until my husband gets back in the workforce!

I admire your portion control! I just can't stop at one cookie therefore I don't bring them into the house!

Congrats on signing up for another half. I have been craving sweets too lately, two dark choc hershey kisses usually do the trick for me, unless someone is being evil and has made or brought home brownies. emoticon

I have the same problem finding a sweet that isn't too evil that does satisfy.
Good luck!! Let me know how it works out.
Yay for Montreal. Sounds like it will be nice. Yes, do check your passport because it could take a while to get a new one.

So many HMs, so little time!

Monday, March 12, 2012

I am torn. I've ben leaning torwards the inaugural RnR Montreal HM for a while. I found out this weekend that a running buddy is already signed up for it. But she's from Montreal, has friends & family there, so I'm realistic about how much time we might spend together.

Then there's the wineglass HM, which another running buddy is doing. The 2 are a week apart so I won't be doing them both. The wineglass HM might work better with DH's schedule . . . but you really never know. It would move me closer to the 50 HMs in 50 states goal . . . something I might never actually achieve but it's a fun goal to work towards & dream about.

I like the buddy doing the Montreal HM better, even tho we just barely know each other. Gotta decide soon since I have $10 off Montreal expiring in just a few days. Decisions, decisions.

Had a really, really lovely weekend. Starting with sat's run which was, indeed, FRUN if a bit cold. Sat night we went out for sushi with my running buddy who's doing Montreal, so got to know her better & met her boyfriend. She invited us - man, it's been a long time since someone invited me first!

Altho I suppose technically one of my buddies asking if I was going to do the pancake run yesterday could be viewed as an invitation . . . but I didn't. But we did pack up the dogs & headed up to saratoga where I stocked up on flavored olive oils, salsas & dog treats. Such beautiful weather & the dogs enjoyed hunting for treats on the sidewalks (and growling at other dogs in lola's case).

The good weather is supposed to hold out thru much of the week, I can finally open windows again & we're even planning to grill one night this week!

The events are sure piling up out there, eh...? Same with cycling too. Tight budget makes it necessary to stick with my own & club cycling plans for the most part.
