Weight: one of life's BIG mysteries

There are many of life's little mysteries: why it so often snows on trash pickup day, or why there is a wet dog smell but no wet cat smell, for instance.

Weight, OTOH, is definitely one of life's BIG mysteries, and why I almost titled this blog what a difference 2 pounds make. I can actually SEE the difference in my face when I weigh 140 vs 138. My 140 face makes me unhappy; my 138 face makes me feel happy - it is less jowly and more angular.

DH & I were recently talking about one of my favorite quotes from "White men can't jump" , which goes something like "sometimes when you lose, you really win, and sometimes when you win, you really lose."

Well, sometimes when I lose, I feel as though I've gained, and sometimes when I've gaied, I feel as though I've lost - and sometimes I really know that I've lost. I'm typing this sitting in my focus jeans, and while a little tight, they almost fit. I am unsure of how I've done this week I'm hopeful that maybe I lost a little - altho that would be unusual after a week with a big loss, not to mention TOM is getting close and it wouldn't surprise me to have a gain.

What does it all mean? Why, absolutely nothing, of course. Cause it's not about a number, it's about how we choose to fuelmorselves. Maybe someday I'll even accept that.

    Ohhh so true about weight being one of life's great mysteries! One mystery I like is being able to wear smaller clothes at a higher weight with strength training, though. Not that I'm there right now but I remember it well and am heading that way again. emoticon

    LOL! Today is trash day and we got a half inch of ice last night. Schools are closed.
You want to know something silly too, when I eat a lot of simple carbs at one sitting, be it cake or chips, I can feel it in my face within minutes, as if it's getting bloated. Just had to share that :)

    It's all about becoming more self-aware...after being so CLUELESS all my life I'm learning to become comfortable in my own skin and to notice those little, but NOT so little things such as the fit of clothes, the improved definition in my face or arms. Big stuff!

I agree though with the whole weirdness of the weight thing.
You are doing so great with the focus jeans and fitting into them and all. That is really great. And your weight - you are skinny girl. Good for you.

    I am avoiding the emoticon at all costs this week. I just feel fat & bloated, I'm sure it's all in my head, but I can't bring myself to step on it and see a gain, so avoidance is my coping mechanism this week. I'm staying FAR, FAR, AWAY !!!! until I have a day when I'm feeling skinny.

Argh! My iPad ate the beginning of this post. Not cool!

So anyway, DH found a link where you can get 5 free iTunes singles for free if you use your American Express card - https://search.americanexpress.com/a

I wanted upbeat songs I could run or workout to. I did know right away that I wanted Enrique Iglesias' "I like it", but then I was at a loss. I'd recently clipped a magazine article about 100 best workout tunes. I got "How far we've come" from Matchbox 20 from that.

Do you know how hard it can be to choose 5 SINGLES?

Some surfing landed me on nomeatathlete.com , which is a really cool site about running & vegetarianism.

And here is the other 3 songs:

"Time of you life", Green Day
"I gotta feeling", The Black Eyed Peas

Choosing an album would've been easy. But 5 random songs? Not so much.

    I like telephone (pink), I like some of Katy Perry songs to run to, I love the black eye peas. But.. I've taken to finding some of the upbeat tunes from the 80's & early 90's. I've pulled out some of my old souxie and the banshee's disks, and loaded up those, as well as the clash, and some of the variety disks I got in Canada.... Anything with a good, steady beat is good for me!

    If I had to narrow it down to five songs, I would definitely include my latest go to song: "The Dog Days Are Over" Florence and the Machines. Whenever I hear that song, I will dance, dance, dance~ in the car, in the hall, the living room, at work. And it's a big dance. I think it would be a great running song. emoticon

    Well..........I find I love the old songs that transport me back to my teens....argh....I am an old fart! I was listening to some salsa on a run....do love latin music...and I ran into a bit of a problem...I tend to start to do a running samba which is weird to say the least and not the best running technique to say the most!! LOL

    My iPhone has a subset of my itunes library. I am using the C25K app again, so I'm using the phone instead of the iPod. It's got a lot of AC/DC, Rob Zombie, disco stuff and some Neil Diamond. Yes, kind of a weird mix.
I couldn't get to the Amex link so I couldn't see what was available.
I don't think I've ever just downloaded a single song from iTunes. It's always been albums.

    Hmmm - I am at a loss when asked on the spot which songs I would choose because I can't think of any for the life of me. LOL. So that is a dilema I think we would share.
Glad you came to a decision on some though and I might add good choices. I love a variety of music so those were good choices.
So you woke up to a winter wonderland huh? Man when will it ever end. We finally had some good weather here and a lot of our snow melted but I hear it is snowing outside right now so that may not last long.

    Oh man....you KNOW you're officially an old fart when you do a search for the best workout music and take the time to go to SIX different lists and can't find a SINGLE TUNE which is on your 8 GB mp3 player with over 1300 tunes...! lol

    That's very hard because I love so many different songs and groups. If it was upbeat songs that made me want to move that I was looking for I think I would choose:

Pump It - Black Eyed Peas
Prince - Let's Go Crazy
Parasite - Kiss
Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith
Holiday - Green Day

Some Led Zeppelin, Pink, etc. songs would be great as well.

Bandaids DO weigh a pound & other wacky tales

Thanks for the congrats on losing weight, but

a) it was only 1.6 lbs - which of course is still very good and

b) it's most of the 1.8 lbs I'd gained in the last couple of weeks

Not that I'm not happy; of course I am. Wish I could say I did something different this past week, but other than going out for sushi twice - and eating more sweets than normal (but not binging or out of control), I didn't.

And while I'd love to think that more sweets & sushi are the answer, I know they're not.

Not moving my tracker when I gained weight doesn't seem to make any more difference than moving it every week. No answers here!

I made my guacamole & refried bean quesadilla the other day - it was really good, but I don't recommend putting the sour cream on the inside while you grill it up - it just oozes everywhere & makes a big mess. Top it with it afterwards - or leave it out altogether!

These quesadillas don't have any cheese, mainly cause I try to limit my cheese consumption. And they're still really good! Of course they'd be even tastier with cheese, but did you know that cheese can actually be addictive? Casein has morphine-like properties.

But here's a great veggie sandwich with cheese - I decided to make my own rather than buy my favorite veggie sandwich when I went to the co-op:

2 slices bread
1 wedge laughing cow cheese
2 tsp vegenaise or mayo
Red onion
Zucchini slices
Cheddar cheese

Spread bread with laughing cow & mayo

Pile on the veggies (bell peppers, mushrooms, carrots work well too). Top with cheese. Toast til cheese is melted.

My only problem was that the sandwich fell apart & was difficult to eat - but oh so yummy. I ate half with some baby carrots & an apple for a snack, and the other half for lunch & that worked quite well.

Yesterday's run, which was in the 40s, felt so good. No 3 layers on top! No long johns! I wasn't even planning to run, it was supposed to be a ST day, but it was once again too nice not to run. Today I need to squeeze in ST & Zumba, and of course walking the dogs, too. It's going to go back to the 30s this weekend, but that's ok. Before I know it, I'll be doing pre-breakfast runs again.

In fact yesterday was so warm, I didn't even think about hot cocoa - I use it as my post-run snack. I only have it after I run, which is great incentive to run in the winter!

Sorry I was all over the place but just wanted to throw some stuff out there. What gets you moving thru the winter? Any cool new meals you've tried recently?

    I LOVE veggie sandwiches and it's so hard for me to find a restarunt that make a good one, seriously I think everyone I've found has either been while on a trip far away or has gone out of business grrr! I'd never thought of using the laughing cow cheese on one, GREAT idea!

    Yes, it would be nice to think that more sweets and sushi are the answer but we both know that they're not. At least they didn't cause a gain.
You know my opinion of guacamole so I won't be making the quesadillas.
The veggie sandwich does sound really good, though. I think the best tasting sandwiches usually are the ones that fall apart. Something about the components of a really tasty sandwich makes them not stay together very well.

    It was a gorgeous day for a run! I was tempted to go in shorts (and would have if I'd run later in the day), but ended up in nylon pants. I'm heading out again today (3rd day in a row) just because I can and I won't be able to for the next 3 days.

You're quesedilla sounds really yummy! Have you ever considered swapping in plain Greek yogurt for the sour cream? I bet you'd never know the difference-even my hubby (who is rather picky) will do that. I don't even buy sour cream anymore. What kind of tortillas do you use? That's my only concern-they all seem to have so many calories for what you get.

Songs & recipes

Previously my fave running song was "According to you" by orinthia - I would have never heard of that song if it weren't for Dancing with the Stars, of all things. Currently it's "Firework" by Katie Perry. Both strong women with strong messages. What's your fave workout or running song?

Also wanted to share a couple of recipes I'm enjoying lately.

Protein fudge bars

4 scoops chocolate protein powder
1 cup oatmeal
1/3 cup almond butter
1/2 cup almond milk
3 tbsp honey

Mix everything together, put in pan, & refrigerate. Makes 6 bars.

I warmed mine up on the lowest setting in my toaster oven. I think you can probably get away with less honey. It's on the high side for calories - about 250 - but I think if you're doing a hard workout it's fine.

Hummus quesadillas

1 Ezekiel tortilla
2 tbsp super hummus (or regular hummus)
Red onion
2 tsp olive oil

Spread the hummus on the tortilla. Top with rest of the ingredients (except oil). Fold in half.

Heat 1 tsp oil in frying pan, put in quesadilla, fry about 3 minutes. Turn over, put in the rest of the oil, and fry about 3 minutes.

Cut into 4 triangles & enjoy.

Today I think I'm going to try something similar with a little refried beans, quac, & vegan sour cream.

Those two recipes sounds awesome and am definitely going to try them - especially since that is part of my goals - trying new recipes.

    Oh you have made me salivate over the fudge bar recipe, I have been looking for something sweet but not wanting sugar or a whole lot of processed stuff. I am going to make them on Friday, since I have all those ingredients on hand and I am off from work on Friday, with plenty of time to do things I love, like kitchen experiments and some quiet time yoga or an extra long run. I love orinthia, I saw her in concert last year with Adam Lambert, she is an amazing guitar player. I also saw her in the Michael Jackson movie "This is it", she's phenominal) and I love Katie Perry too, especially Teenage Dream - nothing like some good tunes to get the heart pumping and the mood lifted. Seriously?! Just who have I become? Do you ever wonder that?

While the weather seriously deteriorated in the evening, as predicted, the morning was glorious: warm & sunny. I'd planned a rest day, but after walking the dogs I knew I had to get out for a run.

I wish I could say it was amazing, but my legs felt full of lead. Still, it felt REALLY amazing to be able to run with just a short sleeve'd tee & a running jacket on - which I had to unzip by the end of the run.

We hit a high of 53 yesterday! Of course right now it's a balmy 12, but it's supposed to get back into the 40s soon. And then back to the 30s. I'm grateful to at least been given a glimpse of spring!

We went out for sushi last night, and the little mom-and-pop place gave you 2 chocolate dipped strawberries for dessert, which was a very nice touch. Then we shared my vegan goodies at home. A nice end to a mostly relaxing day.

Hope y'all had a nice day yesterday with no food hangover. Are you ever surprised by who you've become? Do you have a vision for who you WANT to become?

    The thing I'm most surprised about is how long I was willing to put my own happiness on the back burner. Letting yourself go really isn't worth sacrificing your health for. Moving my body makes me happy, whether it be running, yoga, or Tae-Bo.

It was 68 here yesterday, but with the wind blowing up to 40 MPH, it wasn't ideal to run in. Those Spring temps are coming and I can't wait to run in just shorts and a tank top. Freedom!!!

    We made it to the mid 40's pretty early yesterday. It was perfect for a run (except for the wind). And, yes, I wonder nearly everyday about who I am now and what I will be as I move through this life.

It was a very nice day here yesterday too. We hit 42 and it's supposed to get a little warmer by Thursday. I am so anxious for spring to get here - it's been a long hard winter huh?
